NAC helps your body create intracellular glutathione. Glutathione is our bodys antioxidant powerhouse. Antioxidants protect our cells from free radical damage. Free radicals As I explain in this article about vitamin C, our immune system creates free radicals to defend against viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens.

Withdrawal Syndrome And Depressive Symptoms

Depression is classically considered one of the many components of withdrawal syndrome . Thus, we conducted subgroup analysis of these two clinical features and examined their overall effects. We did not restrict the meta-analysis to trials with longer length of treatment or time of measurement for withdrawal and depression symptoms because these two features are clinical meaningful at the treatment initiation days or later. Five trials measured withdrawal symptoms. These trials evaluated withdrawal syndromes by using the ShiffmanJarvik Withdrawal Questionnaire and Minnesota Nicotine Withdrawal Scale at baseline and followed up at 62 hours and on the 4th day , 2nd week and 4th week . Four trials reported the endpoint scores while LaRowe et al. reported the change score. Meta-analysis of the four trials reported endpoint results found no significant differences between groups and no heterogeneity across trials . Merging the change score with the endpoint results did not reveal significance between groups and heterogeneity was observed across trials .

When withdrawal and depressive symptoms were considered as a single domain, the NAC treatment group demonstrated a significantly higher overall improvement than the placebo group no heterogeneity was observed across trials .

Nac Hangover Cure: Does N

N-acetylcysteine, or NAC for short, is a dietary supplement that is used to reduce hangover symptoms. It is a derivative of L-cysteine, a naturally occurring amino acid. According to WebMD NAC is an antioxidant that binds to acetaldehyde, a toxic byproduct of alcohol metabolism and one of the main hangover causes. In fact, acetaldehyde is the culprit behind many of the most dreaded symptoms following excessive drinking. By bringing down elevated levels of acetaldehyde, the supplement reduces the general misery a person experiences following alcohol ingestion.

NAC alcohol is a safe, inexpensive, and effective way to lessen unpleasant symptoms after alcohol intake. How does N-acetylcysteine hangover cure work and what are the possible side effects? Lets find out more about taking NAC for hangovers.

People with a hangover have all kinds of questions on their mind. Whats good to drink for a hangover? Are there foods that help with the uneasiness, and if so, whats good to eat when you have a hangover? Does NAC supplement work for alcohol withdrawal?

Reduces Respiratory Symptoms In Chronic Lung Disease

COPD is a common lung disease resulting from chronic airflow obstruction and inflammation. While it isnt a reversible disease, it is preventable and treatable. When administered orally at 1200-1800 mg/day, NAC decreased COPD exacerbations.

Oxidative stress and free radicals play a role in COPD, which makes anti-inflammatory substances and antioxidants a logical choice for helping to treat and manage the condition. NAC has been shown to reduce COPD and chronic bronchitis flares.

In a 2016 review in the Journal of Respiratory Medicine it was concluded that NAC either alone or with antibiotics can decrease the risk of increased symptoms or worsening of conditions such as COPD, chronic bronchitis, and rhinosinusitis.

As with most studies regarding NAC, there is a dose dependent effect. Or in other words, if you arent taking enough and doing it consistently then youre unlikely to see a benefit.

NAC is also a common prescription to be used with a nebulizer for those with COPD. This is because it also helps with the clearance of mucus from the lungs.

Boosts Brain Health By Regulating Glutamate And Replenishing Glutathione

NACs ability to replenish glutathione and regulate brain glutamate levels can boost brain health.

The neurotransmitter glutamate is involved in a broad range of learning, behavior, and memory functions, while the antioxidant glutathione helps reduce brain cell oxidative damage that is associated with aging .

Because NAC helps regulate glutamate levels and replenish glutathione, it may benefit those with health conditions affecting the brain and memory .

The neurological disorder Alzheimers disease slows down learning and memory capacity. Animal studies suggest that NAC may slow the loss of thinking ability in people with Alzheimers disease .

Another brain condition, Parkinsons disease, is characterized by the deterioration of cells that generate the neurotransmitter dopamine. Both oxidative damage to cells and a decrease in antioxidant ability contribute to this disease.

NAC supplements appear to improve both dopamine function and disease symptoms such as tremors (

While NAC may improve brain health, more human research is needed to make strong conclusions.

Hijacking The Brains Reward System

The neurotransmitter dopamine is the primary currency of the brains reward system. An action that elicits an increase in dopamine is experienced as pleasurable. The brain learns to associate that action with reward. The pleasurable experience of natural rewards such as food and sex are signaled through dopamine release in the reward system as a way to ensure continued pursuit of actions that enable survival.

Drugs of abuse, however, put the reward system into overdrive by eliciting unnaturally high increases in dopamine release. As a result, the brain overlearns the association between taking the drug and reward. As that association is strengthened through continued drug use, it becomes increasingly difficult for the user to think of anything other than the drug.

Yet, while dopamine drives formation of the drug-reward associations, decades of research by Kalivas have shown that another neurotransmitter, glutamate, is also implicated in drug addiction. Typically, glutamate would be released in the synapse in response to cues that signal reward but would then be cleared by a glutamate transporter a protein that regulates glutamate signaling.1 This balanced release and clearance of glutamate facilitates the brains ability to fine-tune and adapt learned behaviors in response to environmental stimuli.

Kalivas illustrates this hijacking of the brain by drug-related thoughts with an anecdote:

Nac May Help Prevent Heart Disease

Oxidative damage can destroy heart tissue and lead to head attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular issues.

