Bible Verses For Alcohol Addiction

Wine Is A Mocker And Beer A Brawler Whoever Is Led Astray By Them Is Not Wise Proverbs : 1 Niv

What the Bible REALLY Says About Alcohol

Temptation is met with two possible outcomes. You may submit and sin or you may resist and conquer. Submitting to the temptation of wine and other alcoholic beverages is an unwise choice.

This is why Isaiah 5:1 warns about drinking. It states, Woe to those who rise early in the morning to run after their drinks, who stay up late at night till they are inflamed with wine. Certainly, there will be great grief, distress or sorrow for anyone with an impulsive desire to drink strong drinks.

Biblical Approach To Addictions

In Philippians 4:5,

  • Committed: Totally resolve to fight addiction with all sense of seriousness. The quality of one’s decision will determine the level of success or failure. The following points are what you will commit to doing after you have totally resolved in your mind.
  • Thought-killing Conscious: Many areas of addiction emerge from unhealthy thoughts and imagination. If one can flood his or her thoughts with only positive things, the tendency to think negatively will be mitigated greatly. Satan brings negative thoughts to everybody. The difference between those who execute these thoughts and those who don’t is discipline. Those who ignore such thoughts by finding more useful things to indulge in are those who do not allow the thought to germinate in the soil of their minds.
  • Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

  • Distanced From Pointers To Negative Thoughts: If you must succeed in this journey of combating addiction, you must keep off from everything that points to negative thoughts. You must keep off from bad companies, control what you see and mind where you go. This decision may not be convenient, but the results are worth it.

Dont You Know That You Yourselves Are Gods Temple And That Gods Spirit Dwells In Your Midst If Anyone Destroys Gods Temple God Will Destroy That Person For Gods Temple Is Sacred And You Together Are That Temple 1 Corinthians : 16

As children of God, we should live our lives to please God and do His will. God wants us to invite the Holy Spirit in our lives by caring for our bodies.

Alcohol addiction is harmful. It hurts our minds and bodies and in essence destroys them. Verse seventeen of this text tells the consequence of destroying our body temples-God will destroy us.

Is Alcoholism A Sin In The Bible

In the Bible, anything or anyone that is put before God is considered idol worship and a sin. Look at it this way if you desire alcohol to the point where you absolutely have to consume it you are putting your desire above God.

In Exodus 20:3 God warns the children of Israel that they should not worship any other God. If you are controlled by addiction then it is like a god that has power over you.

What Does The Bible Say About Addiction

While addiction and dependency disorders are relatively new ideas, they are inherently linked to the age-old problem of sin, of which the Bible has much to say. Addiction exists because we live in a fallen world where people are wounded through sins influence and enslaved by sins control.

Perhaps the simplest way to understand addiction in light of Scripture is that sin of any kind is addicting. When a sinful behavior takes mastery over our lives, rather than us mastering it, we become enslaved to it, and our sin becomes a stronghold of addiction.

While most addictions start as a coping mechanism for dealing with painful experiences, trauma, stress, abuse, childhood wounds, anxiety, and other hurtful emotions, they inevitably lead to further damage, broken relationships, guilt, shame, isolation, illness, and often death. Fortunately, the Bible contains much wisdom regarding addiction, including where to find help, wholeness, and healing.

Many People Ask Can I Drink A Small Amount Daily

Where do we draw the line when it comes to alcohol assumption? How much is too much? The alcohol that was used in Scripture, was not as strong as what we have today, so we should actually drink less. All things should be done in moderation, but never make up your own definition for moderation. Alcohol tolerance levels vary, but one way to know is if Christ was standing in front of you, would you have a clear conscience drinking a couple of glasses of alcohol a day?

If another believer lived with you, would you have a clear conscience drinking alcohol every day? Would it cause them to stumble? Would it cause you to stumble? What is your body and your mind telling you? Are you getting tipsy and to the point of intoxication? What is your purpose?

Is it really showing self-control when consuming alcohol daily? Can it lead to pouring 2 more cups? These are areas where we have to discipline ourselves in. I am not saying you cant drink, but I dont believe it would be wise to drink every day, nor is it showing self-control.

    19. Philippians 4:5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.

    20. Proverbs 25:28 Like a city with breached walls is a man without self-control.

Bible Verses To Help You Recover From Alcohol Dependence

Lasting freedom from alcohol abuse does not come only from accountability to man, but also to God. Your sponsor cannot follow you everywhere, but the Holy Spirit dwells within you.

Consider the 12 steps to recovery with the Bible in mind:

    1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol that our lives had become unmanageable.

Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has conflicts? Who has complaints? Who has wounds for no reason? Who has red eyes? Those who linger over wine, those who go looking for mixed wine. Dont gaze at wine because it is red, when it gleams in the cup and goes down smoothly. In the end it bites like a snake and stings like a viper. Your eyes will see strange things, and you will say absurd things. Proverbs 23:29-33, ESV

If you can relate to the above verses, then you have a drinking problem. The first step to recovery is to acknowledge the severity of your issue and the consequences that lie ahead if you continue down this path. The Bible does not just condemn alcoholism, it also offers a way out for the people struggling with addiction. Gods strength is made perfect in weakness, so offer Him your burdens in exchange for His which is light.

    2. We came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

    3. We made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God.

    4. We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

    7. We humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

    Help Each Other Learn

Even with the help of a great tool like The Life Recovery Bible, certain parts of the Bible may still seem confusing or even overwhelming. This is why its important to seek fellowship with people who can edify you.

Colossians 3:16 is a powerful reminder of this: Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives.

To do this, you can share things youve learned, discuss concepts or passages you dont understand, and pray together for better understanding and the Lords continued guidance.

Therefore I Urge You Brothers And Sisters In View Of Gods Mercy To Offer Your Bodies As A Living Sacrifice Holy And Pleasing To Godthis Is Your True And Proper Worship Romans 1: 1 Niv

    Pin on PSALM (Chapter 76

Alcohol abuse may lead to many illnesses. The liver, kidney, bladder, and heart are some organs that may become damaged because of alcohol consumption.

Bodies destroyed by addiction are tainted and are not considered as living sacrifices that are holy and acceptable to God. This is why 1 Corinthians 3:17 offers strict guidelines on how to care for the body. It states, If anyone destroys Gods temple, God will destroy that person for Gods temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.

Your body is the temple of God and if you neglect to treat it as such there will be dire consequences not just for your health but for where you will spend eternity.

The Bible speaks about the dangers of alcohol addiction and why drinking wine and other strong drinks should be avoided. It also has a number of texts that provide hope and comfort for anyone who needs help to overcome alcohol addiction.

The Life Of Addiction Is A Life Pulling Away From God

The Bible also accurately describes the addicts situation as he or she becomes controlled by alcoholism. While an addict voluntarily begins using substances to meet a need, they soon become a slave to that substance, continuing to use it even though they dont want to. For what I am doing, I do not understand for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me .

Alcoholism is a daily struggle between what the person knows they should or should not do and what they continue to do. Addiction causes the individual to pull away from God because they put other things above God, they look elsewhere for comfort and help, and they become a slave to that sin.

    When It Leads To Sin

Other scriptures denounce alcohol consumption that offends others or causes them to sin. For instance, Romans 14:21 reads, It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything to cause your brother to stumble.

Similarly, 1 Corinthians 10:31 reminds Christians to exercise self-control and only drink in ways that honor the Holy Spirit: So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

In other words, they should only drink in moderation and never in a manner that hurts themselves, others, or their spiritual journeys.

In Alcoholics Anonymous we speak of the God of our understanding. From the point of view of recovery, the nature of that understanding is irrelevant. The organization, though, arose based on the precepts of a Christian movement called the Oxford Group, and for a large majority of members of 12-step programs, their perception of the nature of God is informed by a Christian background. There are numerous bible verses that can and do apply to drinking and recovering addicts.

Without any disrespect intended to any other faiths or any specific understanding of a Higher Power here are some verses from the Bible that may be of benefit to those suffering from alcohol addiction. Gods word can bring solace to the Christian but can also be valuable to those of a different faith. All quotes are taken from the King James Version of the Bible.

What Does The Bible Say About Drugs

    Chris Elkins, MA 2 sources

The Bible has a lot to say about intoxication, sobriety and intentionally harming the body. But it doesnt directly address the disease of addiction because the word addiction wasnt used when the Bible was written.

Some newer translations of the Bible use the word addicted, but the accuracy of different translations is unknown. This article uses the New International Version of the Bible.

The concepts of addiction and dependence only developed in the 20th century, according to a 2007 article published in the journal Dialogues in Clinical Neuroscience.

Numerous Scriptures can be interpreted to imply that addiction is a sin, but meanings of Scriptures are debatable. In the first book of Corinthians, were warned that temptations can overpower us, but we are given the resources to overcome those temptations.

    1 Corinthians 10:13
No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it

Substance abuse may be one of the temptations that the verse refers to. Alcohol and drug use are relatively common today. Addiction may be considered a temptation. Its difficult for many to bear. But God provides a way out. Rehab and addiction treatment can help individuals overcome the disease, and many people believe spirituality is a key component of recovery.

    Other Scriptures are more direct.
