How To Help Your Child With Addiction

Parents Cannot Fix This On Their Own

This Advice Will Save Your Addicted Child’s Life!

This statement is regarding what I have written above. This is a problem only the person with addiction can fix. A concept such as this is very hard for a person like me to accept, because I try to fix everything. No one is allowed in the mind of a person with addiction, except for them. They are the only ones that can decide to change their lives, for better or for worse. This will not end until they decide to end it. Many times, parents try to make that decision for them and it only winds up resulting in more frustration and failure. What parents can do is encourage them to seek help or treatment, and let them arrive at the decision themselves.

Will My Insurance Cover My Adult Childs Drug Addiction Treatments

For adult children between the ages of 18-26 who are still on their parents plan, Recovery Centers of America is in-network with most insurance providers, and many insurance plans have a provision for drug treatment. However, the amount of coverage and the costs associated with copays and premiums will vary with different insurance policies. Financial counselors are available and will help you and your adult child gain insight into what your plan covers and what it does not cover. Finances should never be a hindrance to drug addiction treatment, so Recovery Centers of America offers scholarships and financial assistance programs to make drug addiction treatment accessible and affordable.

Having goals in mind helps. A common mistake that can set parents up for a long struggle is focusing on stopping the gaming addiction. Perhaps surprisingly, that isnt a helpful goal or purpose.

Thinking in positive terms is much more likely to lead to success. Instead of stopping gaming, a more effective goal is to help your child replace gaming with other activities. Taking him on a journey of discovery is important. What, other than online gaming, does he want in his life?

As your child is starting something and he gradually turns his time and attention to other things, you can let him play some videogames. Once of the ways to end an addiction is to find balance. Video gaming doesnt have to be an all-or-nothing experience. If he knows this, he will be more likely to cooperate .

Create And Reinforce Consistent Guidelines

Establishing guidelines will set clear expectations for your child regarding acceptable and unacceptable behaviors. Clear, consistent rules are related to improved outcomes with addiction. Not only will guidelines help your child, they will help determine your reactions to situations as they present.

Guidelines work best when they are developed in collaboration with your child. This way, all parties have a say regarding the consequences of their behaviors before the behavior is completed.

The best guidelines will read like a list of cause and effect statements if occurs will be the consequence. Since it is concretely established, there will be no surprises later. Of course, it will be impossible to cover every contingency, but by establishing guidelines for the most common events, you can reduce the odds of emotionally fueled reactions that have less-than-productive outcomes.

No matter how strong your guidelines, poor consistency will render them ineffective. If your child has been driving under the influence and you take their keys in some situations but not others, you are reducing the efficacy of your guidelines. This inconsistency will diminish the relationship with your child as their respect for you decreases.

How to Help Your Child with a Video Game Addiction

Avoiding actions that lead to power struggles can make the process go a bit more smoothly. When working with your child, dont:

  • Make them admit to having a problem or keep telling them they have a problem.
  • Force them into wanting to change their habits. While thats the ultimate goal, it should happen naturally over time.
  • Show anger in response to any outbursts.
  • Cushion their fall by lightening the consequences or allowing extra time.
  • Enable the behavior by covering for their missed school or work, completing their homework, or otherwise taking care of their responsibilities.

Something important to remember as you help your child is that this is an addiction. Your son or daughter will likely experience video game withdrawal symptoms: restlessness, irritability, mood swings that include anger and crying, obsessive thoughts about gaming and gaming friends, and difficulty focusing on other things.

Be patient with your child and yourself. Allow the symptoms of gaming addiction to come and go, stick with your process consistently, and in time their passions and interests will replace excessive gaming. Its how to help your child addicted to gaming.

Why Your Child Is Addicted To Video Games

Game creators work hard to hook players to their games. They use predictive algorithms and principles of behavioral economics to make the gamer binge.

