Can You Get Addicted To Excedrin

Excedrin Overdose Risk No : Rebound Headache

Can you overdose on Excedrin ? | Top Health FAQ Channel

When you overdo it on headache remedies for a prolonged period of time, you can develop medication-overuse or rebound headaches, Grosberg says. “Most people who use Excedrin take one or two tablets and then, if they need to re-dose later, they will take another one or two,” he says. “The concern is not so much this type of redosing on an as-needed basis as it is using this type of medicine in a regular fashion for an extended period of time.”

It’s hard to say how much Excedrin is too much for any individual, but talking to your doctor and paying attention to ingredients, quantities and dosing instructions can make sure you treat your headaches as safely as possible.

Advice On The Proper Use Of Migraine Medications Straight From A Headache Specialist

Rebound headache, also known as medication overuse headache, can be caused by many acute migraine medications when taken too often, but too often has different definitions depending on the type of medication in use. This has left many people living with migraine concerned about their current dosage. In order to shed light on what can contribute to the development of rebound headache, Dr. Thomas Berk, Clinical Assistant Professor at the NYU Langone Health Center Department of Neurology, answered patient questions on the topic during a recent Facebook Live chat hosted by the American Migraine Foundation.

There are a number of medications that can cause rebound headache, and some cause it more frequently than others, said Dr. Berk. Years of research on migraine progression has taught us that the possible effects vary quite widely across the board.

What Happens With Migraine And Cluster Headaches

Migraine causes a severe, throbbing headache that can last several hours or even days. Its typically accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. Some people also have a sensory aura before or during the headache.

Cluster headaches are intense headaches that come on suddenly. They last for about an hour and occur several times a day. The pain typically starts around the eye and spreads over one side of the head. Cluster headaches happen over a few days, weeks or months, and are usually followed by periods without headaches.

Migraine and cluster headaches are more than just severe headaches. They are neurological conditions that affect certain blood vessels and nerves in the brain. Its not fully understood what causes them. However, with both conditions, headaches happen due to widening or swelling of blood vessels in the brain.

Aspirin is also a blood thinner, the NLM points out, which is why some people take low-dose aspirin daily to lower their risk for a heart attack. It prevents sticky platelets from clumping together in your blood and forming a clot that can block blood flow, causing a heart attack.

That said, aspirin can upset your stomach, cause damage to the lining of the stomach or cause gastrointestinal bleeding, says NLM. Your best bet is to discuss the risks and benefits of aspirin use with your doctor.

Medication Then Medication Overuse Headache: A Vicious Cycle

Pain relieving or antimigraine medications may stop headache attack when taken as needed to relieve headache. But if a person with a primary headache disorder, such as migraine or tension-type headache, takes these headache-relieving medications more than two to three days a week, they may trigger medication overuse headache.

A variety of medications can lead to rebound headaches. For example, people with migraine who take over-the-counter pain-relieving medications such as acetaminophen , ibuprofen , or naproxen on more than 15 days per month are at risk for medication overuse headache. So are people who take combination medications such as Excedrin, which contains caffeine, aspirin, and acetaminophen people who take combination medications that contain the barbiturate butalbital and those who take triptans, including sumatriptan , ergots, or opioids, if they take these medications on more than 10 days per month. In fact, butalbital-containing medications and opioids have been shown to increase the risk of a persons migraine progressing from episodic to chronic .

Interestingly, the same pain-relieving medications taken for other conditions such as back pain, neck pain, or arthritis usually do not trigger medication overuse headache in people without a pre-existing primary headache disorder.

How To Help Someone Who Is Addicted To Marijuana

Either a person who is abusing marijuana is able to quit smoking or they cant. If they can, then helping them becomes mostly a matter of finding alternative solutions to the problems that the marijuana use seemed to solve for them. This may include helping them set meaningful goals for themselves and encouraging them on their way to the accomplishment of those goals.

