New Directions Addiction Recovery Services provides a variety of services to residents suffering from drug and alcohol abuse. The centers treatment approach begins with detoxification, where most addicts undergo an initial cleanse to remove toxins from their bodies. This preliminary step allows clients to reduce cravings for drugs and alcohol, while strengthening the bodys natural ability to heal itself. During this stage, residents are taught to prepare healthy meals, exercise more frequently, and avoid stimulants like coffee, cigarettes, and even pizzas. Once detoxified, residents move on to stabilization, where they learn to deal with emotional and physical stressors that cause relapse and addiction.

Alcoholism and addiction can be isolating experiences that tear families apart, and there is an overwhelming necessity in Northern Illinois for substance abuse prevention efforts. There have been over 150 reported overdoses in McHenry County alone between 2015-2017, most of those being young people. There is a lack of resources in our community when it comes to transitional living, and we are seeing patterns of individuals going into 30-day treatment centers only to relapse shortly after getting out on their own. This lack of support after initial treatment has been destroying the lives of young people and tearing families apart.

So, what exactly does the New Directions Sober Living offer its residents and the community?New Directions operates 3 homes in Crystal Lake The Ellsworth home serves 11 male residents, the Lincoln home serves 5 female residents and the Tile Line home serves 8 male residents. Not only do these homes gives 24 residents a safe and stable living environment, but also provides services that help them integrate back into the community and further develop themselves in meaningful ways.Case managers will work to help them build a resume, reclaim a lost drivers license, pay off outstanding court fees, and more. They also get to participate in regular outings and events at The Other Side, the New Directions sober bar, to help them become part of a supportive social group.
