  • You do not possess any self-control when it comes to your appetite
  • You lie about how much food you eat
  • You feel a sense of self-disgust about your appearance and you eat to drown your sorrows
  • You wake up in the middle of the night to eat food
  • Eating is more about pleasure than satisfying your appetite
  • You hide food around the house/office
  • You hide food away from your loved-one
  • You feel depressed/regret/guilt after binge eating
  • You eat long after you are full
  • Binge eating episodes last for around two hours, but sometimes lasts an entire day

Although an addiction to food may begin at any age, most sufferers will develop the addiction in their adolescence or early adulthood.

    Sometimes its hard to know whats normal when it comes to thinking about food. I mean, we NEED it, right? So we kinda need to think about it. True. But there is a line that can be crossed from general thinking about food because our bodies need fuel to becoming straight up obsessed with food.     • Not being able to fully concentrate on other tasks between meals because youre planning the next time youll eat

    Ok so that was probably a combination of enlightening and depressing! The point in telling you all of this is not to elicit fear but in fact to help you understand why you experience the cravings and addictions to certain foods. Now that you know, lets dive into my top tips for overcoming your processed food addiction.

    1. Stop allowing yourself to believe that your value is tied to your eating habits.;Its a lie! Eating processed foods does not make you worse than others and abstaining does not make you better. The choice of how to fuel your body is yours to make.

    2. If there are times that you eat processed foods, do not beat yourself up. The faster that you stand back up and rebound, the more you have created a sustainable lifestyle. Im going to give you my own example. I usually eat 1-2 squares of dark chocolate a few nights per week but one day this past week, I decided to eat the whole bar which contained 16 grams of sugar. I never felt guilty about doing that. I didnt feel like I went off plan. I ate it and enjoyed it and moved on. Heres what you have to remember: make the best choices that you can and move on. If you direct your energy on the past then you wont have the momentum that you need to move forward.

    4. Eat regularly throughout the day.;This helps to keep blood sugar levels stable throughout the day. The less that you frontload your calories the more tempted you will be to engage in processed foods.

    Food addiction hijacks your brains reward system in the same way as other addictions.

    Studies reveal that high-fat, high-sugar, processed foods affect the brain in the same way as drugs such as heroin and cocaine. These foods affect neurotransmitters such as dopamine in the brain eating these foods makes us feel good temporarily and crave more.

    Foods that are high in refined sugar, wheat, or salt or a factory developed combination of all three ingredients to create a highly palatable food are the most problematic when it comes to addiction. Most of todays junk foods are designed to be as addictive as possible, which keeps people coming back for more .

    Both these beverages reduce inhibitions and cause poor dieting choices. With coffee and other drinks that are high in caffeine, the body begins to crave sugary coffee cakes or doughnuts. Plus, too much caffeine can create anxiety and for too many people junk food and emotional eating have become the most effective tools to treat anxiety.

    Alcohol definitely lowers inhibitions more than coffee or other drinks with other caffeine content. Theres also a high likelihood that the bar or restaurant will have addictive foods like chicken wings and french fries and drinking lots of alcohol will only make it more likely that a relapse will occur. If youre alcohol dependent, you might want to handle that first. One addiction at a time.
