MILWAUKEE
For families across Wisconsin, there is a new and chilling dose of reality: CDC researchers found less addictive over-the-counter drugs, like Advil and Tylenol, are three times more effective than some of their opioid counterparts.
“After Oxycontin was approved, the company that made it really aggressively marketed opioids as the answer to pain for primary care doctors and specialists alike,” Dr. Michel McNett said. “They claimed it was not addicting and so doctors came to believe that these drugs were safe and highly effective when in fact the research that has come out has shown that that’s not actually true.”
Dr. McNett assisted in the Wisconsin Medical Examiner’s Board adoption of new prescription guidelines for the state based on the CDC research. He sat down with WISN 12 News to speak on behalf of the Medical Society of Milwaukee.
When asked why doctors had not always approached pain management with a less addictive medicinal approach all along, he said doctors had always been taught to pursue an opiate-first solution.
“I think a lot of it was misinformation,” he said. “I think ignorance is to blame too. We just didn’t know better.”

Paracetamol Ibuprofen And Other Painkillers May Harm Those Suffering From Chronic Pain
Painkillers such as paracetamol, aspirin, ibuprofen but also prescription analgesics like opioids do little to help people suffering from chronic primary pain and could actually be damaging to them, for example by causing addiction, the UKs National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has said.
The organisation, which publishes clinical practice guidelines for the National Health Service in England and Wales, instead found evidence that shows other interventions to be effective, including exercise, psychological therapy, antidepressants and acupuncture.
Chronic primary pain is defined as pain persisting for longer than three months. It is a condition in itself, such as fibromyalgia, chronic migraine and irritable bowel syndrome, not a symptom of an underlying condition. The condition can cause significant emotional distress and disability, but has proven difficult to treat. In 2016, more than £500 million was spent on prescribing painkillers a practice doctors should stop, according to Nice. Their review of 33 clinical studies found no or little evidence that painkillers benefit patients. Opioids in particular have a risk of dependence as the three observational studies showed.
The guideline is currently in its draft stage and open to public consultation until mid-September.

Ibuprofen and codeine do not mix well with some medicines.
