Finding Strength In The Lord
The Churchs Addiction Recovery Program is about supporting and connecting with each other in overcoming addiction, but its also about connecting with the Savior Jesus Christ. He is the source of healing.
The Savior is keenly aware of all of our trials and struggles, said Erwin. When we gather to support each other in overcoming this challenge through Him, my experience is that He is there with us.

Its normal to feel alone and ashamed when struggling with addiction or other challenges, but meeting with others in similar situations can help you feel connected, hopeful, and motivated.

Scott Keate, product manager for the new site, said that he hopes people struggling with addictive behavior at anylevel will consider the resources available through arp.ChurchofJesusChrist.org.
There is this misconception that you have to have a really serious addiction to participate in the Addiction Recovery Program, he said. But members are finding support through all sorts of different types of addictions and other problems by participating in the Addiction Recovery Program.
Brother Erwin added that he hopes that those who have experienced recovery firsthand will also use the website to help support individuals now seeking their own recovery. While LDS Family Services will provide addiction-specific information, practical helps, and tips for how to respond to triggers, he said, one of the major strengths of the Addiction Recovery Program is the support offered by other people at a grassroots level.
This is an opportunity to give back, Brother Erwin said. Serving others working through the program can also help reinforce your own recovery.
Regardless of where people are in their fight against addiction, he said, there is hope in the Savior.

How To Find A Meeting
Every week, around 2,800 ARP meetings are held in 30 different countries and 17 different languages. If youâd like to find a meeting, visit addictionrecovery.ChurchofJesusChrist.org. These meetings happen in person and online. If there are no meetings in your area or if you feel more comfortable attending virtually, you can join an online or phone meeting. You can also ask your Church leaders if an in-person meeting can be arranged in your area.
At ARP groups, there is no pressure to participate more than you would like to. You can start by attending a meeting and simply observing, listening to others, and feeling the Spirit.

When Jeff , an addiction recovery facilitator, sits down with people struggling with addictions, he doesnt tell them what to do. Instead, he shares what has helped him to recover from his own debilitating addictions and to stay sober one day at a time.
Jeff is a volunteer in the addiction recovery program sponsored by LDS Family Services, a social service arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The program has been developed over the last decade to help those who suffer from the devastating effects of various addictions. The results have been impressive.
The idea for a Church-sponsored program was first suggested in the 70s and 80s when substance abuse began to make headlines. Individual Latter-day Saints, independent of each other, who had positive experiences with 12-step recovery meetings, began organizing Latter-day Saintoriented recovery groups. Reports of the groups successes began surfacing in the late 80s and early 90s as group facilitators asked local Church leaders for permission to hold meetings in Church buildings.
In 1993, some Latter-day Saint congregation leaders asked LDS Family Services to consolidate all the Church-related recovery programs under one umbrella with uniform protocols and guidelines.

We admitted we were powerless over alcoholâthat our lives had become unmanageable.
Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

The Lds Addiction Recovery Program
The LDS Addiction Recovery Program is a drug and alcohol addiction treatment program that features an LDS adaptation of the traditional 12-step recovery model that focuses on the Mormon understanding of Christs Atonement and the power of repentance. The program offers a faith-filled environment that allows time for members to figure out the root cause of their addictions and build their personal relationships with Jesus Christ.

The referral service is free of charge. If you have no insurance or are underinsured, we will refer you to your state office, which is responsible for state-funded treatment programs. Throughout the world, members of the Church and others have found hope and healing through the Addiction Recovery Program , sponsored by LDS Family Services. Now, with the advent of arp.lds.org, the 12-step programâs message of recovery through the Atonement of Jesus Christ is accessible to more people than ever before.
The initial release of the site in May in English includes information for people facing addictions, their loved ones, their leaders, and ARP volunteers. This structure is somewhat similar to that of the overcomingpornography.org website the Church released in April 2010.
The site solves what have been two major barriers to the program in the pastâawareness and availability, said Ben Erwin, LDS Family Services counseling program manager for the ARP. The siteâs presence on LDS.org will help more people be aware of the programâs existenceâand of its being a program sanctioned by the Churchâand it will help people who may not have had access to the program or program materials previously.

Karens struggle with addiction first began when she was working as a nurse and going to graduate school. I also had a miscarriage, and after the miscarriage, I was given a prescription for narcotic pain medication, and thats the first time I realized that these drugs helped me feel better in my mind as well as for pain.
Karen spiraled into addiction and began stealing narcotics from work. When she was caught and lost her job, Karen started her journey to recovery. During this journey, she attended ARP meetings.

Meetings Follow A Regular Format
Meetings begin with a reading of the ARP mission statement. Then, if the participants are comfortable doing so, they will introduce themselves. After that, all 12 steps of recovery outlined in the ARP study guide will be introduced. Next is the step study portion of the meeting, where the group will read through all the material for one step.
The group will then move to the sharing portion of the meeting. During the sharing portion, participants are invited to share their related personal experiences and how they have applied gospel principles to them. The facilitator will ask you to focus on solutions and to avoid graphic details.
Through sharing your personal experiences, others are assured that they are not alone.

- People whose commitments preclude them from attending meetings during standard times can find a meeting held during a time more conducive to their schedules .
- Someone who lives in a remote area or a region in which meetings are not yet being held can find meetings held via conference call. This could also be a good option for those who are not comfortable attending a face-to-face meeting.
All information about meetings entered into the tool is maintained locally by LDS Family Services Offices, program coordinators, or others associated with overseeing the meetingsnot centrally by Church headquarters in Salt Lake City. This is important because, since the program is priesthood-driven and meetings are organized under the direction of a stake or district president, those who have stewardship in particular regions can update the meetings instantly.
Because the program is administered locally, those who are unable to locate the program in their area can speak to their stake or district president and request that he consider hosting the program in their unit.
