New Center Helps Addicts

In Allegheny County last year, 689 people died of overdoses, up 22 percent from 2019, with the increase due in large part to the pandemic, according to Father Michael Decewicz, who founded the dioceses Addiction Recovery Ministry in 2018.

Addiction is a disease of isolation. That isolation leads to more use, to relapses, Father Decewicz said. So many people I have seen during this pandemic who have relapsed have moved away from their 12-step support group. That loss of fellowshipreally had a great impact.

Supporters of ARM are set to celebrate the opening of its new location with the goal of helping more people suffering from substance abuse disorders.

A grand opening will be held on Sunday, Sept. 12, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Venerable Matthew Talbot Center for Hope and Healing. It is located in the lower level of Saint Francis of Assisi Church in Harmar, 2599 Freeport Rd, Pittsburgh, 15238. The church is part of the new Christ the King Parish.

Father Decewicz, who retired recently from parish ministry, moved ARM from Sharpsburg to Harmar and will continue as director.

Father Levi Hartle will kick off the program Sunday, leading Prayer and Praise Nation Pittsburgh. Attendees will be invited to paint the names of loved ones lost to addiction on rocks that will be placed in a new memory garden. The celebration will close with the reading of the 12 Steps and 12 Promises and the song Amazing Grace.

Thomas Health Saint Francis Hospital Introduce Bridge Device

CHARLESTON, W.Va. A bridge gets you from one place to another.

That is how the BRIDGE device used by Saint Francis Hospitals Addiction Healing Center to help opioid addicts get through withdrawal got its name.

The device is used to help patients get from whatever they are addicted to, to where they need to get to in the sobering process.

The hospital spoke for the first time Thursday about their experiences using the new ear device technology that works as a nerve-field stimulator to help reduce symptoms of opioid withdrawal.

The patients using this feel much better about themselves because the symptoms associated with opioid withdrawal are not as serve and in some instances completely obliterated by this device, said Dan Lauffer, President of Thomas Health.

Thomas Health partnered with Innovative Health Solutions, the manufacturer of the device, to bring it to Saint Francis. The BRIDGE device is a device that is attached to the ear of a patient. They have it on for 5 days, helping the patients cope with withdrawals. It has 120 hours of battery life.

Its basically a percutaneous neo stimulator put on the ear, Joe Deegan, the Business Development Liaison for the Addiction Healing Center at St. Francis Hospital, said. It has stimulating electrodes that go right to the center of the brain where the withdrawal symptoms regarding opioid withdrawal are located and it basically blocks the symptomatology.

The FDA cleared the device in November 2017.

What Is The Prayer Of St Francis Assisi

The prayer of St. Francis Assisi is a prayer to God asking for peace, love, forgiveness, faith, and hope. It starts with the line, Lord, make me an instrument of your peace, and continues on as a plea to God for strength and guidance through difficult times.1

The prayer of St. Francis Assisi is as follows:1

Lord, make me an instrument of your peaceWhere there is hatred, let me sow loveWhere there is injury, pardonWhere there is doubt, faithWhere there is despair, hopeWhere there is darkness, lightAnd where there is sadness, joy

O Divine Master, grant that I mayNot so much seek to be consoled as to consoleTo be understood, as to understandTo be loved, as to loveFor it is in giving that we receiveAnd it’s in pardoning that we are pardonedAnd it’s in dying that we are born to Eternal LifeAmen

At Faith in Recovery, we incorporate scripture and prayer into our treatments to provide patients with the most effective and encouraging form of care possible. Anyone who struggles with addiction can begin their addiction recovery with our medically monitored detox.

Device Helping Addiction Recovery Patients With Withdrawal Symptoms Sees Success

St. Francois Co. drug treatment center closure could put patients at risk

Daniel Tucker is looking forward to enjoying the holidays with family, but he’ll also be celebrating a milestone.

He’ll be 90 days sober at the end of the month.

“My decision was to change my life,” he said.

This change is partly thanks to a device that can fit in the palm of his hand. The NSS-2 BRIDGE device uses electrical frequencies to stop the brain from feeling the pain caused by opioid withdrawal.

Tucker describes this as having the worst case of the flu.

“Extreme nausea, restlessness, many sleepless nights,” he said.

The Addiction Healing Center at St. Francis Hospital is the first place in West Virginia to use the device.

“Its a way to comfort you in the worst days ever of your entire life,” Tucker said.

His struggle with drug addiction began in 2011 when he was in college. He tried several times to get sober on his own but wasn’t successful.

“Trapped in this cycle and looking for any escape,” Tucker said.

For him wearing the BRIDGE device for 5 days brought him the relief he had been searching for.

“It made things so much better almost instantly,” he said.

This is something that health professionals who work in the center have noticed too. They have seen patients experience a decrease in symptoms within a half hour or sometimes sooner.

“They’re up and engaged much sooner, same day usually,” said Candace Whitman-Workman.

Tucker hopes the treatment that worked so well for him will become more readily available to others.

The Purpose Of The St Francis Project Is To Bring The Hope Healing Compassion Forgiveness And Joy Of The Kingdom Of God To A World Broken By Despair Suffering Anger And Need

The St. Francis Outreach Project was started by Trinity Episcopal Church in 2008. It was a commitment to raise and give back $1,000,000 to our communities over a ten year period. The monies were given out through grants, whose criteria were based on the Prayer of St. Francis. Trinitys ten-year commitment ended in 2019 and three local churches joined with Trinity to extend this ministry another three years. These churches are First Presbyterian Church of Florence, First United Methodist Church of Florence and St. Bartholomews Episcopal Church. The goal each year is $50,000 with a single grant cycle, whose due date has been moved to June 30th. Guidelines and applications are available on this website. Due to the pandemic, for 2021 we have only $30,000 to give away and we are asking requests to be $2,000 or less.

The fund is supported by fundraisers and financial gifts throughout the year and administrated by a 12 member board of directors, representative of our four churches. If you would like to make a donation to this ministry, please make checks payable to The St. Francis Project and mail to P.O. Box M, Florence, AL 35631. All gifts are tax-deductible.

Thomas Health plans to open a substance abuse treatment unit at Saint Francis Hospital in Charleston.

The health care provider is at least the second company in West Virginia to say it was able to expand drug treatment in part because the federal government loosened Medicaid requirements for providers in the state.

Dan Lauffer, president and CEO of Thomas Health, said Wednesday that the Addiction Healing Center at Charlestons Saint Francis Hospital is scheduled to open around mid-April.

The center will include beds for up to 16 people. Lauffer said they hope to offer medication-assisted treatment, while 12-step programs may also be a part of patients care.

He said we are trying to create a center in the community where people can be referred.

We want to be able to have a patient go to the 28-day program if they need to, but if they need intensive outpatient therapy post-28-day stay, theyre coming back to the same place, he said.

Thomas Health already offered outpatient substance abuse treatment at Saint Francis, which is located at 333 Laidley St. It also already offered 28-day stays for substance abuse, but not at Saint Francis.

The center will not add to the number of substance abuse treatment beds in the state but Lauffer said the company hopes to serve more people than they are serving now.
