Tips to deal with your youngsters gaming

Here are a few hints for supporting more solid ways to deal with gaming for youngsters include:

  • encourage sport and physical activity. This can increase blood levels of serotonin and have a positive effect on mood and symptoms of problematic gaming
  • talk to your child about what they enjoy about gaming and why they want to game regularly. Their answer will help you identify if there are others issues they may be experiencing and using gaming as an escape
  • when you call your child off their game, ensure they have an activity to shift to, such as a family outing or dinner. This will create a reason to get off
  • when calling your child off a game, give them time to finish the game. Continuously being asked to get off mid-game can be frustrating and lead to arguments. Ask them how much longer they will need to finish the game and then ensure they get off when the game is over.

Not Everyone Agrees This Is A Disorder

While it feels like this classification is a fait accompli, the designation of gaming disorder as an addiction remains hotly debated.

The American Psychiatric Association is still not convinced. Two things are holding it back.

The first is that problem gaming often occurs alongside other factors such as loneliness, or mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression. The APA argues problematic gaming may be a symptom of these, rather than a unique condition in its own right.

The second issue for the APA is the lack of strong evidence and research to support gaming disorder as an addiction in its own right.

Other experts have also weighed into this debate suggesting the classification is simply a response to the huge community concern and moral panic about video games.

Weight Loss Or Weight Gain

People who are addicted to video games tend to put off eating until theyre extremely hungry. And when they do eat, they do it in front of their computer.

Playing video games involves a lot of sitting, which can cause a number of other health problems like heart disease, diabetes, and poor circulation.

The Real Effect Of Anger And Disappointment

Now more about unconditional love: That kind of love would mean that our love would not be affected by what they do. Thats what unconditional love means.

But we really dont know how to do that. How do I know? We PROVE it every time we become angry, or disappointed, or impatient, or irritated at them. Our anger and disappointment and frustration are undeniable PROOF that our love is not unconditional.

Deep inside, you know that what Im saying is true, but let me demonstrate further: When other people are angry at YOU, do YOU like it? NO, you dont. Not ever. Nobody does. When other people are angry at us, or when were angry at other people, were all saying, Look at what you did to ME, or failed to do FOR ME.

In anger, were focused on OURSELVESMe-Me-Meand in that moment other peoplenotably our childrenhear only four words, I dont love you. When were angry, were far too occupied with ourselves to unconditionally love another person.

Could My Kid Be Addicted To Video Games

The word addiction gets used a lot to describe a certain kind of focused attention on media and technology. We say were addicted to checking our email or addicted to watching Game of Thrones. Kids, however, might display what looks to be addictive behavior when theyre only super engaged in creating something or getting to the next level in a game.

But if you have real concerns about your kids behavior and notice mood changes, falling grades, mounting bills, or a lack of human interaction, you may want to talk with your pediatrician about the possibility of game addiction or the idea that another issue, such as depression, might be causing these problems.

Consider how much time you spend looking at screens, too. Make sure youre setting a good example at home by moderating your own technology use. And its always a good idea to invite your child to do something together in the real world.

What Is Gaming Addiction

Gaming addiction is the compulsion to play video games to such an extent that it has negative effects upon your life, and being unable to stop playing even if you wish to. As with any addiction, it is fundamentally a disorder of the brains reward centres, which creates an abnormal level of certain chemicals in the brain: addicts will experience an excess of dopamine when they play games thus creating a sensation of happiness and wellbeing and on the other hand will suffer from a deficiency thereof when they are unable to play, drastically lowering their mood and, over the long term, causing depression.

The World Health Organisation has defined gaming addiction as a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behaviour , defined by three criteria: the lack of control of playing video games, priority given to video games over other interests, and inability to stop playing video games even after being affected by negative consequences. Gaming addiction can have highly detrimental effects on an addicts life, causing them to give up previously valuable relationships in favour of the isolation which gaming entails, and potentially having serious financial consequences including the loss of jobs and the acquisition of huge debt to fund new games and/or in-game purchases.

Using Video Games As A Coping Mechanism

If you go home and play video games after a long day at work, then that would be considered a healthy coping mechanism. But if you play video games for several hours to decompress, then that is when your gaming habit becomes a problem.

If video games get in the way of you trying to address the cause of stress from your job, then that is unhealthy. If you are unable to look for another job because you spend so much time gaming, then that is a sign of video game addiction.

It is fine to use gaming as a coping mechanism to de-stress from your day. However, when you start to ignore your problems and use video games to cope with them, then that is when your gaming habit becomes a problem.

Why Video Games Are So Addictive

Whether itâs video games or games you play on your phone, theyâre a wonderful â and effective â escape.

That escape is what was so appealing to Ryan, a 41-year-old in Washington State who tells Inverse he knows what it is like to get into an unhealthy relationship with games.

âI wasnât really into games as a kid,â Ryan says. âI got into them a bit in middle school.â

When his older brother died in an alcohol-related accident, Ryanâs parents became both stricter and more removed, he recalls. Gaming provided much-needed relief.

âThey didnât want me going out once I got into high school,â he says. âVideo games were the only thing I could do at home that also took my mind off how terrible everything was.â

Soon, every minute he wasnât in school, he was gaming.

Part of the reason why games offer such escape is to do with the very nature of the gameplay, Grammar explains.

âVideo games are so good at letting people escape because the player takes over a different character and has control over the characters choices and outcomes,â Grammar says.

âWhen used for an appropriate amount of time, it can be restorative to be in the moment and playing a game,â he says.

But, he adds, âgames are designed to keep people playing for as long as possible in many different ways and hit the reward center of the brain as often as possible.â And thatâs where things can go awry.

Similarity To Other Addictions

How to tell if you are addicted to gaming and how to get help

Video game addictions are similar to other addictions in terms of the amount of time spent playing, the strong emotional attachment to the activity, and the patterns of social difficulties experienced by gaming addicts.

As with other addictions, gaming addicts become preoccupied with game-playing, and it disrupts family and other areas of life, such as school.

The younger that children begin playing video games, the more likely they are to develop dependence-like behaviors.

As with other addictive behaviors, there is a range of different responses to the activity. While some gamers feel unable to reduce the time they spend playing, others do not experience cravings if they are unable to play.

Is It A True Addiction

Like other behavioral addictions, video game addiction is a controversial idea. While video gaming research is showing some disturbing effects, particularly in younger players, there is a lack of long-term research and insufficient evidence to definitively conclude that video game overuse is indeed an addiction.

In addition, cautionary messages from groups, such as the American Medical Association, which believes that video games are potentially harmful, have to compete with the aggressive marketing of the video games industry, whose own research, unsurprisingly, shows no ill effects.

Internet Gaming Disorder is currently included as a condition for further study in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders , the “gold standard” reference for mental health conditions. Therefore, although it is not yet recognized fully as a disorder, proposed criteria have been published.