Games become addictive because it triggers the brains reward system, and shapes a childs behavior. Studies made by the California State University found that video games can have a similar effect on childrens brains as drug abuse or alcoholism. The impulsive part of the brain, known as the amygdala-striatal system was smaller and more sensitive in excessive users so that it processed the stimuli of games faster.

Massive multiplayer online role-playing games or MMORPGs immerse the player in real time because of the seemingly endless possibility of discovering more powerful loot or items. He is also enticed to complete events and achievements that requires a lot of gaming time.

Gamers who play games with social aspects, such as the World of Warcraft, spend the most time playing, sometimes for more than 40 hours a week even more than a full-time job. The social element makes gaming even more compulsive, and hard to quit. Social gaming satisfies the human need for being in charge, feeling competent, and feeling connected with others. Some online gamers even feel that they are duty bound to go online because others rely on them or their clan needs them for a scrim.

In many other games, the gamer works hard towards achieving a goal and quitting the game prematurely would waste everything the gamer has worked for.

How To Help Your Kids Overcome Addiction

Drug addiction is a major problem in today’s world. The major part of these drug abuse victims are teenagers. There are several reasons may drive your teen kid to hard drugs which include peer pressure, neglect, curiosity or just for the sake of being cool. This could be a major concern for the parents whose children get addicted to drugs but an important thing to keep in mind is that the only person who can help your kid overcome addiction are the parents.

Here are a few measures that can help your kid overcome drug addiction:

  • In order to put your kids on the right path, the most important thing is to show them love. You should keep aside your anger, fear and grief and approach them. Tell them why you are scared or angry. Proper love and affection is required to bring your kids back to the normal track.
  • Try to find their strengths and weakness. Your child should be complemented for any good thing he or she does. You should observe them properly and try to perceive their current nature and mental state.
  • You should try to keep your calm and talk to them instead of scolding, shouting or threatening them. You must also listen to them carefully and try not to react in any way. Talk to them about your concerns and see whether they are cooperating with you.
  • You must tell your kids that what they are doing is risky and illegal and as parents, you have the right to help them overcome this in order to maintain good health, and that you do not want them to go to prison.

    Move From Guidelines To Boundaries

When youre setting guidelines, you are laying down rules based on your childs behaviors.

Your boundaries, by contrast, will stipulate precisely what you will or wont do for your child when it comes to their substance abuse.

Think of your boundaries as representative of what you feel is a reasonable way for others to treat you.

If youve been dealing with a son or daughter addicted to drugs, youll already know how well people with drug addictions can push boundaries, whether thats directly, or more manipulatively and indirectly.

Its a smart move to set your boundaries during a calm period. This will give you the chance to think rationally and objectively, rather than in the midst of a turbulent emotional confrontation with your child.

Reach Out To A Family Member For Support

Whether youre in high school, college, or working on your career, having someone or several people to help you is important. Like the saying goes, teamwork makes the dream work, so if you have a parent with an addiction and dont know where to start, ask another trusted and close family member for help.

Make sure this person is someone reliable and has the persons best interests in mind. Make sure this is someone you respect, trust, and who understands you and the situation youre in. It doesnt even have to be a family member, either. It could be a teacher, counselor, or coach.

Help Yourself As You Help Them

Its often been said that you cant pour out of an empty cup. When you are a parent of a child who has an addiction its important to find support for yourself as you try to provide support for them. Support could mean finding an individual counselor to help you sort through your thoughts, point out distorted thinking, and provide you with encouragement as you wrestle through all of the emotions of being a support person for your child. Another way to find support is to find a local Al-Anon meeting which is a meeting for those who have loved ones struggling with addiction. Finding books, articles, or online support groups can also help provide you with the education needed to help you understand the problem of addiction, and provide you with the reassurance that you are not alone. Finding support will only help you further help your child. The best thing you can do is find support in a community or others who have traveled or are traveling on the current road you are on.

Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken .

As you navigate the difficulty of caring for a child who has an addiction it’s important to remind yourself that God loves your child, and is ultimately the one who is in control.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life .
