Popular Beliefs About Video Games
There are many misguided beliefs and misconceptions about video games. In some schools of thought, these computerized programs are entirely negative, promoting violence, sexism, and social isolation among young people. Other perspectives hold that video games can be a valuable tool for education and character development, allowing children to simulate the roles of powerful heroes. In reality, video games have both positive and negative characteristics, and the effect of playing games often depends on the players attitudes toward games and life in general.
Parenting Science proposes that the compelling quality of video games may not be due to an addictive response, but to a psychological phenomenon called flow. Flow takes place when individuals become so immersed in an activity that they lose track of time. Any engaging activity even work or school projects can induce a sense of flow once a person is caught up in the process. While there is nothing necessarily wrong with being immersed in an engaging, educational game, this process can turn into a compulsion if the user is unable to stop, and if it takes time away from other important activities or relationships.

How To Quit Video Games
1. Quit Cold Turkey
You can drop gaming altogether. While this is the least effective strategy to overcome video game addiction, it does work for some people. However, this has a low success rate because of the way gaming affects our brains.
Instead of trying to quit gaming altogether, try to do a dopamine detox. A dopamine detox is an exercise to deprive yourself of activities that are too stimulating and fun. Delete all social media applications from your phone, uninstall all your games, and disconnect your computer and keep it somewhere that is not easily accessible.
Before starting the dopamine fast, try to find other activities to do. Try picking up a skill that involves creating something physical. Try learning a new instrument. Pick up a sport, or start a new exercise routine. Try to spend more time in nature â go for a hike or a run. You can even try to start meditating and cultivating more internal awareness. If you can come to terms with the reason you play video games in the first place, it will be easier to find ways to avoid gaming.
Dopamine detoxes are the most effective when done with someone. Have a friend do it with you. You can check in with each other for fifteen minutes a day and hold each other accountable.

Gaming Addiction And Substance Abuse
It is by no means uncommon for an individual to suffer from more than one addiction or even more than one type of addiction at once, and many behavioural addictions are often found to cooccur with substance abuse disorders. This condition of cooccurrence sometimes called dual diagnosis or dual disorder typically requires specialised treatment of a more complex kind than that provided to individuals suffering from only one addiction.
Partly because video game addiction is a comparatively new phenomenon, and partly because of the aforementioned lack of unanimity regarding its diagnostic status, the extent to which those suffering from gaming addiction may be especially susceptible to substance abuse disorders has not yet been particularly well established.
Some research suggests that many gamers even those identifying as problem gamers may actually be less likely to develop substance abuse disorders as their brains reward centres are already being stimulated in a similar way to how they would be under the influence of drugs. On the other hand, it is clear that in certain cases gaming addiction has developed subsequent to the establishment of addiction to drink and/or drugs, and similarly that in other cases, it has pre-existed.
On the other hand, some gamers may turn to drugs especially stimulants such as cocaine to give them what they believe will be a performance-enhancing edge, and/or help them stay awake for longer periods during protracted gaming bouts.
Seeking Help And Treatment
Video games have had a tremendous impact both positive and negative on the cultural attitudes, psychological development, and lifestyle choices of both children and adults. While these games can be viewed as a risk to players physical or emotional health, they have also been promoted as effective educational tools and have even been used for physical or cognitive rehabilitation in clinical settings. Yet for individuals who have become caught in a cycle of compulsive gaming, video games can become destructive. The growing popularity of video games has created a new awareness of the problem of compulsive gaming, which in turn has led to the development of treatment programs for this addictive process. Treatment for video game addiction focuses on behavioral modification therapies, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy , that guide the client away from the obsessive thought patterns and obsessive habits of addiction. Group therapy is a valuable source of motivation and moral support, especially for individuals who have lost contact with friends or peers as a result of their game addiction. Family or marriage counseling can help educate loved ones about the disorder and create a more stable home environment.

