Chapter 5specialized Substance Abuse Treatment Programs
Primary care clinicians need to be familiar with available treatment resources for theirpatients who have diagnosed substance abuse or dependence disorders. The clinician’sresponsibility to the patient does not end with the patient’s entry into formaltreatment rather, the physician may become a collaborative part of the treatment team,or, minimally, continue to treat the patient’s medical conditions during the specializedtreatment, encourage continuing participation in the program, and schedule followupvisits after treatment termination to monitor progress and help prevent relapse.

Enablers And The Road To Recovery
As a parent or a friend, you must be careful of the help you bring to the addicted person. Enabling will block the road to recovery. It can be very disheartening. When someone cant buy groceries because of alcohol or drug use, we give them money to buy food. Unfortunately, the money buys more drugs. The situation worsens if you continue to bring solutions to their problems.
The correct action is always to get the person the needed help, rehabilitation. To know more about the subject, you can read this article. Also, in Aurora, you can find good support and advice from our referral counsellors. They work with families and can help yours.

What Is Addiction Treatment
There are many aspects of drug and alcohol addiction treatment, including medical care, counseling and education, and therapy, especially behavioral treatment modalities.
A medical team may prescribe medication to stabilize your brain chemistry, help alleviate withdrawal symptoms, and reduce cravings.1 The type of medication differs depending on the substance used. For example, opioid addiction treatment involves specific types of medications .
During addiction treatment, the medical team often also addresses any underlying mental health issues. Many people with addiction have co-occurring disorders. A co-occurring disorder can be any diagnosis you have in addition to a substance use disorder, such as a mental health condition like an anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, or another mood disorder.1 In some cases, other mental health conditions predate the substance use disorder. 2 Substance use can develop as a response to mental health symptoms.1
The active phase of addiction treatment begins after a person goes through the initial detoxification stage. Active treatment involves altering thought patterns by employing new behavioral strategies and coping mechanisms. Treatment facilitates, counselors, and therapists can assist with developing new methods of dealing with cravings, stressors including anxiety and other mental health symptoms, and personal conflict.1

Inpatient Rehab & Residential Treatment For Drug And Alcohol Addiction
Residential treatment, sometimes known as inpatient treatment, is what comes to mind when most people picture rehab. Patients stay at our treatment center and are fully immersed in our addiction recovery programs which include group counseling, individual therapy and support meetings.
Residential treatment puts you in a safe, controlled setting where you can focus on getting better and avoid the distractions and temptations that may exist in your normal home environment. We provide you with comfortable sleeping quarters, three meals a day and a staff dedicated to helping you recover from an addiction. Before enrolling in our inpatient treatment, you may be asked to undergo medical detox, during which they withdraw from their substance, occasionally through the use of supplemental medications that ease withdrawal symptoms.
Addressing All Risks Co
A key component of creating purpose is ensuring your mental health status is stable. A person who enters addiction rehab may not only be battling the chemical dependency and addiction, but also underlying mental health disorders. This is called co-occurring disorders or having a dual diagnosis. It is very often missed by traditional doctors because the symptoms can be very similar to addiction.
However, its not uncommon. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reports 7.9 million people in the United States have a substance use disorder and a mental health disorder at the same time.
If both issues do not receive treatment, its impossible to find happiness and purpose in day-to-day life during recovery. For example, if you are suffering from depression thats untreated, its hard to find the energy to get up each day to care for your pet.

What Happens During Residential Treatment
Our residential treatment program is centered around teaching you skills related to continued sobriety, with therapy sessions designed to explore the underlying triggers of substance abuse, and support groups designed to help recovering addicts share their story in a safe, private environment. Here you can build a network of support and skills that can last well beyond our doors.
Our inpatient treatment is carefully structured so that you have a balance of structure and free time. Not all residential treatment centers operate the same way, but many offer some form of both group and individual therapy sessions. You will be assigned to therapists and counselors in either group blocks or assigned to meet with an individual clinician weekly.
Directories Of Local Substance Abuse Treatmentsystems
The first step in understanding local resources is to collect information about thespecialized drug and alcohol treatment currently available in the community. In mostcommunities, a public or private agency regularly compiles a directory of substanceabuse treatment facilities that provides useful information about program services, eligibility criteria, cost, and staff complement and qualifications, includinglanguage proficiency. This directory may be produced by the local health department,a council on alcoholism and drug abuse, a social services organization, or volunteersin recovery. Additionally, every State has a single State-level alcohol and otherdrug authority that usually has the licensing and program review authority for alltreatment programs in the State and often publishes a statewide directory of allalcohol and drug treatment programs licensed in the State. Another resource is theNational Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence, which provides both assessment orreferral for a sliding scale fee and distributes free information on treatmentfacilities nationally. Also, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health ServicesAdministration distributes a National Directory of Drug Abuse and AlcoholismTreatment and Prevention Programs .

What Is Group Therapy
Group therapy allows patients to discuss their problems with substance use under the supervision of a therapist. Our group therapy program is designed to show you that youre not alone, help you find your voice and provide you with a supportive safety net. Patients will convene in a group setting with one or more therapists/counselors to learn about the recovery process. Topics can range from 12-Step, SMART Recovery, and Seeking Safety to broader topics such as family dynamics, the disease of addiction, and skills for fighting cravings. Group therapy may sound like the last place you want to deal with your personal issues, but the truth is that many patients share similar stories and points of view.
At Landmark Recovery, patients receive at least 21 hours of group therapy per week. Group therapy helps foster openness and honesty and is a great chance to offer support to fellow patients in recovery. It may be difficult at first, but sharing stories can help build camaraderie, relieve burdens, and allow for emotional healing. Many friendships forged in group therapy can last well into recovery at our residential treatment centers.

What Are The Challenges Of Addiction Treatment
Each stage of alcohol and drug addiction treatment has unique obstacles that can challenge your addiction treatment goals.
During detox, you may struggle with cravings and withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms usually decrease in intensity after detox is complete and you may go longer periods without feeling them.6 But as you work through the process of repair damage caused by your addiction, you may begin confronting underlying emotions like anxiety or grief that can trigger a psychological rather than physical desire to use substances.
After leaving treatment, you may encounter challenges that have the potential to lead to relapse. Factors that can increase the risk of relapsing include: 5
- Having a social circle of individuals who use substances or are not supportive of your recovery
- Living in an environment that does not facilitate recovery-focused goals
- Not having access to services you need for recovery support due to finances, insurance coverage, or lack of local resources
- Encountering intense stressors that you do not yet have the coping skills to work through without external support
You may choose to move, change jobs, set boundaries in your relationships, or make other changes to limit your exposure to certain triggers.
Having Purpose In The Face Of Addiction Can Be Empowering
Many people entering drug and alcohol addiction treatment feel defeated, worthless, and expendable. That feeling may be due to a combination of factors, but the negative thought pattern can leave a person unable to stop the pattern of abuse. Changing that around and creating purpose, on the other hand, gives you a sense of fight thats far more powerful than drugs or alcohol, with the right level of treatment and support.
