Group Therapy Activities For Adults

Group activities are not just for kids. Group therapy activities for adults can be just as useful and even fun. There are many ways to make each session interactive, and each one can provide tools to help you with your recovery process:

  • Letter Writing: This letter is usually written for the person writing it. You can be creative with who it is from and for your past, present, or future self. This is a great way to think about how other people perceive you and write something positive about yourself. You can share a line, quote, or paragraph with the group for inspiration.
  • Emotions as Objects: This group therapy game requires you to think of different emotions and how they make you feel. On a piece of paper, draw an object or place that makes you think of each emotion. An example could be comparing happiness to the sun or anger to fire. The group can then compare and contrast how different objects make them feel.
  • Motivation Board: Use a poster board or a piece of paper, draw pictures, or write words or quotes inspiring you. Each person can add things that motivate them, things that make them happy, and goals they want to achieve. This is a good way to encourage each other to work towards their goals.
  • Two Truths and a Lie: This is an easy way to help the group learn about and connect. Each person thinks of two truths, and one lie about themselves, and the others have to figure out which is the lie.

    Reflecting on ones highs and lows in life is a common practice in group therapy. On a large piece of paper, group members plot out these points and connect them with a line.     Activities for relapse prevention: Relapse is when an individual, in the process of recovery, starts using the substance again. Relapse prevention activities aim at identifying and anticipating situations where there are chances of engaging in the abusive behaviour and ways to cope with the urges.

    Activities for gaining insight: These kinds of activities help the individual get in touch with their inner self. They help in identifying and becoming aware of the emotional conflict that leads to the abusive behaviour. The group here acts like a mirror for the individual. Example, when sharing substance use history, other members can give feedback or inquire about something. These feedbacks and inquiries help the individual get to know themselves better.

    Activities for maintaining sobriety: These activities help the individual stay in the recovery process and avoid temptation for the substance. They may include activities the individual can engage in to keep themselves busy when they get cravings or activities that help them reason out why they should not engage in it.

    Research reveals that creative writing is beneficial for recovery and healing, for promoting overall well-being, for reducing stress, and for expressing thoughts and feelings about significant life challenges, trauma, and mental health issues.

    Focus on what you hope to gain from staying clean. Visualize the life you want, write it down, and keep it close. It will help remind you of why you are choosing to abstain from drugs while at the same time rewire your brain from an anxious state to a more grounded and peaceful serenity.

    Some of the ways that creative writing has helped people in recovery include:

    Music is widely used to enhance well-being, reduce stress, and distract patients from unpleasant symptoms. Although there are wide variations in individual preferences, music appears to exert direct physiologic effects through the autonomic nervous system.

  • Practice meditation. Meditation is a positive coping strategy when faced with stressful situations.
  • Write whatever comes into your head and dont think about the content. Everyone reads their writing out afterwards.
  • Identify and discuss triggers. What are your triggers and how can you begin to master them?
  • Discuss gratitude. What are you grateful for and what is gratitude?
  • List the best and worst moments of your life.
  • List bad habits. Discuss how you can replace them with good habits.
  • Talk about the effects of drugs and alcohol.
  • Talk about where you are on your recovery journey.

    According to research, people working through substance use disorders often experience feelings of isolation and shame. Activities in a group therapy setting give participants an opportunity to connect with others who understand what they are going through because they have a shared struggle. Support groups also encourage members to validate each other’s experiences and provide a sense of comfort.

    In addition, some people may not yet be ready to enter into a therapy program. In these instances, support groups can give participants a better idea of what it would be like to share their experiences and struggles with others.

    Acting Out: The Substance Abuse Version

    This role-playing card and discussion game has players acting out certain situations to encourage discussions about drug use. Each card gives the players a scenario for them to act out either alone or with other players. Afterward, there is a discussion question or statement for everyone to discuss. Some of the categories include:

    • Who would you go to for help if
    • Facts about drugs
    • The negative consequences of drug use

    More Group Therapy Activities

  • Practice trusting your fellow group members by having one person wear a blindfold and another person help them to complete a task without the use of vision. Tasks might include walking through an obstacle course, drawing a picture on a blackboard, cleaning up objects off the floor, etc.
  • Write down a list of worries and/or fears, then tie the list to a balloon and release it into the air to symbolically let go of your burdens.
  • Imagine the group is going to a deserted island and can only bring ten items. Decide as a group which ten items to bring.
  • Discuss the meaning of friendship. What makes someone a true friend? What makes someone a fake friend? How much should friends be involved in your recovery process? What would you like your friends to do to help you, and are they doing anything to help you already?
  • Write a list of your gifts, strengths, and talents. Then write a list of problems or issues that concern you, such as world hunger, animal cruelty, homelessness, etc. Draw connections between your strengths and your problems, suggesting ways you can use your personal talents to make the world a better place. Share your lists and ideas with the group.
  • Discuss self-harm. What constitutes self-harm? What are some of the reasons people choose to self-harm? Is substance abuse a form of self-harm? Brainstorm a list of activities to do instead of self-harm, should the temptation arise.
  • Write a letter of love, support, and encouragement from your future self.

    Art Of Manipulation Game

    Another game that can be played in group therapy is the art of manipulation game. Substance abusers are fine-tuned in the art of manipulation and have used it as a tool to be able to continue their drug use. Manipulating money from family and friends and manipulating situations when they are called on about their drug use are things they have become good at. This game will teach the group how they have used manipulation in the past, how it looked to others and how to change it in the future.

    The group is not told the name of the game, just that they will be using sales pitches to sell a hard-to-sell item. The facilitator gives each member of the group a piece of paper with an item listed to do a sales pitch about, such as a house, car, refrigerator and other big ticket items. The catch is these things are either dilapidated or broken, and the individual needs to present a sales pitch, but cannot lie about the item by saying it is in good condition. They can embellish the item all they want, as long as there is truth in what each is saying.
