Substance abuse, behavioral disorder, and mental health counselors work in a variety of settings, including inpatient and outpatient treatment centers, correctional facilities, and hospitals. Some addiction counselors work in residential treatment centers, where clients live in the facility during their recovery.
Although rewarding, the work of substance abuse, behavioral disorder, and mental health counselors is often stressful. Many counselors have large workloads and do not always have enough resources to meet the demand for their services. In addition, counselors may have to intervene in crisis situations or work with agitated clients.

Addictions And Mental Health Courses
Classes in addictions and mental health programs provide in-depth information and hands-on training to ensure students not only understand the history and theory of treatment, but are also able to effectively react to a variety of different situations and clients. Interview techniques, relapse prevention and crisis management are common courses in addictions and mental health programs.
Other courses in addictions and mental health programs will likely fall into these two areas:
- Research. Analyzing client behaviour , past case studies and other psychological information are integral in helping others with addictions or mental health issues.

College Trades Or University Program
These programs prepare students to help prevent substance abuse, counsel individuals and families with drug and alcohol problems, and perform intervention and therapeutic services for persons suffering from addiction. They include courses in individual and group counselling skills, psychology of addiction, sociology, crisis intervention, substance abuse identification methodologies, substance abuse treatment modalities, substance abuse prevention and treatment resources, pharmacology and behavioural aspects of abused substances, treatment evaluation, patient observation and education, group dynamics, professional standards and ethics, and applicable laws and regulations.

Step : Earn A Master’s Degree In Addiction Counseling
Again, requirements to become a drug and alcohol counselor will vary depending on the location of practice. You’ll typically need a minimum of a bachelor’s degree to practice alcohol and drug counseling. However, as the prevalence of co-occurring substance use and related disorders increases, many addiction counselors pursue an additional license as a mental health counselor so they can provide the expert help their clients need.
Several states have started to recognize the need for master’s degree level addiction counseling licensure and certification. But that’s not the only reason why a graduate program is your best option if you’re looking for a long-term career in the addiction counseling field. Earning a master’s degree will open a much broader range of career options and boost your earning potential. This course provides an introduction to addictions, mental health and concurrent disorders, the unique features of each and the integration of services and supports in addictions and mental health. Students explore the prevention and treatment continuum in Canada, historical and cultural perspectives and frameworks and models. A bio-psycho-social-spiritual framework is addressed, and current practices are reviewed, including research and best practice guidelines.

Substance abuse and addiction counselors work intimately with clients and families from the initial assessment. It takes a whole team of social workers, counselors, and doctors to develop recovery plans. When needed, counselors must contact other therapists about cases and make referrals, while keeping in compliance with privacy regulations in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
These professionals work at in-patient and outpatient treatment centers, hospitals, and government agencies. They also work in schools, prisons, and juvenile detention facilities. Substance abuse and addiction counselors provide holistic treatment, coordinating medical, social, and mental health services.

Supervisor Letter And Evaluation
All applications must be accompanied by a completed Supervisor Evaluation and a letter from your current supervisor on employer letterhead. The letter should confirm your position title, length of time in position, and number of hours of work experience as outlined in the Experience section of the Manual.
Licenses Certifications And Registrations
Substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors in private practice must be licensed. Licensing requirements vary by state, but all states require these counselors to have a masters degree and complete a specified number of hours of supervised clinical experience. In addition, counselors must pass an examination and complete continuing education every year. Contact information for your state’s regulating board is available through the National Board for Certified Counselors.
Licensure requirements for substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors outside of private practice vary by state. For example, not all states require applicants to have a specific degree, but some require them to pass an exam. Individual Vs Group Therapy
While any counseling therapy for drug abuse treatment is better than none, group therapy is generally preferred over individual therapy. In group therapy, youâre more likely to be both challenged and supported by peers who are also going through rehab.
Twelve-step programs like Narcotics or Alcoholics Anonymous are also peer support groups. They can be a useful part of your recovery program. But keep in mind that they arenât led by a trained psychotherapist and, thus, arenât the same as group therapy.

A key focus is assisting clients to identify and highlight their strengths by finding positive outcomes that are related to their concerns or issues. Learning to facilitate client self-empowerment and development occurs by acquiring additional skills through the effective use of queries, observation, self-reflection and a comprehensive understanding of a client’s behaviour and communication style. Students also examine information and assistances concerning crisis, grief and bereavement. Learning outcomes are achieved through the use of lecture, discussion, experiential exercises and presentation of audio and visual resources.
