Life is stressful! Between work, school, family responsibilities, and even our own self-care, our lives are jam-packed to the brim and busy, busy, busy. Many women are so busy that they dont take time to check in with themselves, and stay in tune with their stressors and emotional triggers. Oftentimes, many women end up turning to food because of this without even realizing it. If this sounds like you, try to get more intune with your emotional triggers that have you turning to food. The next time you binge, ask yourself what you were feeling and what could have led you to binge eat. Next, create a list of activities you can do when dealt with those feelings in the future. These could be activities such as cuddling with your dog, sitting alone with your emotions and having a good cry, calling your BFF, or taking a yoga class to put you into a calm state of being.

Dont Start A New Diet

Most people try to overcome junk food addiction by starting a new diet but this approach doesnt work. Most diets are too rigid and impossible to stick to long-term.

People usually go back to old eating habits once they cant keep up with the new diet.

Instead of starting a new diet, change your eating habits. Replace junk food with healthier alternatives like veggies, fruits, legumes, and whole grains. Make sure you eat plant-based foods at every meal.

A Culpable Food Industry

Many people believe the food industry spikes food with processed sugars and flours knowing this will lead to food addiction.

Indeed, many supermarket premade dishes contain more sugar than a bar of chocolate! The sweetness of these dishes is often hidden by an infusion of salt and spices.

In fact, some even say processed sugar is more addictive than cocaine!

Studies conducted on rats exposed to junk food prove the rats suffer withdrawal symptoms when the junk food is removed similar to that suffered by rats addicted to drugs or alcohol.

This was particularly the case for rats addicted to sugar. When sugar was withdrawn, the rats suffered several withdrawal symptoms: shaking, anxiety and a change in body temperature.

Scientists say youre least likely to become addicted to unprocessed natural foods such as vegetables, nuts, beans and seeds.

When words like “food addiction” are bandied about, there are plenty of skeptics who hesitate to put foods like cheese and chocolate into the same category as widely acknowledged addictions such as cocaine or alcohol. But Barnard asks, “What other term would you use for a woman who gets into her car at 11:30 at night and drives six miles to the 7-Eleven to get a chocolate bar, and does it every night? She’s gaining weight, she feels profoundly guilty afterward, and though she resolves to stop this behavior, she does it every night, night after night? That’s a food addiction.”

The proponents of this food addiction theory point to possible differences between the sexes in their compulsions. Women may be more susceptible to chocolate, particularly in the premenstrual period. While some men may have a sweet tooth, many more say that the one food they’re least likely to give up is steak. In an animal study at Princeton University in 2002, researchers found that after rats binged on sugar, they showed classic signs of withdrawal when the sweets were removed from their diet, suggesting that sugar may have addictive properties.

“Yes, people do get into habits,” adds Ayoob. “But the good part is that habits can be changed.”

Signs Of Food Obsession

Thinking about food and obsessing about food are two very different things. Deciphering between the two is important when assessing whether or not your relationship with food is healthy and, well, normal. A few signs of food obsession include:

  • Inability to concentrate on tasks unrelated to food.
  • Overwhelming stress over when and what your next meal will be.
  • Anxiety if a meal or snack doesnt go according to plan.
  • Lack of mindful enjoyment while eating.
  • An all-or-nothing mindset around food.

Throughout my time as a dancer with disordered eating, I always wondered why and how my habits around food went from normal to disordered. Though my intentions came from a good place my delivery quickly grew unsustainable and led me to burnout.

What Sort Of Help Do I Need

Like in other addictions, the eating disorder convinces you that you dont really have it or that it isnt that bad. If you are reading this, it might be that bad. You might also be using drugs and alcohol, or be having other self harm behaviors such as cutting or burning yourself. Often, depression and anxiety go hand in hand with eating disorders. Put all this together, and you have a very complicated and dangerous problem. It is not likely that you can figure out on your own how to tackle these problems.

First, talk with your doctor. Be direct and honest with him or her, and ask for help. Surprisingly, many doctors do not know how to treat eating disorders. If your doctor doesnt know what to do, consider finding another.

Second, seek therapy. An eating disorders specialist can help you identify the problem, and determine what sort of help you need. Be careful in choosing a specialist. Many therapists know very little about eating disorders, and therefore may be unhelpful.

Third, see a registered dietitian. Be sure they are registered and have training in eating disorders treatment. Eating disorders are complicated and dangerous and not just anyone can safely advise you how to eat properly.

Are you addicted to junk food filled with sugar? Is that even possible? Is addiction driving the obesity epidemic?

Addiction to food is a very controversial issue. There are many strong opinions in the medical field on both sides.

Dr. Nora Volkow, the Director of the National Institute of Drug Abuse, has done extensive research on addiction and obesity. She has concluded that addiction to foods, especially ones high in sugar and fat, is real. She has done extensive research showing that the reward pathways in the brain are disrupted in people who are obese, especially those involving dopaminesometimes known as the pleasure neurotransmitter.

Dopamine is released when we do pleasurable things like eat, have sex, or use drugs. When people do these things too often, or in larger amounts than normal, the brain adapts and makes it harder to trigger this system. This leads people to use more and more in order to feel good. It leads to a vicious cycle of addiction.

An article in the European Journal of Nutrition reviewed some of the science and concluded that sugar addiction is not real. They claim that binging on so-called comfort foods only occurs in the context of food deprivation.
