Studies also show that there are genes that put people at a higher-than-average risk of developing any type of addiction. The more addictive genes a person has, the more likely they are to struggle with addiction to food, another substance or a behavior.

How To Get Help For Addictive Eating

Willpower alone is rarely a strong enough defense against food addiction and the vicious cycle of cravings, overindulging and guilt it creates. In fact, trying to fight your cravings can even intensify them.

Researchers at Yale University’s Rudd Center for Food Science & Policy have developed a questionnaire to identify people with food addictions.

Here’s a sample of questions that can help determine if you have a food addiction. Do these actions apply to you? Do you:

  • End up eating more than planned when you start eating certain foods
  • Keep eating certain foods even if you’re no longer hungry
  • Eat to the point of feeling ill
  • Worry about not eating certain types of foods or worry about cutting down on certain types of foods
  • When certain foods aren’t available, go out of your way to obtain them

The questionnaire also asks about the impact of your relationship with food on your personal life. Ask yourself if these situations apply to you:

  • You eat certain foods so often or in such large amounts that you start eating food instead of working, spending time with the family, or doing recreational activities.
  • You avoid professional or social situations where certain foods are available because of fear of overeating.
  • You have problems functioning effectively at your job or school because of food and eating.

The questionnaire asks about psychological withdrawal symptoms. For example, when you cut down on certain foods , do you have symptoms such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Other physical symptoms

The questionnaire also tries to gauge the impact of food decisions on your emotions. Do these situations apply to you?

  • Do you continue eating unhealthy foods despite growing negative physical and emotion consequences ?
  • Do you hide you consumption of unhealthy foods from others?
  • Do you frequently experience cravings for certain foods, even if you are full?
  • Do your eating habits cause you significant distress and interfere with your ability to function in work, school, or at home?
  • Do you feel agitated or anxious when you dont have certain foods available to you throughout the day?
  • If you answer a resounding yes to more than half of these questions you probably struggle with an addiction to food.

    Not surprisingly, those in addiction recovery are more susceptible to becoming addicted to food. Replacing one addiction with another is not uncommon, and those formerly suffering from drug addiction may find they begin to use foods addictively.

    How Food Addiction Is Treated

    Although food addiction, as exemplified by conditions such as binge eating syndrome and compulsive eating, does share many similarities with other kinds of addictions, it has one characteristic that makes it unique: human beings cannot live without food. We can live without drugs, alcohol, gambling, sex, and so many other things stop eating and you will die of starvation. Therefore, abstinence is not a cure.

    The goal of food addiction treatment is to identify what causes compulsive thoughts and behaviours so that these can be managed. Some of the more common triggers of food addiction are:

    • underlying emotional stress
    • more and stronger cravings for food
    • a need for comfort that only food can provide
    • an inability to say no to food when entertaining or being entertained.

    Treatment tends to focus on counselling therapies and individual strategy building sessions. Patients will be counselled about the underlying emotional and physical issues that trigger addictive behaviour they will work with their therapists to develop effective strategies to prevent future overeating.

    Cravings Can Sometimes Turn Into Binges

    When acting on cravings, the brain gets a reward a feeling of pleasure associated with the release of dopamine. The reward is what cravings and food addiction are all about.

    People with food addiction get their fix by eating a particular food until their brain has received all of the dopamine it was missing.

    The more often this cycle of craving and rewarding is repeated, the stronger it becomes and the greater the quantity of food thats needed each time .

    While four scoops of ice cream were enough 3 years ago, today it may take eight scoops to experience the same level of reward.

    It can be almost impossible to eat in moderation when satisfying an addiction-driven craving.

    Thats why its often impossible for people to just have a small slice of cake or a few M& Ms. Its like telling a smoker to only smoke one-fourth of a cigarette to cut back. It simply does not work.

    Dopamine: Why We Like It And How It Hooks Us

    Dopamine release happens in the nucleus accumbens, a brain region famous for its role in registering pleasure and reinforcing learning.5

    Lots of things give you little dopamine boosts eating a tasty meal when youre hungry, connecting with friends and loved ones, and achieving goals. However, certain activities and substanceslike drugs, gambling, and highly-processed foodscan produce unnaturally high surges of dopamine.

    Heres why that can become a problem:

    The greater the dopamine response, the more pleasure you experience. The more pleasure you feel, the more motivated you are to repeat it.

    When you experience a dopamine surge, you learn to associate pleasure with the specific activity or substance that caused it.

    As that learning continues, your prefrontal cortex and your reward system get hijacked. You become focused on getting more of the thing. And you have trouble experiencing pleasure from anything else.

    Over time, your brain adapts to these floods of dopamine.

    Studies suggest that there is a solid link between food addiction and negative emotional states, including depression and anxiety. For example, adults and adolescents with binge eating disorder or bulimia nervosa have shown a higher prevalence of major depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, and substance abuse than individuals without an eating disorder. Obese individuals also have higher rates of major depression.5

    Perhaps most alarming is the connection between suicidal ideation and binge eating. More than half of teenage bulimics and a third of those with binge eating disorder report suicidal ideation. 5 This suggests that binge eating, as people often do when they are addicted to food, may be related to extreme emotional distress.
