Whether public or private, Ohio mental health and/or addiction residential treatment facilities for adults are reviewed and licensed every two years and categorized into three different types:
- Type 1 offers room and board, personal care services, and certified mental health and/or addiction treatment services to adults, children, or adolescents.
- Type 2 offers room and board, personal care, and certified mental health and/or addiction services to a maximum of two adults, children, or adolescents.
- Type 3 offers room and board and certified mental health and/or addiction treatment services to five or more adults.
There are several licensed facilities in Ohio that offer adult residential mental health treatment programs, adult residential addiction treatment programs, or both. These inpatient treatment programs vary in length of stay, from short-term to long-term .

OhioMHAS OAC 5122-14-14 requires that inpatient hospital providers report certain incident data every six months . Mental health providers that are required to report incidents include Type 1 Residential Facilities, Inpatient Psychiatric Service Providers, and Community Mental Health Agencies. Seclusion and restraint rates and lengths from OhioMHAS Regional psychiatric hospitals are included within the dataset. Hospital providers are comprised of psychiatric inpatient units within general hospitals and freestanding psychiatric hospitals in Ohio. OhioMHAS licenses acute inpatient beds on these units for adults, adolescents, and children. Some adult licensed units have programming specific to the geriatric population. This dashboard includes data from all acute inpatient units and/or hospitals that provide programming and treatment for individuals who are experiencing an acute psychiatric crisis and require hospitalization. Private psychiatric hospitals were required to report their service utilization. Patient days, number and minutes of Seclusion, Physical Restraints, Mechanical Restraints, number of patient injuries or illnesses, and number of injuries to staff resulting from Seclusion and Restraint are included.

A native of eastern Ohio, Lori Criss has been engaged in the behavioral health field since 1992. Her experience includes working for the Ohio Commission on Minority Health and Amethyst, Inc. She graduated from SAMHSAs 2010-2011 Women’s Addiction Services Leadership Institute, a year-long nationally-selective, intensive program designed to build leaders for the nations behavioral health field. Lori has most recently served on the Advisory Board to Ohios Criminal Sentencing Commission, the National Council for Behavioral Healths Addiction Policy Committee, and Ohios Housing and Homeless Collaborative.
