How To Get Over Gaming Addiction

Why Do People Fail When They Try To Quit Video Games

How to Overcome a Gaming Addiction

What happens if you try to quit video games? You can maybe take a day or two of no gaming. However, eventually, you want to get back to playing again. That is because video games change your brain in a few fundamental ways. It is crucial to understand how video games affect your brain if you want to control your gaming habit.

It Starts By Getting Clear What You Do Want

Get out a piece of paper and write down why youre trying to decrease your gaming time .

And add a few of the solutions you want to try.

This will help reduce your urge to game by reminding you why youre trying to kick your habit in the first place. Keep it on hand to look at whenever you feel doubts.

You should also take this time to set other goals in your life. Cutting back or quitting games is a lot easier if you choose something more positive to focus on.

Rise Of Esports And Online Gaming

Esports and online gaming are extremely popular. Especially with the significant development of smartphone technology, online gaming platforms have been on the rise and esports have become a $138 billion industry .

There are numerous national and international events held as esports with thousands of participants. Some esports players have millions of worldwide followers. While many people enjoy playing instead of watching, individuals aged 18-25 spend more time watching other gamers play than they spend watching traditional sports on TV.

There are a few people that actually support themselves through these platforms and earn a lot of money by playing esports and other online games. But normally, it is highly unlikely that everyone can achieve this much success.

However, many people consider esports an easy way to make money and hence spend hours trying to achieve this, eventually developing an internet gaming disorder.

Some games have been so popular that certain governments started to build gaming pads in libraries. With this provision of easy access, online gaming addiction is becoming more and more common.

How Can I Reduce The Amount Of Time My Kid Spends Playing Video Games

Parents often express concern that their children wont quit gaming. Parents who want to curb excessive gaming can set limits on their childs time that emphasize the balance of activities like sleep and schoolwork. Parents can ask children to silence notifications about their games so there are fewer temptations. It can also be valuable to try playing with a child to better understand their interest and to provide positive reinforcement when children do something right, because praise sometimes changes behavior when reproach does not. Helping children develop skills to navigate stress, social situations, and other challenges is also important.

Video Games Can Do A Lot Of Good Too

Part of the concern here is that stifling video games could substantively harm people. Games are now used in education all the time. Some places, like Radboud Universitys Games for Emotional and Mental Health Lab in the Netherlands, are now studying the use of video games for therapy. Theres even some early research into prescription video games, trying to see how games especially with the advent of virtual reality could be used to help treat mental health conditions.

But beyond a medical setting, video games entertain people. They can let people relax after a hard day. They can provide an escape. All of these are real benefits that help people on a daily basis.

With the news of the WHOs designation earlier this year, I began to think about my own gaming, particularly back when I was in high school. I spent a lot of time playing World of Warcraft 40 hours a week, if not more.

I did not have the problems that Scott did. I got mostly As in high school, went to college and studied journalism, went to parties, hung out with friends on weekends, and spent time with my family.

In fact, looking back, I still think World of Warcraft was good for me. As a closeted gay teen, it was the one space where I found a group of friends I could be totally open with. I came out to them long before I came out to anyone I knew in my real life. Having a safe space online made my early gay life a lot more bearable.

In all of the observed groups of people addicted to gaming, a number of the smaller areas of the brain prefrontal cortex, cerebellum, and the parts that control motor skills were smaller than those in healthy subjects. These differences reached upwards of 10-20%.

To make matters worse, the study showed that online players demonstrated a reduction of brain tissue. Researchers noted that reduced functionality by these areas of the brain can have severe consequences for online gamers including lack of self-control, decreased short-term memory, difficulties when making decisions, and limited control of behavior-oriented goals.

Leverage Tools To Manage Game Time

Another thing you can do to help an addicted kid is to leverage tools such as Kitchen timer and other third-party tools.

Tools can be handy when you want to properly track their time. You can also install a timer on your teens computer so their computer turns off automatically after 1 hour or as specified.

You can also play video games with your kids. That way youll be able to track their time more efficiently. After all, youre not addicted to gaming, so your head is intact.

Essentially, you can limit your teen from playing certain immersive games. World of Warcraft is a good example of an immersive game.

What Causes An Addiction To Video Games

Many different causes factor into video game addiction. One of the main reasons that video games can become so addictive, however, is they are designed to be that way. Video game designers, like anyone else trying to make a profit, are always looking for ways to get more people playing their games. They accomplish this by making a game just challenging enough to keep you coming back for more but not so hard that the player eventually gives up. In other words, success for a gamer often feels just out of reach. In this respect, video game addiction is very similar to another more widely recognized disorder: gambling addiction.

Gaming Disorder: Why Video Games Can Be Addictive

Even without an officially diagnosed disorder, some people sacrifice their jobs and marriages to spend 60 hours every week playing on the computer. Some children and teenagers become so attached to video games that they threaten their parents when theyre told to put down the controller.

Many people have read about such cases or have had experiences which show that video games have addictive power. While anecdotal evidence is not scientific research, real-world experience and the growing awareness of other behavioral addictions explain why the concept of video game addiction is becoming increasingly accepted. Recently, the World Health Organization added gaming disorder to its official list of diseases.

Gaming disorder is defined as a pattern of gaming behavior characterized by impaired control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming over other activities to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other interests and daily activities, and continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences.

Debates On The Classification

A meta-analytic review of pathological gaming studies concluded that about 3% of gamers may experience some symptoms of pathological gaming. The report noted problems in the field with defining and measuring pathological gaming and concluded that pathological gaming behaviors were more likely the product of underlying mental health problems rather than the inverse.

Barnett and Coulson expressed concern that much of the debate on the issue of addiction may be a knee jerk response stimulated by poor understanding of games and game players. Such issues may lead both society and scholars to exaggerate the prevalence and nature of problematic gaming, and over-focus on games specifically, while ignoring underlying mental health issues.

Other scholars have cautioned that comparing the symptoms of problematic gaming with problematic gambling is flawed, and that such comparisons may introduce research artifacts and artificially inflate prevalence estimates. For instance, Richard Wood has observed that behaviors which are problematic in regards to gambling may not be as problematic when put into the context of other behaviors that are rewarding such as gaming. Similarly, Barnett and Coulson have cautioned that discussions of problematic gaming have moved forward prematurely without proper understanding of the symptoms, proper assessment and consequences.

Video Games Are Now Mainstream And That Comes With Some Risks

It was only a few decades ago when video games were seen as a niche activity. When I was in high school, gamers were nerds.

Thats now changed. With the rise of phenomenon like Pokémon, World of Warcraft, , and Fortnite, games are now mainstream. According to Statista, the number of active gamers worldwide will rise to more than 2.7 billion people in 2021, up from 1.8 billion in 2014 and 2.3 billion in 2018.

The great majority of these people will not become addicted to video games. Based on some of the bestresearch, 1 to 3 percent of gamers are at risk.

This is true for other kinds of addiction, even for drugs that are considered highly addictive. For example, some research estimates that about 8 percent of opioid painkiller patients get addicted still a significant amount, but definitely not a majority.

But when billions of people around the world are playing games, even a small percent can lead to a large population literally tens of millions with problems.

The WHOs designation is meant to get ahead of this problem. It creates a basis that the health care system can build a response around. Doctors will have a condition to diagnose patients with. It enables more research into the disorder. And health insurers will be pushed to pay for treatment as its recognized as a real medical condition.

Joël Billieux, a University of Luxembourg professor involved in clinical and research work on gaming disorder, argued thats why the WHO designation is necessary.
