Church Of Jesus Christ Addiction Recovery

Freedom In The Atonement

Step 2: Hope – Prestons Story about Drug Addiction Recovery

Brother Erwin defines addiction as a spiritual state where agency is restricted or lost. The 12 steps are simply the principles of the gospel applied to addictionwhich will help people regain their agency, he explained.

As folks who struggle with addiction go through this process, in essence they are following the Savior in His path and the power of the Atonement to have a rebirth and a cleansing, Brother Erwin said.

The greatest miracle is seeing people break out of the bonds of addiction, he said.

They can choose again, he said. To see that miracle of the cleansing and sanctifying power of the Atonement is miraculous.

Addiction Recovery Program Mission Statement:

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints addiction recovery meetings assist those who desire to recover from addiction. We also welcome family and friends whose lives may be affected by the addiction of another. We are a group of brothers and sisters who share our experience, faith, and hope as we study and apply the principles of the gospel as they correlate with the 12 steps of recovery. Our meetings provide a safe place for honest sharing because we adhere to the principles of confidentiality and anonymity, and we use appropriate language and behavior to invite the Spirit to be with us. As we practice these 12 steps in our lives, we receive power through the Atonement of Jesus Christ to overcome addiction and receive the full blessings of the gospel. Family and friends who practice these same 12 steps will also find hope and healing for themselves.

Benefits Of The Website

Scott Keate, product manager for the new site, said that he hopes people struggling with addictive behavior at anylevel will consider the resources available through arp.ChurchofJesusChrist.org.

There is this misconception that you have to have a really serious addiction to participate in the Addiction Recovery Program, he said. But members are finding support through all sorts of different types of addictions and other problems by participating in the Addiction Recovery Program.

Brother Erwin added that he hopes that those who have experienced recovery firsthand will also use the website to help support individuals now seeking their own recovery. While LDS Family Services will provide addiction-specific information, practical helps, and tips for how to respond to triggers, he said, one of the major strengths of the Addiction Recovery Program is the support offered by other people at a grassroots level.

This is an opportunity to give back, Brother Erwin said. Serving others working through the program can also help reinforce your own recovery.

Regardless of where people are in their fight against addiction, he said, there is hope in the Savior.

What are the 12 steps to recovery?

The Churchâs addiction recovery program is about supporting and connecting with each other in overcoming addiction, but most importantly itâs about connecting with the Savior.

We each struggle with our own personal challenges. For many, addictive or compulsive behaviors may be one of these trials. We donât always talk openly about addiction or compulsive behaviors in society and especially in the Church. If you or a loved one is struggling with addiction, you may feel shame or embarrassment or be worried about judgment from others.

If you are struggling with an addiction, you may feel that you are broken or a bad person. This challenge can feel overwhelming, embarrassing, or insurmountable. However, none of our actions can change our value in Godâs eyes. We are all of infinite worth. And you are not alone in your trials. All things, including recovery from addiction, are possible through Christ. This is also true for those who may struggle with the pain or consequences of the actions of another. President M. Russell Ballard has taught:

âFor those of you who have fallen prey to any kind of addiction, there is hope because God loves all of His children and because the Atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ makes all things possible.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Addiction Recovery Program helps those interested in working toward overcoming addiction or compulsive behavior have hope that recovery is possible, even during a pandemic.

On the other side of addiction, there is hope and healing and happiness, said Karen, an ARP participant who is recovering from a drug addiction. Im really grateful that I have had this experience because it has brought me this relationship with Jesus Christ that I never thought possible.

Karens struggle with addiction first began when she was working as a nurse and going to graduate school. I also had a miscarriage, and after the miscarriage, I was given a prescription for narcotic pain medication, and thats the first time I realized that these drugs helped me feel better in my mind as well as for pain.

Karen spiraled into addiction and began stealing narcotics from work. When she was caught and lost her job, Karen started her journey to recovery. During this journey, she attended ARP meetings.

A little over three years ago I had reached my bottom. I was alone. I was broken. My wife and four kids were leaving me. I thought Id lost all chance of happiness. I thought I had it figured outI thought I could live two lives. I thought I could lie my way into heaven. I was heavy into my methamphetamine addiction.

Three years ago Jared felt like he was too far into his addiction to find a way out. It wasnt until a close friend sat him down and asked what was wrong that he felt able to confide in another person for the first time.

That decision eventually brought him to the Churchs 12-step addiction recovery program , sponsored by LDS Family Services.

President Boyd K. Packer of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles has said, The study of the doctrines of the gospel will improve behavior quicker than talking about behavior will improve behavior .

It was a painful process, Jared said. But, he added, these steps have made my relationship with my Heavenly Father more beautiful than I could ever have imagined.

The Twelve Steps Of Alcoholics Anonymous

  • We admitted we were powerless over alcoholâthat our lives had become unmanageable.

  • Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

  • Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

  • Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

  • Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

  • Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

  • Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

  • Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

  • Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

  • Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

  • Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

  • Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

One of the main features of the initial version of the site is the meeting locator. This tool allows people to find meetings by location, by schedule, by group makeup or addiction, and by meeting type. For instance:

    • People whose jobs require travel can find a meeting in the locations theyre visiting for work.
    • People whose commitments preclude them from attending meetings during standard times can find a meeting held during a time more conducive to their schedules .
    • Someone who lives in a remote area or a region in which meetings are not yet being held can find meetings held via conference call. This could also be a good option for those who are not comfortable attending a face-to-face meeting.

All information about meetings entered into the tool is maintained locally by LDS Family Services Offices, program coordinators, or others associated with overseeing the meetingsnot centrally by Church headquarters in Salt Lake City. This is important because, since the program is priesthood-driven and meetings are organized under the direction of a stake or district president, those who have stewardship in particular regions can update the meetings instantly.

Because the program is administered locally, those who are unable to locate the program in their area can speak to their stake or district president and request that he consider hosting the program in their unit. Stake and district leaders who receive such requests then address the need with Area leadership.

    The Lds Addiction Recovery Program

The LDS Addiction Recovery Program is a drug and alcohol addiction treatment program that features an LDS adaptation of the traditional 12-step recovery model that focuses on the Mormon understanding of Christs Atonement and the power of repentance. The program offers a faith-filled environment that allows time for members to figure out the root cause of their addictions and build their personal relationships with Jesus Christ.

In addition to detox and individualized therapy, many ARP facilities include the following services:

    • Weekly church meetings
    • Daily meditation, prayer, and scripture study
    • Weekly LDS Family Services addiction recovery group meetings
    • Consultations with ecclesiastical leaders

The Church considers addiction to be a battle between good and evil. Substance abuse is a war waged in a persons mind and body, but it is also a weapon used by the devil to turn people against the word of God. Therefore, drugs and alcohol prevent a person from achieving their full, spiritual potential and allow the body to control the mind. The Church believes that the best recovery lifestyle includes detoxification from those substances, Atonement through Jesus Christ, and an all-encompassing dedication to lasting sobriety. The Church believes that with the proper Atonement through Jesus Christ and His gospel, anyone can be fully healed and recover from addiction.

Hope Of Recovery Is Found Through The Healing Powers Of The Great Physician

A person who is struggling with an addiction may at times feel that there is no hope for recovery. He or she may at times ask the same question that the prophet Jeremiah asked, Is there no balm in Gilead is there no physician there? Jeremiah 8:22. The answer is that Jesus Christ, the Great Physician, is that balm in Gilead. Elder Patrick Kearon of the Quorum of the Seventy has taught, We find healing and relief only when we bring ourselves to the feet of the great physician: our Savior, Jesus Christ.
