How can the 12 step programme help me for food addiction

I used to think that if I just found the right diet, the right sponsor, the right medication, did enough therapy, lost enough weight, that I would stop having problems with food. I didnt want to be a food addict. I lived my life by what I wanted, or didnt want to do what I felt like doing, in the moment. If I think it, then its right.

I would plan to eat abstinently, and then change my mind.

Because I thought all those things, I believed I was right. I would run ideas by myself, and of course my self would agree. I spent endless hours counting calories and planning what I would do when the weight came off. Meanwhile, being fat was depressing, so I told myself it was OK to have just a little, which would invariably lead to a binge.

How Effective Is The 12

Before discussing the efficacy of 12-step programs, its important to remember that efficacy is relative, meaning that how effective something is depends on your goals. If your goal is abstinence from substance abuse, 12-step programs are extremely promising modalities.7

12-step members may use the phrase it works if you work it, meaning that if you invest yourself fully in working a thorough program and completing the 12 steps with your sponsor, the program will be effective for you. However, studies and efficacy rates vary.7

In people who are non-comorbid, meaning that they suffer from a substance use disorder but do not suffer from any other additional mental health condition, 12-step programs prove highly effective in improving the likelihood of long-term abstinence. For those who suffer from substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions, 12-step programs were also found to be extremely effective in one New York city study.7

Other studies mention that many people drop out of 12-step programs 40% in the first year, to be exact.8

Overall, 12-step programs are still one of the most effective and best modalities for fostering long-term abstinence from substance abuse and facilitating the successful transition for people who struggled with substance use disorder into sobriety. They prioritize and work to manifest values of faith, community, abstinence, acceptance, and ongoing self-improvement in their members.

12-step programs are powerful peer support groups that help people recover from substance use disorders, behavioral addictions, and sometimes other co-occurring mental health conditions. 12-step programs also help people achieve and maintain abstinence from substances. Though 12-step programs arent the right tool for everyone, they do tend to help those struggling with substance abuse issues acquire new coping skills, feel the support and acceptance of a loving community, transition into sobriety, and foster long-term recovery from addiction.

What Are The 12 Steps

The 12 Steps, as outlined in the original Big Book and presented by AA are:2

  • Admitting powerlessness over the addiction
  • Believing that a higher power can help
  • Taking a personal inventory
  • Admitting to the higher power, oneself, and another person the wrongs done
  • Being ready to have the higher power correct any shortcomings in ones character
  • Asking the higher power to remove those shortcomings
  • Making a list of wrongs done to others and being willing to make amends for those wrongs
  • Contacting those who have been hurt, unless doing so would harm the person
  • Continuing to take personal inventory and admitting when one is wrong
  • Seeking enlightenment and connection with the higher power via prayer and meditation
  • Carrying the message of the 12 Steps to others in need

    Help For Food Addiction

    Science is still working to understand and find treatments for food addiction.

    Some argue that recovery from food addiction may be more complicated than recovery from other kinds of addictions. Alcoholics, for example, can ultimately abstain from drinking alcohol. But people who are addicted to food still need to eat.

    A nutritionist, psychologist, or doctor who is educated about food addiction may be able to help you break the cycle of compulsive overeating.

    What Is A Food Addiction

    Food Addiction does not technically exist in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders .

    The DSM-5 is the manual from the American Psychiatric association that, in the United States,defines specific criteria for diagnosing mental disorders.

    Why is food addiction not in the DSM-5? It turns out the problem with food addiction being an addiction is that we need food to eat everyday.

    Unlike alcohol, we have to live with food.

    You can free yourself from alcohol, however you can never free yourself from food.

    (As an aside, alcohol and other substance addictions can have withdrawal symptoms like shaking and even death in some cases.

    According to the National Institute on Drug Abuses Principles of Drug Addiction Treatment: A Research-Based Guide, short-term residential programs developed the idea of using a modified 12-Step approach to provide a shorter stay in treatment that included follow-up through a 12-Step fellowship.9 This is seen as a way to provide the important post-treatment structure that helps people maintain long-term recovery.     How Does Food Addicts Anonymous Work

    The program works by asking members to admit their powerlessness over food addiction and that their lives have become unmanageable, as stated in the first step of the 12-step program. Instead of trying to cure the addiction, members can focus on abstinence from foods. The foods recommended to abstain from include sugar, flour, wheat, and limited dietary fats, although members are still encouraged to eat a variety of foods, as long as what is eaten is kept track of.

    Members are asked to find a higher power other than themselves to help them in their recovery process to abstain from specific foods and reduce cravings. With attendance of meetings and reading the literature, finding a sponsor in the program to help work the steps is another key factor to successfully recovering from their addiction. A sponsor in the program of Food Addicts Anonymous is a longtime member who has been abstinent and can help guide individuals on how to follow the food plan. A sponsor will have good knowledge about the food plan, works the steps of the program and uses the steps in their own daily lives to continue recovery.     • use unhealthy practices to lose weight such as laxatives and vomiting.
    • associate eating with other pleasurable activities such as watching TV.
    • eat when they are bored, full, or in feeling bad.
    • hide their eating much like alcoholics or drug addicts do.
    • associate food with either reward or punishment.

    These are the typical behaviors of people who are food addicts. The popular opinion is that food addiction is not as serious or is easier to treat than other addictions. This is not the case. Food addiction is as complex and difficult to deal with as other addictions. It requires the same treatments as many of the other addictions as well.
