What Are Treatments For Drug Addiction

There are many options that have been successful in treating drug addiction, including:

  • behavioral counseling
  • medical devices and applications used to treat withdrawal symptoms or deliver skills training
  • evaluation and treatment for co-occurring mental health issues such as depression and anxiety
  • long-term follow-up to prevent relapse

A range of care with a tailored treatment program and follow-up options can be crucial to success. Treatment should include both medical and mental health services as needed. Follow-up care may include community- or family-based recovery support systems.

What Is Drug Addiction

Drug addiction is a chronic disease characterized by compulsive, or uncontrollable, drug seeking and use despite harmful consequences and changes in the brain, which can be long-lasting. These changes in the brain can lead to the harmful behaviors seen in people who use drugs. Drug addiction is also a relapsing disease. Relapse is the return to drug use after an attempt to stop.

The path to drug addiction begins with the voluntary act of taking drugs. But over time, a person’s ability to choose not to do so becomes compromised. Seeking and taking the drug becomes compulsive. This is mostly due to the effects of long-term drug exposure on brain function. Addiction affects parts of the brain involved in reward and motivation, learning and memory, and control over behavior.

Addiction is a disease that affects both the brain and behavior.

Virtual Service And Supports

Virtual service and supports are considered any access to health care, harm reduction, disorder management or treatment provided through technology, such as telemedicine, video conferencing or apps.

In many areas of Canada, COVID-19 safety restrictions increased the virtual services available to people using substances to compensate for a decrease in face-to-face or in-person services. These VSS will likely continue into the future.

The Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction has been researching the impact of these services and supports, and developing policy, practitioner and technological recommendations to best meet client needs.

Principles Of Effective Treatment

Based on scientific research since the mid-1970s, the following key principles should form the basis of any effective treatment program:

  • Addiction is a complex but treatable disease that affects brain function and behavior.
  • No single treatment is right for everyone.
  • People need to have quick access to treatment.
  • Effective treatment addresses all of the patients needs, not just his or her drug use.
  • Staying in treatment long enough is critical.
  • Counseling and other behavioral therapies are the most commonly used forms of treatment.
  • Medications are often an important part of treatment, especially when combined with behavioral therapies.
  • Treatment plans must be reviewed often and modified to fit the patients changing needs.
  • Treatment should address other possible mental disorders.
  • Medically assisted detoxification is only the first stage of treatment.
  • Treatment doesn’t need to be voluntary to be effective.
  • Drug use during treatment must be monitored continuously.
  • Treatment programs should test patients for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis, and other infectious diseases as well as teach them about steps they can take to reduce their risk of these illnesses.

Research On Treatment Process Factors Related To Rehabilitation Outcome

Danny Winder Research Overview Addiction Research

Patient factors have been much more widely studied than treatment setting, modality, process, and service factors as predictors of outcome from addiction rehabilitation treatments. Perhaps the major reason for this is that while there have been many reliable and valid measures of various patient characteristics, there are still very few measures of treatment setting or treatment services .

There is good news however, regarding the study of treatment factors in the substance abuse field. Recent developments in the psychotherapy field have led to the creation of manual-based treatments and with them, appropriate measures of treatment fidelity and integrity. Following on this progress, the multisite NIAAA study of patient treatment matching has provided the field with new manuals for the three Project MATCH treatments as well as additional measures of the nature and fidelity of each treatment. These are likely to improve the study of addiction treatment process in the years to come. Below we review several dimensions or characteristics of treatment that have been studied and that have shown some relationship with outcome following treatment.

Can Drug Addiction Be Treated

How Are Medications And Devices Used In Drug Addiction Treatment

Medications and devices can be used to manage withdrawal symptoms, prevent relapse, and treat co-occurring conditions.

Withdrawal. Medications and devices can help suppress withdrawal symptoms during detoxification. Detoxification is not in itself “treatment,” but only the first step in the process. Patients who do not receive any further treatment after detoxification usually resume their drug use. One study of treatment facilities found that medications were used in almost 80 percent of detoxifications . In November 2017, the Food and Drug Administration granted a new indication to an electronic stimulation device, NSS-2 Bridge, for use in helping reduce opioid withdrawal symptoms. This device is placed behind the ear and sends electrical pulses to stimulate certain brain nerves. Also, in May 2018, the FDA approved lofexidine, a non-opioid medicine designed to reduce opioid withdrawal symptoms.

Relapse prevention. Patients can use medications to help re-establish normal brain function and decrease cravings. Medications are available for treatment of opioid , tobacco , and alcohol addiction. Scientists are developing other medications to treat stimulant and cannabis addiction. People who use more than one drug, which is very common, need treatment for all of the substances they use.

  • Co-occuring conditions: Other medications are available to treat possible mental health conditions, such as depression or anxiety, that may be contributing to the persons addiction.

    Moving Toward A Recovery

The journey towards sustainable recovery from substance use and addiction is a personalized one. Individuals can use personal, social and community resources as significant supports for long-term recovery. In addition, the results of the Life in Recovery survey suggest that many different service providers play a role in improving the lives of individuals and their families. The report based on the survey reiterated the idea that collaboration across sectors and with community-based services is key.

To build on that work and support the movement toward a recovery-oriented system of care, CCSA collaborated with the National Recovery Advisory Committee to develop a resource for service providers and decision makers. It highlights:

    • The value of adopting a recovery-oriented approach across the continuum of care
    • Information about Canadas collective vision
    • Six guiding principles for recovery and
    • Examples of policies and practices that can be implemented to support each recovery principle.
