What Causes Food Addiction
Consuming highly palatable foods, or foods that are high in carbohydrates, fat, salt, sugar, or artificial sweeteners, triggers the pleasure centers of the brain and releases feel-good chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin. These foods affect the same area of the brain as drugs, alcohol, and behaviors such as shopping or gambling.
Highly palatable foods often contain unnatural substances or higher-than-normal levels of natural substances that your body and brain can’t process. This results in your body being flooded with feel-good chemicals.
To help you hang on to or recreate those good feelings, your body and brain will begin to crave highly palatable foods. And, because your brain will adjust its receptors to compensate for the rush of chemicals, you’ll eventually need to consume increasing quantities of highly palatable foods to get the same feel-good reaction.

Youre Chronically Stressed Out
Ongoing stress causes blood levels of the adrenal gland hormone cortisol to become consistently elevated. Cortisol promotes hunger and sugar cravings, and likewise, eating sugar can spike cortisol levels. If stress is unrelenting, the adrenal glands may eventually tire out, leading to depressed cortisol levels and adrenal fatigue, which can further trigger sugar cravings and addiction.
The solution: Learn to retrain your stress response by practicing breathing through your nose and belly breathing techniques. Try not to eat when youre stressed out take a walk instead.
How Long Should You Detox From Sugar
This will depend on your personal goals. Just need a reset after too much indulgence? 5 days is fine.
However, if like mine, your relationship with sugar has become a habit or physical addiction, 30 days is a good start. Many people find that it takes about a month to break a habit, however, other research suggests it may take much longer. Furthermore, to break a habit, one must replace it with another behavior.

After a night of drinking or bar-hopping with friends, eating whatever you see on the fridge, even junk food seems like a good idea. Because alcohol causes poor judgment in many people, so this can break your recovery.
Also, avoid soda because it has addictive substances and has high sugar contents. Dont make it a part of your every day life to consume sugar because this can trigger addiction to your brain.

“There’s nothing that can compare to the stress of having an addicted parent. This is someone who was your caregiver since you were a baby. You’ve looked up to this person for your entire life. Now, they’re making decisions that you don’t agree with, and you don’t know what to do.
“For me, the problem I had was with my dad. I remember him using when I was young, but just barely. I think my mom tried to shield me from it as much as she could. By the time I was a teenager, the drug and alcohol use had gotten way out of control. It got to the point where my parents had to separate, and he still continued to use. Actually, I think that was when he started getting into the harder drugs. Heroin and crystal meth were his drugs of choice along with the alcohol, of course.

Food addiction is a daily struggle for many weight-loss surgery patients. It may be a week, a month, a year after surgery but for about 70 percent of those who undergo weight-loss surgery, it happens.
Of course, having the smaller stomach and/or rerouted intestines that come with WLS can be a great tool to help control your eating, but if you had trouble with food before surgery, there is high risk of eating compulsively, overeating or even just obsessing about food after surgery.

What Is Food Addiction
Food is essential to human survival and is an important aspect of our wellness, in addition to a means of pleasure and enjoyment. Food not only provides needed sustenance, it also adds a gratification factor through various tastes, smells, textures, etc. However, for many individuals, food addiction can become as serious as drugs are to a substance abuser.
For men and women suffering from an addiction to food, highly palatable foods trigger chemical reactions in the brain that induce feelings of pleasure and satisfaction. This reaction has been explained as comparable to an addicts response to their substance of choice, as it activates the same brain reward center.
Food addicts become dependent upon the good feelings that are obtained from consuming certain foods, which often perpetuates a continued need to eat, even when not hungry. These behaviors generate a vicious cycle. As the food addict continues to gorge upon foods that induce pleasurable feelings, they often overindulge and eat beyond what is required for satiety and normal nutrition.
This can lead to several physicals, emotional, and social consequences, such as digestive issues, heart disease, obesity, low-self esteem, depression, and isolation. A food addict will often re-engage in these destructive behaviors, even amidst undesired consequences, due to the need for induced feelings of pleasure.

Food addiction involves being addicted to food in the same way as someone with a substance use disorder demonstrates addiction to a particular substance .
People who have food addiction report that they are unable to control their consumption of certain foods.
However, people dont just become addicted to any food. Some foods are much more likely to cause symptoms of addiction than others.
They used the Yale Food Addiction Scale as a reference. Its the most commonly used tool to assess food addiction.

Does Your Parent Have An Alcohol Addiction Or Drug Addiction What To Look For
You may know that your parent’s drug abuse or alcohol abuse is a problem. However, you’re not really sure it qualifies as an actual addiction. Maybe your mom or dad doesn’t use all the time, but when they do, it’s a cause for concern. You’d be surprised how many people feel the exact same way that you do.
Alcohol abuse and drug abuse are very different from addiction. You can identify substance abuse by looking for:
