Am I Addicted To Vaping

What Are The Health Effects Of Vaping

Signs That You’re Addicted To Vaping 2

Vaping hasn’t been around long enough for us to know how it affects the body over time. But health experts are reporting serious lung damage in people who vape, including some deaths.

Vaping puts nicotine into the body. Nicotine is highly addictive and can:

  • slow brain development in teens and affect memory, concentration, learning, self-control, attention, and mood
  • increase the risk of other types of addiction later in life

E-cigarettes also:

  • may cause serious lung damage and even death
  • can lead to smoking cigarettes and other forms of tobacco use

Some people use e-cigarettes to vape , THC oil, and other dangerous chemicals. Besides irritating the lungs, these drugs also affect how someone thinks, acts, and feels.

How Addictive Is Vaping Really

Doctors, psychologists, and other health professionals always recommend treating addiction with a multifaceted approach, but no one can argue with the fact that nicotine is addictive. So addictive, in fact, that the National Institutes of Health call it as addictive heroin and cocaine.

When a person inhales nicotine, it gets absorbed into the blood and starts affecting the brain in just 10 seconds. Nicotine disrupts the normal relationship between a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine and the receptors that acetylcholine attaches to. Without that interruption, ACh plays an important role in muscle contraction, memory, cognition and more.

When nicotine attaches to ACh receptors in place of ACh, it triggers a number of chemical reactions that result in temporary feel-good sensations. Those sensations include relaxation, alertness or focus, calmness and euphoria. But those sensations are short-lived, usually subsiding within minutes, because your body removes the substance so quickly — just two hours after ingesting nicotine, about half will already be gone.

No matter how you inhale nicotine — regular cigarette or e-cigarette — it’s still an addictive substance.

Nicotine’s pleasurable effects combined with its short half-life leave people feeling like they need another dose soon after the first one. This results in a vicious cycle of addiction.

Reports Of Deaths Related To Vaping

The Food and Drug Administration has alerted the public to thousands of reports of serious lung illnesses associated with vaping, including dozens of deaths. They are working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to investigate the cause of these illnesses. Many of the suspect products tested by the states or federal health officials have been identified as vaping products containing THC, the main psychotropic ingredient in marijuana. Some of the patients reported a mixture of THC and nicotine and some reported vaping nicotine alone. While the CDC and FDA continue to investigate possible other contributing substances, CDC has identified a thickening agentVitamin E acetateas a chemical of concern among people with e-cigarette or vaping associated lung injuries. They recommend that people should not use any product containing Vitamin E acetate, or any vaping products containing THC particularly from informal sources like friends, family, or in-person and online dealers. They also warn against modifying any products purchased in stores, or using any vaping products bought on the street. People, including health professionals, should report any adverse effects of vaping products. The CDC has posted an information page for consumers.

    Nicotine Withdrawal And Your Mood

As your body adjusts to life without nicotine, you may have mood swings or feel increased anxiety or sadness. If you become depressed or are having extreme sadness, do not ignore these feelings or keep them to yourself. Let someone who cares about you know how you are feeling, and talk to a doctor or another trusted healthcare professional.

Are There Any Concerns And Dangers Of Vaping

Although vape manufacturers claim that vaping gives you pure nicotine and harmless vapor, The National Institute of Health has now started investigating the effects of propylene glycerol and glycerin.

While vaping eliminate cancer-causing elements found in conventional smoking, studies have linked this practice to the weakening of the immune system. Studies have shown that vaping inhibits the functioning of 358 genes associated with fighting infections as compared to smoking which has shown to only inhibit 53 genes.

Although the vaping pens and e-liquids do not have the same toxins found in conventional cigarettes, the harsh truth is that they still have nicotine, an addictive substance. Nicotine has been associated with withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, anxiety, insomnia, restlessness, and more. According to CDC, nicotine is as addictive as alcohol, heroin, and cocaine.

    Research Studies Of Vaping Addiction

There are various studies that have been conducted to determine whether vaping addiction is dangerous or not. One such study was conducted by the Pen State College of Medicine back in 2014. In this study, volunteer ex-smokers were interviewed. The respondents reported that on average, they were smoking 24 cigarettes on a daily basis, and once they switched to vaping, they reported that they had 24 vape sessions regularly.

The addiction was found to be the same, but vaping was found to have a greater influence on behavioral and psychological changes. A few of them had instances where they woke at night to get a nicotine dose while other e-cig users were able to wait until the next day to vape. Additionally, most respondents admitted that they had few cravings for e-cigs as compared to their previous cravings for conventional cigarettes.

This study concluded that the difference in addiction to e-cigs and cigarettes could be attributed to usage smoking is a one-go practice, and many usually finished the whole cigarette at one-go, while in vaping they took several puffs after a short period- 2-3 puffs for every 30 minutes.

    How I Quit Vaping

Once you quit if you find your mind playing tricks on you , saying things like Ill just have one and then adding a reason understand this is a trap.

If you have just one hit of a vape youll need to start detoxing from the beginning. After you have managed one week, itll be so much easier. At any point, just one vape on a night out, or to deal with something stressful will simply start the cycle of being hooked again.

This ties in with Tip 2 Find Healthy Substitutes. When you find yourself tempted to have just one, do something else or simply tell your mind that youre a non-smoker now.

    How Nicotine Changes The Brain

When someone inhales nicotine, it absorbs into their blood and starts to affect the brain within 10 seconds. Nicotine affects the brain by changing the relationship between certain neurotransmitters and receptor sites. Specifically, nicotine alters how acetylcholine interacts with receptor sites.

