The Chemistry Of Addiction

All addiction can be characterized as a hijacking of the brains reward system. The human brain is designed to reward us for activities that help us survive and succeed in life. It does this primarily with a chemical called dopaminea hormone that both makes us feel good and motivates us to seek out the thing or activity that made us feel good. Dopamine release constitutes a high, and we experience it when we eat good food, laugh at a joke, engage in sexual activity, or achieve the aptly-named runners high.

Why are people addicted to porn? Its in large part due to this dopamine reward.

In the normal pattern of reward, we perform an activity that makes us feel good, our brain rewards us with dopamine, and then begins building memories of where that good feeling and dopamine release came from. In the future, we seek out those things that gave us a dopamine high in the past and repeat them. This is how we develop habits, preferences, and hobbies.

The Typical Church Approach Doesnt Work

According to Dr. Roberts, churches often treat this issue as a moral one, but fail to recognize itâs mainly a brain problem, âWe tell men to try harder, pray harder, love Jesus more.â Dr. Roberts adds, âBut, what starts off as a moral problem, quickly becomes a brain problem. Telling a man to try harder is only tightening the ânooseâ of bondage.â

Today, science sheds new light on biblical truth regarding strongholds of the mind and how a person becomes enslaved to sin.

First Teaching Higher Standards Makes Rebellion More Appealing

Being raised in Christian community, I know that teaching a high moral standard didnt make me want to sin less: rather, I wanted to sin more. The apostle Paul wrote, f it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, You shall not covet. But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness .

This is the hot stove principle: Tell a child not to touch the hot stove, and the forbidden act suddenly seems all the more attractive the biblical motto of the harlot reiterates this conceit: Stolen water is sweet and bread eaten in secret is pleasant .

The Why Really Does Matter

In addition to the three findings listed above, the study found that the most common reasons for engaging in online sexual behaviors involve sexual pleasurewith 94.4 percent of users seeking sexual satisfaction, 87.2 percent seeking arousal, and 86.5 percent seeking . However, a desire to regulate uncomfortable emotions was not far behind, with 73.8 percent of users hoping to alleviate stress, 70.8 percent trying to assuage boredom, and 53 percent wanting to forget their daily problems.

This result is very much in line with what we know about other compulsive and addictive behaviors, including substance use disorders and gambling disorder. In fact, almost any addict of any type can tell you that the biggest trigger for use, regardless of the substance or behavior, is emotional discomfortstress, anxiety, depression, fear, boredom, loneliness, shame, etc. In short, these individuals use not to feel pleasure but to escape emotional discomfort. It is a desire for emotional escape rather than a desire to get high that is the crux of all addictions and compulsive behavior.

So What Is The Answer

How To Quit Porn Addiction

At first glance it would seem the conservative standards are the problem: get rid of the rigid moral code and the rest goes away, right? But when we seek to rid ourselves of Christian morals for the sake of keeping addiction at bay, we are playing fast and lose with theology. Christian morality is not merely an idea about how to live it is based on real historythe belief that the Creator of heaven and earth has actually revealed Himself in human history. We desire to follow biblical morals because we are convinced that Jesus is the Christ, the revelation of God.

No. Instead of discarding our morals, we need to embrace the One who gave them:

Why Do Some People Become Addicted To Sex While Others Dont

One of the most common questions we get is why are some people addicted to sex while others arent?

Although we understand more about drug and alcohol addiction than ever before, there are still many questions surrounding sex addiction, how to define it, what causes it and why some people are more prone to it than others.

The causes of sexual addiction are complex and there is no single factor that determines whether a person will become addicted to sex or not. An individuals risk for addiction is influenced by a combination of biological and environmental factors however and this can therefore make them more or less likely to suffer from it.

This can include:

Genetics: genes can play a significant role in whether or not someone develops an addiction. For example, children with an addicted parent are four times more likely than children without an addicted parent to suffer addiction issues themselves.

Underlying psychiatric conditions: individuals who suffer from psychiatric conditions such as anxiety, depression or mood illnesses have a higher chance of suffering from addiction than someone who does not suffer from such disorders.

An addiction typically starts when psychiatric disorders overwhelm individuals with feelings of sadness, anger or confusion. Burdened with these feelings, individuals may look for a self-medicating solution such as sex and this is what can lead to addiction.

Christians And Addiction Language

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders doesnt use the word addiction for anythingnot drugs, alcohol, nor any behavior. The language of addiction is largely shaped by culturenot medicine. Christian counselor Ed Welch explains:

In popular use, addiction has become a very elastic and ambiguous category that contains everything from the frivolous to the grave . It also includes the unequally yoked categories of disease and sin. Given its ambiguities, there is a growing sentiment that we need a different word .

On top of these cultural ambiguities, addiction language in Christian community is also shaped by sin language. A year ago I heard Ed Welch give a talk at a conference in Philadelphia entitled, Addiction, Temptation, & Voluntary Slavery. He spoke about how so often the Big Book used by AA members seems so much more alive to them than the words of the Bible. Why? One reason is the Big Book uses addiction language. The Bible does not.

The recovering alcoholic needs to understand the language of the Bible. The Bible doesnt talk of addiction, but rather slavery to sin. The Bible doesnt speak of the root of habitual sin as merely a disease, but as idolatry. Once these categories are understood, many portions of Scripture can and do come to life for the struggling addict.

She was joyless, worn out, tired, and in need of a change. In this interview, Wendy will challenge Christians to take 40 days to focus on fasting from something they turn to instead of Jesus for comfort. She invited people to break free from a dependence on sugar and taste the goodness of God.
