Who Is At Risk For Substance Use Disorder

Find Drug Detox Centers Based On Your Needs

Anyone can develop a substance use disorder. No one thing can predict whether a person may develop an addiction. You may be more prone to drug use due to:

  • Biology: The persons genetic makeup, gender, ethnicity and mental health issues may raise his or her risk for developing an addiction. About two-thirds of people in addiction treatment are men. Particular ethnicities are at higher risk for substance use disorder. This is true for Native Americans.
  • Environment: Surroundings can affect the likelihood of developing substance use disorder. For example, stress, peer pressure, physical or sexual abuse and early exposure to drugs can raise the risk.
  • Age: Teenagers who start taking drugs are especially at risk. The parts of the brain that control judgment, decisions and self-control are not fully developed. Teens are more likely to engage in risky behaviors. In a developing brain, drugs can cause changes that make addiction more likely.

An Evolution And Spreading The Ethos

Over the years, the patients using the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic shifted from young, idealistic hippies, to people who were caught up with serious drug use, and in the 1970s, many were Vietnam veterans who returned home with an addiction to heroin. As the clinic treated more veterans, they were finally able to get government funding.

The small office at 558 Clayton St. helped launch the free clinic movement, which has expanded to over 1,200 clinics around the country, all built upon Smiths principle of health care as a right, not a privilege. Another lasting legacy is the treatment of addiction as a medical disease and a public health issue, rather than a criminal activity.

The clinic continues to operate today, now part of a larger organization called HealthRIGHT 360. UCSF remains involved, sending medical students and residents every year. We became a part of the DNA of San Francisco, said Smith. In many ways, he says, nonjudgmental health care, a radical idea championed by young people 50 years ago, has now become coded into the mainstream at UCSF but still has far to go in broader society.

Who Qualifies For Free Drug Rehab

Medication-Assisted Treatment Overview: Naltrexone, Methadone & Suboxone l The Partnership

As discussed in part above, many of these rehab center options require that clients apply and be accepted to the programs based on certain qualifications. For free rehab, the main qualifying factor is usually a demonstrated inability to pay. Other qualifications may include residence in the state where treatment is provided, certain social qualifiers, such as being pregnant or a veteran, or being a member of the faith community that runs a faith-based rehab.

There are priority populations in many state rehab centers. For example, through the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, it is clearly stated that those who are considered to be priorities for state-funded treatment are:

  • Pregnant women addicted to IV drugs.
  • Pregnant women with addictions in general.
  • Anyone else addicted to IV drugs.
  • Women with addictions within one year after giving birth.

People in one or more of these categories will be the most likely to receive state-funded treatment services in the state of Washington.

If a person has insurance coverage, or demonstrates an ability to pay at least part of their treatment cost, free treatment programs may not be available to that person. If thats the case, there are other ways to help cover the cost of rehab, even at private inpatient treatment centers.

Don’t Miss: What Is The Path To Addiction

The Relationship Between Addiction And Mental Illness

There is correlation. A recent Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration study demonstrated that those who struggled with mental health issues abused drugs and/or alcohol at more than double the rate of the general public.

People who suffer with mental illness may attempt to self-medicate their symptoms with drugs and/or alcohol. When the high wears off, however, the symptoms of their mental issues return, amplified, more pronounced than they were before.

People with an addiction arent thinking clearly. There are chemical changes going on in the brain that cause cravings for the substance to intensify. And with every use it gets harder and harder to stop. Brain imaging has shown these brain changes, and how they impair judgment, decision making, memory and behavior.

Here is what is known:

  • Common risk factors can contribute to both mental illness and substance use and addiction.
  • Mental illness may contribute to substance use and addiction.
  • Substance use and addiction can contribute to the development of mental illness.

Can I Prevent Substance Use Disorder

    • Follow instructions for prescription medications. Don’t ever take more than instructed. Opioid addiction, for instance, can start after just five days.
    • Dispose of unused prescriptions promptly to reduce risks of misuse by others.