When its functioning as it should, ACh plays a vital role in functions such as memory and cognition, as well as muscle contraction. When nicotine attaches to ACh receptors instead of the ACh, it triggers a feel-good brain response. Someone who is using nicotine may experience brief increases in feelings of focus, alertness, euphoria or relaxation.

    Physical Changes Caused By Nicotine

Nicotine can also cause physical changes in the brain, some temporary, and others that some researchers, like Picciotto, worry could be long-lasting.

But animal studies show nicotine also can cause issues with brain function, leading to problems with focus, memory, and learningand these may be long-lasting. In animals, nicotine can cause a developing brain to have an increased number of connections between cells in the cerebral cortex region, says Picciotto. If this is also true for humans, the increased connections would interfere with a persons cognitive abilities, Picciotto says.

To illustrate how this might work, Picciotto gives an example. A student sitting in a noisy classroom, with traffic passing by the window, needs to be able to focus her attention away from the distracting sounds so she can understand what the teacher says. Brains not exposed to nicotine learn to decrease connections, and refinement within the brain can happen efficiently, Picciotto says. But when you flood the system with nicotine, this refinement doesnt happen as efficiently.

Theres hope that the current vaping epidemic wont lead to major health problems like lung cancer or pulmonary disease, Picciotto says. But we may still see an epidemic of cognitive function problems and attention problems. The changes made in the brain could persist.

Addicted To Vaped Nicotine Teenagers Have No Clear Path To Quitting

A Harvard addiction medicine specialist is getting calls from distraught parents around the country. A Stanford psychologist is getting calls from rattled school officials around the world. A federal agency has ordered a public hearing on the issue.

Alarmed by the addictive nature of nicotine in e-cigarettes and its impact on the developing brain, public health experts are struggling to address a surging new problem: how to help teenagers quit vaping.

Until now, the storm over e-cigarettes has largely focused on how to keep the products away from minors. But the pervasiveness of nicotine addiction among teenagers who already use the devices is now sinking in and there is no clear science or treatment to help them stop.

Nobody is quite sure what to do with those wanting to quit, as this is all so new, said Ira Sachnoff, president of Peer Resource Training and Consulting in San Francisco, which trains students to educate peers about smoking and vaping. We are all searching for quit ideas and services for this new nicotine delivery method. It is desperately needed.

A harsh irony underlies the search for solutions: Devices that manufacturers designed to help adults quit smoking have become devices that teenagers who never smoked are themselves fighting to quit.

The survey also found that many students believe they are vaping just flavoring. In fact, just about all brands include nicotine, and Juul has particularly high levels of it.

    Vaping Addiction & Marijuana

Marijuana users have come up with some creative techniques. From hookahs to bongs, the rates of marijuana use are increasing. In fact, a study showed that one in five people who vape have used their vaporizer to get high on marijuana, which makes vaping highly addictive.

Contrary to popular belief, marijuana addiction is not a myth. In fact, more than 360,000 people on marijuana were admitted to treatment for addiction, according to data presented by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in 2010.

Vaping gives users the chance to get high without combustion. Although vaporizers spare the respiratory system, marijuana may still affect the cognitive functioning and brain structure of the user. For teens, these effects lead to poor concentration and high dropout rates.

Understanding the signs and symptoms of nicotine withdrawal, the hazards of nicotine addiction and vaping, and how to effectively quit all contribute to your childs success.

For instance, while vaping is touted as a cigarette replacement, some e-liquids carry as much nicotine as regular cigarettes.

The popular e-cigarette manufacturer claims its products deliver nicotine up 2.7 faster than other brands. This may come as a surprise to those who think they are just enjoying the flavoring.

A survey by the Truth Initiative found that over 60% of JUUL users did not know e-cigarettes contain nicotine.

Research on the dangers of vaping is limited because the practice is relatively new. However, early studies have already shown links between vaping and worsening asthma, as well as exposure to dangerous particles, metals, and brain-stunting nicotine.

In addition, teens who vape may be more likely to turn to cigarettes and addictive substances later in life.

So You Want To Quit Vaping No One Actually Knows How

Remember when e-cigarettes were supposed to be the safer way to smoke? With cases of a mysterious, sometimes lethal respiratory illness on the rise, that myth has gone up in a cloud of vapor. Fearful of being reduced to wheezing, bed-ridden hospital patients, a growing number of users are trying to kick their vaping habit.

But how do you quit the product that was supposed to help you quit?

Basically, no one knows. Its a major research gap, says Rachel Grana, the program director at the National Cancer Institutes Tobacco Control Research Branch.

E-cigarettes often contain nicotine, THC, or both. But their design can make them more addictive, and harder to quit, than regular cigarettes. Vape pens can deliver greater doses of nicotine because they use nicotine salts, which are smoother to inhale. Add in tempting flavors like I love cookies and Unicorn milk, and tobaccos harsh flavor is almost completely obscured, making it easier to use the devices frequently and to get addicted faster.

Some parents report THAT their kids are asking for lozenges constantly, but Levy says she has no guidelines for when to cut the kids off. E-cigarette users inhale a lot more nicotine than regular smokers do. We just dont know how well nicotine replacement is going to work, she says.

Is Vaping Addictive 5 Facts About Vaping Addiction

The topic of vaping is controversial. However, one thing is for sure: as vaping is becoming a trendy habit, more and more young users start vaping. Some users vape nicotine or marijuana, which is highly addicting. At the same time, vaping creates a mental habit of vaping every 30 minutes. A definite indicator of vaping addiction is withdrawal.