Can Gaming Improve Your Health
Most of us have done it. You know, tried to justify a games night with the lads, telling the missus that we only get to cut loose every now and again, and that we wont stay out too late, blah, blah, blah. However, what you might have never done is tell the other side of the truth: that gaming if done with moderation can make you healthier, turn you into a better man, and you should do more of it.
Recent research has shown that gaming can have a positive impact on your cognitive health. Certain areas of your brain, for example, the frontal lobe and the anterior cingulate, and those responsible for spatial awareness, planning, and other skills, can be strengthened by gaming. Be aware though that different genres of games have different impacts. Platform games can improve your memory, while puzzle games like Tetris can help with cravings and help you maintain willpower, for example, if you are on a diet.
Gaming can also help you to de-stress and increase well-being. For example, it can provide a sense of catharsis that can help you to let out your emotion after a tough time, like a long week at work. Gaming can, therefore, be good for your brain. One fascinating metaanalysis of the effects of active games on cognitive performance found they, as compared with a control group, had an effect size of 0.9 for inhibitory control and a smaller effect size of 0.35 for cognitive flexibility. In fact, global cognitive performance was improved significantly using active games
The Tragedy Of Shawn Woolley
In 2001, Shawn Woolley killed himself. The online game, Everquest, was running at the time of his death. It was his mother that discovered him dead. His mother blamed the game for her son’s suicide, while the CEO of Sony disagreed.
There was no proof that Everquest resulted in his suicide. His mother stated he was addicted to the game and his suicide could be due to a possible love interest in the game. However, there is no concrete proof that it was the cause.
Video game addiction may have played a big part. Shawn also had a lot of medical issues , which could have been worsened by the fact he was on his computer all of the time. He also stopped working, stopped paying his bills, and stopping interacting with his family.
Who is to blame? That’s hard to say. His mother tried to get her son help, and it was not Sony’s responsibility to ensure people seek help. But this is proof that video game addiction is a real issue.
In 2002, Shawn’s mother founded On-Line Gamers Anonymous to help others with this addiction
It’s up to the addicted person’s friends and family to confront the person about their addiction. They have to take responsibility as much as the addicted person. They can’t just say, “It’s only a video game.” They have to step in and help.

Video game addiction should be taken as seriously as any other addiction.

A Bleak Landscape: The Costs And Casualties
As mentioned earlier, Iran is a major destination, not just a corridor for illicit opiates. Nor, it should be mentioned, are opiates Irans only problem drugs. Opium and heroin are smuggled from the east, while hallucinogenic and chemical-based designer drugs enter Iran from Turkey and Bandar Abbas.23 The influx of narcotics into Iran, opiates in particular, has had a profoundly adverse impact on public health and public security.
The actual size of Irans drug user and drug addict populations is difficult to pin down, given that reliable data is scarce, Iranian official statistics tend to be more conservative than figures presented by the UNODC, and Iranian authorities restrict what the UNODC Tehran office may share publicly. Compounding the difficulty of gaining definite estimates of prevalence and incidence of substance abuse in Iran, as Mokri points out, are ocial stigmatization along with legal restrictions on substance abuse prevents drug users from admitting their act, offering clear data and referring to governmental sectors.24
How I Helped Him Stop Gaming
Initially, I required a full detox from my son when the university asked him to leave. He hadnt attended a class in two months. I focused on his physical health with a clean diet, and I took him to my fitness classes in the hopes that the dopamine hit from exercise would elevate his mood. It worked.
He began to feel and look much better and it helped him to stop gaming. However, because he was still in denial of his addiction, he relapsed eight weeks later, following his return to school. Thus, began a roller coaster ride of several relapses.
Eventually, his counseling sessions with a therapist, at his university, began helping him to find healthier coping mechanisms for his anxiety. He continued to exercise and still maintains, today, that physical fitness is what saved him then and continues to help keep him feeling balanced.

Are You Feeling Lonely
Feeling lonely is an emotion we all experience, especially if you live in a first world Western country where individualism has been put on a pedestal.
Of course, hiding yourself in games doesnt make you LESS lonely.
Because while games are good for distracting yourself, they dont offer true social interaction, even if youre interacting with other players.
And when the game gets turned off, your social life has deteriorated more than ever

How My Sons Gaming Addiction Started
Bullying in middle school is what sent my son hungering for meaningful connection and acceptance. He fulfilled that hunger in his online, multi-player gaming community. But many of the kids he was playing with were also dealing with their own issues and playing video games with them didnt solve his issues of low self-esteem. When he entered university several years later, he became overwhelmed with a sense of doom. He didnt have the confidence to believe he could manage his degree program. He turned to games again to cope and eventually, became gaming addicted.
