Of Women And Their Children

Person-Centered PhilosophyAmethyst recognizes that women in addiction treatment have unique needs that must be addressed holistically in order for them to heal appropriately. We seek to empower women and their children by helping them build healthy relationships, secure permanent housing and gain economic stability, as all of these factors contribute to a successful and lifelong recovery.

PurposeAmethyst focuses on single women and reuniting families by offering recovery in an integrated, family-centered environment to give women and children collective hope and opportunity to truly break the cycle of poverty and addiction.

RecoveryAmethysts model of care addresses the root causes for addiction in an atmosphere of respect and dignity, where women are encouraged to have a voice, participate in the recovery process and experience true transformation to get and stay sober.

Leading ChangeGrounded in honoring our heritage and pioneering heroines, we have broken barriers and set new standards of gender-responsive, trauma-informed treatment that have transformed lives and reformed communities, while advocating tirelessly for womens issues and eliminating the stigma of addiction.

Amethyst brought me back to life. The amazing women there nurtured me back to health. They taught me how to make healthy decisions, healthy choices, and taught me that I mattered. That my needs and wants were important. They taught me skills that I should have learned growing up, like healthy coping mechanisms, how to take care of myself and that putting my needs forward was not selfish.

Amethyst Womens Addiction Centre: On The Frontlines Of A Small Service Agency During Covid

Lois Ross, President, Local 70400

For close to four years, I have worked part-time as the Community Relations Coordinator for Amethyst Womens Addiction Centre, a feminist collective, that is unionized with PSAC and UNE, which is a component of PSAC, under Local 70040.

I also work part-time as a freelance writer and editor and belong the Canadian Freelance Union.

In some ways my work has changed a lot since the announcement of the shutdown, and in others not so much. As a freelancer, I am accustomed to working remotely. These days my home office is getting much more use though, since I am also using it to work remotely for Amethyst. Much of my work revolves around communications and publications of one sort or another, including web, social media, etc. It is a busy time now, as everyone strives to accomplish online, what was once done in person.

But thats enough about my work. what I really want to tell you about is how Amethyst, a small independent non-profit health agency, is punching above its weight.

Amethyst Womens Addiction Centre was founded more than 40 years ago by a group of concerned women who understood that womens experience of substance use and addiction stemmed from a different place than that experienced by men. Those who founded Amethyst knew that many women needed a place where they felt safe, in an environment they could trust. And so Amethyst was born.

There have been and continue to be many practical and ethical challenges.