Because NAC is helpful in reducing oxidative stress, it can be useful in preventing oxidative damage to tissues of the heart. This gives it great potential to help in the treatment and prevention of heart disease.

NAC also improves blood flow and circulation by increasing nitric oxide production and acting as an anti-aggregate. An anti-aggregate prevents platelets from clumping together to form a clot in your blood vessels.

As stated in the PCOS section of this article, NAC has also been shown to have benefits on healthy cholesterol levels.

Nac For Parkinsons Disease

Parkinsons Disease is also caused by deterioration of neurons in the brain and nervous system. It has been found that most patients with Parkinsons have oxidative damage. In animal models, treatment with NAC has led to improvements in: increased levels of glutathione in the brain, reduction of oxidative damage, and increased brain mitochondrial activities.

Nac And Glutathione Production

NAC N

NAC is one of a handful of dietary supplements that is also used quite frequently in hospital settings.

When a patient comes to the hospital with an acetaminophen overdose, standard of care is to use intravenous NAC to protect the liver and help the body excrete accumulated toxins. 1 This is one of NACs primary benefits the ability to replenish levels of glutathione in the liver after depletion.

When we take acetaminophen, a metabolite called NAPQI is produced, which in high enough doses is very toxic to the liver.1 Under normal circumstances, one of the bodys most important endogenous antioxidants, glutathione, cleans up the overdose before any lasting harm can be done. However, when mega doses of acetaminophen are taken, hepatic glutathione stores run out and the body doesnt have enough to detoxify the bad stuff the acetaminophen is producing.

The result can be liver damage and, if enough is taken, death.

NAC is a glutathione precursor and proven nutrient for restoring depleted glutathione levels. A double blind, placebo control study showed a 28% reduction in mortality when IV NAC was administered after an acetaminophen overdose. 2

Nac For Ocd Bipolar And Depression

There have been studies showing benefits of using NAC in moderate to severe OCD. In one randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial NAC was used in addition to fluvoxamine, a common SSRI, in one treatment group. The other group received fluvoxamine and placebo. The group receiving NAC in addition to their medication experienced more improvement in symptoms compared to the placebo group.

NAC has also been found to decrease symptoms of depression and bipolar disorder. In one analysis, it was found that NAC reduced depressive symptoms and resulted in an overall increase in functionality.

While NAC does show promise in supporting mental health, you should not use NAC to replace your medication or make changes to your regimen without talking to your doctor.

Helps Relieve Symptoms Of Respiratory Conditions

NAC can relieve symptoms of respiratory conditions by acting as an antioxidant and expectorant, loosening mucus in your air passageways.

As an antioxidant, NAC helps replenish glutathione levels in your lungs and reduces inflammation in your bronchial tubes and lung tissue.

People with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease experience long-term oxidative damage and inflammation of lung tissue, which causes airways to constrict, leading to shortness of breath and coughing.

NAC supplements have been used to improve COPD symptoms, exacerbations, and lung decline (

People with chronic bronchitis can also benefit from NAC.

Bronchitis occurs when the mucous membranes in your lungs bronchial passageways become inflamed, swell, and shut off airways to your lungs .

In addition to relieving COPD and bronchitis, NAC may improve other lung and respiratory tract conditions such as cystic fibrosis, asthma, and pulmonary fibrosis as well as symptoms of nasal and sinus congestion due to allergies or infections (

Summary

NACs antioxidant and expectorant capacity can improve lung function by decreasing inflammation and breaking up mucus.

May Stabilize Blood Sugar By Decreasing Inflammation In Fat Cells

What Alcohol Does to Your Body

High blood sugar and obesity contribute to inflammation in fat tissue.

This can lead to damage or destruction of insulin receptors and increase the risk of type 2 diabetes .

Animal studies show that NAC may stabilize blood sugar by decreasing inflammation in fat cells and thereby improving insulin resistance .

When insulin receptors are intact and healthy, they properly remove sugar from your blood, keeping levels within normal limits.

However, keep in mind that human research on NAC is needed to confirm these effects on blood sugar control.

Summary

Oxidative damage to heart tissue often leads to heart disease, causing strokes, heart attacks, and other serious conditions.

NAC may reduce heart disease risk by reducing oxidative damage to tissues in your heart .

It has also been shown to increase nitric oxide production, which helps veins dilate and improves blood flow. This expedites blood transit back to your heart and can lower your risk of heart attacks .

Interestingly, in an older test-tube study, when combined with green tea, NAC appeared to reduce damage from oxidized LDL cholesterol, another contributor to heart disease .

Summary

NAC can reduce oxidative damage to your heart, which can, in turn, decrease your risk of heart disease.

Nac May Correct Glutamate Dysregulation

Approximately 85% of individuals with an SUD do not seek treatment for it, and those who do are older, have a longer history of use, have more severe dependence, and have sought treatment numerous times before.1 By the time most people seek treatment, years of chronic substance use have likely led to significant brain-related adaptations. Individuals with SUDs often indicate that their substance use began as a pleasurable activitythe effects of the drug were enjoyable and they were motivated to use it again. With repeated substance use, they may begin to develop a stronger urge to use the drug, driven not necessarily by a desire for pleasure, but by compulsion.2

Numerous neural adaptations underlie the transition from liking a substance to engaging in the compulsive use that is characteristic of an SUD.2 For example, repeated use of an addictive substance may result in excess glutamate in the nucleus accumbens,3,4 an area of the brain that plays a critical role in motivation and learning. As a result, it is has been proposed that pharmacotherapies that help correct glutamate dysregulation may be effective in promoting abstinence or preventing relapse to a substance.5,6
