Why Does Pill Look Like A Birth Control Case

Heitzenrater said she and her husband initially thought about using a plunger or hopper to re-engineer a pill bottle. But the team at ROBRADY wanted something less Rube Goldberg.

In this day and age, with all the digital technology, youve got to embrace that, said chief executive officer and design director Rob Brady.

The team adapted the idea of a birth control disc because the packaging sends the message of being on a schedule. The color is the same as a pill bottle, so people would know they are dealing with a prescription.

We are big into brand recognition, he said.

The name, though, could be a bit confusing. PILL is the working title, and Heitzenrater is thinking of an acronym that reinforces the idea of doling out the medication according to a time frame.

Weve been brainstorming, said Heitzenrater, who also is the mother of a toddler. Prescription internal locking or something. I would love for it to stand for something. Now its more tongue-in-cheek.

The team recently posted on Survey Monkey, asking people to choose one of three phrases that describe PILL.

Corrections & Clarifications: An earlier version of this story misspelled the first name of Afton Heitzenrater.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. A physician’s assistant and her husband have developed a pill bottle that controls when and how much medication is dispensed.

And Afton Heitzenrater, 30, of the Rochester suburb of Spencerport, N.Y., and her husband, Jeff, now think they have a way to stop opioid misuse before it has the chance to start.

It allows for responsible prescribing, dispensing, use and tracking of controlled substances, said Heitzenrater, a 30-year-old physician assistant in the emergency department at Rochester General Hospital.

Afton Heitzenrater’s fiancé inspired her six years ago when she was telling him about her day at an orthopedic practice where she worked: Before noon, she had taken nine calls from patients who said they were out of their pain pills.

May 3: Attorney General Jeff Sessions blames corrupt doctors for opioid crisis

Then around the same time, a young, healthy cousin died from a prescription overdose.

Jeff Heitzenrater wondered why a pill bottle couldn’t control how much a person was taking, like pain pumps that patients use in a hospital. With the help of Jeffs uncle, Joseph Bujalski of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Robrady Design in Sarasota, Fla., the couple developed PILL, an electronically metered dispensing system for opioids.

The electronics are self-contained and do not use wireless or cellphone signals.

How We Judged The Automatic Medication Dispensers

When it came to evaluating each automatic pill dispenser, I had many options to review. Each device offers its own unique set of pros and cons, so, despite the number appended to each of them, the real question you should ask yourself is which dispenser is right for you. Still, there are some overarching qualities that I looked for.

Here is how I rated each device:

    How Does Pill Work

e-pill CompuMed Tamper-Resistant Locked Automatic Pill Dispenser

PILL is a thin, hard orange plastic container holding a blister pack, a dial that is rotated from the underside of the casing and a computer chip set to release a pill when the prescription says so every six hours, for example.

When the countdown display hits zero, the dial can be rotated by the user to expose the pill. The person doesnt have to take the pill right away. Once the pill is removed and the person turns the dial, the timer resets and the device is locked until the predetermined interval elapses.

The chip could be set to different intervals shorter when the patient first gets the medication and longer after a few days, as the individual’s need diminishes.

When the medication is finished or the device times out after the length of the prescription, the person would bring the dispenser back to the pharmacy. Data then could be downloaded and the information could be used by the doctor or combined with data from other people with the same condition to study appropriate dosing for particular conditions. Some data might be specific to the patient.

This Pill Dispenser Is Designed To Fight Addiction

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World released 16 award-winning public service announcement videos in 2009 exposing the endemic problems of prescription drug abuse. Six years later, four Johns Hopkins students decided to take matters into their own hands.

Megan Carney, Joseph Hajj, Joseph Heaney and Welles Sakmar — all 22 years old and recent graduates of Johns Hopkins University — spent their senior year building a device aimed at helping stamp out medication misuse among addicts. The team unveiled its prototype at Johns Hopkins senior design day, an annual event held at the end of the spring semester.

The high-tech design of the dispenser makes drug misuse virtually impossible. A fingerprint scanner ensures that the drugs are being given to the prescribed patient, while an internal timer dispenses the pills in prescribed intervals and dosages.

The device starts to work when the patient scans in his or her fingerprint, Carney said in a statement. This rotates a disc, which picks up a pill from a loaded cartridge and empties it into the exit channel. The pill falls down the channel and lands on a platform where the patient can see that the pill has been dispensed.

Carney told The Huffington Post that her team decided to develop the pill dispenser after recognizing that there was nothing in the market like it. The current pill dispensers you get from the pharmacists are neither secure nor personalized, she said. We saw that there could be a use for a new one.

    Benefits Of Automatic Pill Dispensers

For seniors, an automatic pill dispensing system takes the stress out of remembering medication doses. With 40 percent of older adults living with memory impairment, establishing a medication regimen can be a lifesaver.

Loved ones can relax, knowing the system will issue a reminder when the next dose is due, and since the dose will come ready measured, there is no chance of taking the wrong amount. Using an automatic pill dispenser helps support independence in the home.

For caregivers, knowing their loved one has a system at hand for keeping track of meds is a relief. They get peace of mind knowing that even if they are not there, their loved ones medications are measured and ready to be dosed out at the right time. Some pill dispensers also offer monitoring options for caregivers who want to keep a closer watch on their loved ones.