For a person to start using a drug like marijuana, there had to be some problems in life that marijuana seemed to help with. Social shyness? School problems? Abuse? Difficulty holding a job? Difficulty learning? Or simply boredom? If you can find out what problems seemed to go away when the drug was used, then you may be able to support the person as they learn the skills they need to overcome that problem. Isolating the problem through can go a long way to reducing the pain associated with it. Knowing ones friends or family supports you as you learn to these difficulties can go make one feel less isolated.

Signs You Might Have A Weed Addiction

Just like with any other sort of addiction, there are two main factors that indicate a problem may be at hand.

  • You Cannot Go Without It
  • You Use Excessively Despite Consequences
  • For most people, especially those who do not struggle with addictive patterns, the occasional or even moderate daily use of marijuana does not in any way, hinder their lives. This is the same with normal alcohol drinkers.

However, and this also goes for alcoholics, when the behavioral pattern of use begins to affect or create negative consequences in a persons life, and they still choose to participate in the behavior, it could be the beginnings of an addiction.

So with weed, while there have never been any overdoses, severe medical disorders, or apparent physical or emotional disturbances recorded from using it, it can still have a negative impact on someones life when they become addicted to it. For example:

    • Hindering Ones Ability to Move Forward in Life: We all know that weed is relaxing and euphoric, hence why most people use it. However, the danger with this comes when a person chooses to get high more than they choose to live their life. For example, when it interferes with someones education, or their career, or even their relationships with friends and loved ones.
    • Getting High Despite Consequences: If a person gets a DUI, or flunks out of school, or gets jumped, etc., and still continues to actively and aggressively seek out weed to smoke, this could be a sign of addiction.

    Imitrex And Other Medications

Below are lists of medications that can interact with Imitrex. These lists dont contain all drugs that may interact with Imitrex.

Before taking Imitrex, talk with your doctor and pharmacist. Tell them about all prescription, over-the-counter, and other drugs you take. Also tell them about any vitamins, herbs, and supplements you use. Sharing this information can help you avoid potential interactions.

If you have questions about drug interactions that may affect you, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Imitrex and other triptan medications for migraine

Imitrex is a type of medication called a triptan. You shouldnt take Imitrex with other triptan medications.

Triptans relieve migraine by narrowing blood vessels in your brain. However, triptans can also narrow blood vessels in other parts of your body.

Taking Imitrex with other triptan medications can cause your blood vessels to narrow too much. This could raise your risk for getting serious side effects, such as heart attack, stroke, or very high blood pressure. It could also raise your risk for other triptan-related side effects, such as serotonin syndrome . For more information about side effects, see the Imitrex side effects section above.

Examples of other triptans that shouldnt be taken with Imitrex include:

    • almotriptan
    • sumatriptan/naproxen sodium
    • zolmitriptan

You also shouldnt take Imitrex if youve taken one of these drugs to treat migraine in the last 24 hours.

Can You Take Excedrin Migraine While Pregnant

â¡ 10 Hacks That Can Help You Skip Coffee In The Morning ...

No. I did for probably the first 10-12 weeks of this pregnancy, and while I dont think it did any damage, apparently it can cause miscarriages, so I would advise against it. Since Excedrin Migraine contains aspirin and aspirin is a blood thinner, you shouldnt take it. Im considering myself lucky for taking it that long and not suffering any consequences.

You can ask your doctor about this, but thats what I did. I see like 10 different OBs, and they very rarely give me the same answer to a question . This is why I ended up taking Excedrin way longer than I should have while pregnant.

One doctor thought that because it was acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine, it was fine, because they commonly put pregnant women with high blood pressure on aspirin, anyway. However, after taking it those 10-12 weeks, I went back and saw another doctor.

They do prescribe aspirin for that reason, but its at a much lower dosage than the amount thats in Excedrin Migraine. There is way too much aspirin in Excedrin Migraine for pregnant women. The first doctor failed to mention that.

Headaches in pregnancy are common, and if you have migraines already, it can either make them better or worse. For me, it got worse. I was always taking Excedrin, and it wasnt even working. In the first 18 weeks of my pregnancy, I stayed home from work three times because of migraines. They were so bad that they were causing me to throw up.
