This was the year 1996. Like Pandoras box, every challenge we took upon introduced us to a new challenge. Unknowingly, HIV/AIDS parents were infecting their children through birth. And unfortunately, many such parents passed away early, leaving behind orphaned children. With little to no help, the Trust once again entered an unchartered territory to once again find new solutions.

Evidence and observation indicate that men and women have distinct challenges on the path to wellness. Both genders face different social pressures that can exacerbate addiction and the effects of trauma are not always identical for both genders. We want all of our patients to feel safe and supported in their treatment center environment, and we know this is usually best accomplished among same-sex peers.
Similarly, we know that men and women of different ages struggle with drug and alcohol addiction and mental health concerns in different ways. Although every person is unique, we often share experiences according to our stage of life, such as college, marriage and parenting, and retirement.
Because age groups and generations have different life experiences, young adults may struggle to identify with a person with grandchildren and older adults may feel that younger people lack wisdom and respect. Peer support can significantly improve a patients chances for recovery.

A substance use disorder is a disease that impacts the brain and behavior. This disorder can lead to an inability to control drug use despite the consequences it may incur. Oftentimes substance abuse disorders begin with experimentation in social settings. Others may develop an addiction through exposure to prescription medications such as opioids and painkillers. Regardless of its origins, long-term excessive use can cause alterations in how the brain functions and regulates emotional balance. She comes to The Freedom Center with over 14 years of direct experience in residential and outpatient treatment between the private and federal sectors.
In addition to helping those suffering from addiction, Vanessa has dedicated part of her career to helping the helper. In 2015, she began working in a Training and Career Development Center coordinating substance abuse trainings for other clinicians. Her experience in behavioral health training, program development, and organizational leadership lead her to pursue a certification as a Project Management Professional in 2018. Vanessa also holds a Bachelors of Arts in Behavioral and Social Sciences from the University of Maryland, College Park and a Masters of Business Administration-Human Resource Management from Columbia Southern University.
Vanessa is a Montgomery County native who spends her free time traveling with her daughter and volunteering in the community.
