The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism is one of the countrys most valued resources when it comes to research on alcohol. One of the 27 organizations that are under the umbrella of the National Institutes of Health , NIAAA has been funding and conducting research on the impact that alcohol has on health and wellbeing for more than 40 years. In fact, it provides more funding for alcohol research than any other organization in the world.

NIAAA focuses on:

On the last day of 1970, President Nixon signed the Comprehensive Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism Prevention, Treatment, and Rehabilitation Act of 1970, which authorized a federal program to address the treatment and prevention of alcohol use disorders including alcoholism. First established as part of the National Institute of Mental Health , it was made an independent organization within the National Institutes of Health in 1974.

The research conducted and supported by NIAAA in the past 40+ years has influenced legislation and policymaking, helped to shift the public perspective from viewing alcohol use disorders as moral failings to seeing the issues as medical disorders, and helped the substance abuse treatment and medical community better understand how to effectively treat these disorders. Gradually reducing Caffeine intake over several weeks instead of quitting cold turkey can help reduce the severity of withdrawal symptoms. Compared to other addictions, the withdrawal and recovery periods from Caffeine are relatively short. Most Caffeine addiction symptoms can be resolved in 7-12 days of consumption reduction. During that period, the brain will naturally decrease the number of adenosine receptors on each cell in response to the sudden lack of Caffeine. If an individual can decrease intake until it becomes nothing, within a few weeks the levels of adenosine receptors in the brain will reset to their baseline levels the addiction will be broken.

Hhs Announces $2m Grant Award To Establish National Center Of Excellence On Social Media And Mental Wellness

HHS, through SAMHSA, awarded $2 million in funding to the American Academy of Pediatrics to establish a National Center of Excellence on Social Media and Mental Wellness. The Center is intended to make social media platforms safer for children and youth by developing and disseminating information, guidance, training on the impact of social media use.

How We Choose Our Centers

Addicted.org hand-selects each center listed in our database using the following criteria.

  • State Licensure
  • Ethical Standards

We ensure each new center we list is licensed by their state and check that they have an established clinical and medical staff. Before listing any new center, we check its online reputation and ensure they have a good history of working with clients.

As a rule, we make sure that the treatment methodology offered by the centers is tested and has a history of success. We include evidence-based, holistic, and alternative treatment models. We refrain from listing centers that utilize untested treatment practices that do have a proven track record of success.

Certifications and Accreditations like JCAHO and CARF ensure treatment centers meet a certain standard. We prioritize these listings, but also include centers that are not accredited. We do this because it gives individuals more options to choose from, and the absence of accreditation does not always mean the center is of low quality.

Finally, we are constantly monitoring the centers in our listing to make sure they meet our high ethical standards. If we find that a center is partaking in practices that are harmful or exploitive to its clients, then they are removed from our directory.

How Caffeine Affects The Brain

Rock In Prevention

Caffeine is addictive because of the way that the drug affects the human brain and produces the alert feeling that people crave. Soon after Caffeine is consumed, its absorbed through the small intestine and dissolved into the bloodstream. Because the chemical is both water and fat-soluble, its able to penetrate the blood-brain barrier and enter the brain.

Structurally, Caffeine closely resembles a molecule called adenosine thats naturally present in the brain. Caffeine resembles the molecule so much that it can fit neatly into the brain cells receptors for adenosine, effectively blocking them off. Normally, the adenosine produced over time locks into these receptors and produces a feeling of tiredness. When Caffeine molecules are blocking those receptors, they prevent this from occurring a sense of alertness and energy is experienced until the caffeine is metabolized. Additionally, some of the brains own natural Stimulants are released such as dopamine and work more effectively when the adenosine receptors are blocked. The surplus of adenosine cues the adrenal glands to secrete adrenaline, another Stimulant, and this further increases alertness and reduces feelings of tiredness.

Addiction Support Groups For Families

While addiction is hard on an individual, his or her family is also affected. It can be difficult for loved ones to forgive an addicted person for past wrongs or stay supportive of their recovery. Family support groups treat addiction as a condition that affects the entire family.

Constructive family involvement helps the addicted person heal and mitigates bitterness amongst family members.

Popular family support groups include Families Anonymous and Al-Anon. These groups also teach family members how to encourage an addicted person to seek help or maintain sobriety.

Family support groups teach loved ones how to avoid:

  • Enabling an addicted person.
  • Blaming the individual for use.
  • Denying what led to drug use.
  • Holding grudges.
  • Withholding issues and not talking.

It is beneficial to the recovering addicts success when family members understand what their loved one is dealing with. Knowing that addiction can affect anyone and seeking help can heal the family as a whole.

Organizations That Want To Help You Quit Smoking

Some say it’s as hard to quit smoking as it is to kick a heroin habit, so it’s no surprise that there are numerous Web sites, products and services dedicated to helping smokers quit. Even if you do manage to quit smoking cigarettes, there’s a 75 percent chance that you’ll pick the habit up again in your lifetime . Tobacco use kills close to 400,000 people each year and contributes to almost $200 billion in health care costs in the United States alone . On top of the well-known lung-related illnesses, smokers also have an increased risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, and cancers of the bladder, cervix, kidney, stomach and uterus.

Smoking is bad for your health and the health of people around you, and it’s not too easy on the wallet either. Cigarettes cost around $5 per pack. If you’re smoking a pack a day, that means you’re inhaling around $1,825 of your hard-earned money every year. In the U.S., smokers spend more than $83 billion on cigarettes each year .

There are a slew of smoking cessation products on the market, from smokeless tobacco products and nicotine gum to prescription medications aimed at helping smokers quit. While there’s no easy way to quit smoking, there are organizations out there that want to help you quit smoking — including, oddly enough, tobacco companies! Read on to learn more.
