This larger category of diagnoses, which refers to general sex addiction, encompasses more than pornography.

    Make Meal Times Sacred

    Even if you dont start by changing the food on your plates, change the energy around mealtime. Make mealtime a sacred time for family and connection. Ban the screens and take the time to connect. Even with kids at a young age, you can begin your meal with a practice of gratitude for the time you get to spend together and consider all the people involved in getting the meal to the table. Know that though your kids do not need to eat everything on their plate, simply declaring themselves done eating does not excuse them from being present for the duration of the meal.

    If the person has guilt and shame over what they are doing, then it may be a harmful addiction, he says. Someone else may take a more liberal outlook, he says, and feel that their actions are not hurting anyone and not harming their relationship.

    Excessive pornography consumption could actually hurt a couples sexual relationship, Dr. McGee says. If you expect your partner to be like these beautiful people or for sex to be like what is in the movies, then you begin to want and expect thatand this can harm your relationship, he says.

    First Steps In Overcoming Food Addiction

    A few things can help prepare for giving up junk foods and make the transition easier:

    • Trigger foods. Write down a list of the foods that cause cravings and/or binges. These are the trigger foods to avoid completely.
    • Fast food places. Make a list of fast food places that serve healthy foods and note their healthy options. This may prevent a relapse when hungry and not in the mood to cook.
    • What to eat. Think about what foods to eat preferably healthy foods that are liked and already eaten regularly.
    • Pros and cons. Consider making several copies of the pro-and-con list. Keep a copy in the kitchen, glove compartment, and purse or wallet.

    Additionally, dont go on a diet. Put weight loss on hold for at least 13 months.

    Overcoming food addiction is difficult enough. Adding hunger and restrictions to the mix is likely to make things harder.

    After taking these preparatory steps, set a date in the near future like the coming weekend from which point onward the addictive trigger foods wont be touched again.


    To overcome food addiction, its important to plan. Make a list of trigger foods and know what is going to be eaten instead.

    I come from a dairy loving family to say the least. We followed doctors orders and had a glass of milk on the dinner table every night growing up. To this day my dad still drinks at least a glass a night of skim milk because its the best choice. Its not even an argument I want to get into there pick your battles as they say!

    In addition to our daily milk glass, I have always been a cheese loverand when I say cheese lover, I mean addict. In my mind every meal should have it in one form or another. And being a 4th generation Texan, Tex-Mex is the very source of cheesy inspiration I could have survived on for the rest of my life. Except I cant. In fact, dairy was playing its role in killing me.

    I realize this is a rather bold statement and really sounds dramatic to be honest. But its true. Nobody could have loved the stuff more than I did, but as time went on I saw the writing on the wall the wall being my inflamed brain.

    After a few years of really feeling helpless and often wanting to die, I finally started implementing additional dietary changes. You see, I had already been gluten free after my diagnosis with Hashimotos thyroid disease in 2008 and thought that my lifestyle was relatively healthy, at least compared to most people I knew. But I kept digging. I looked at veganism, grain free, dairy free, macrobiotic, paleo, primal, and so on.

    Get the junk food out of your house. This one is on you! You cant tell your kids they cant have something one week, and then have it show up in your home the next because you wanted some. Dont keep your house junk-free and then load up on junk food for birthday parties or special occasions. There are always healthful options. If you dont do things consistently, your kids will quickly recognize the loopholes in your methods and cartwheel on through them. They will know that if they ask enough times, you will break. Or even more challenging, they will never understand the why fully, and think your nos are arbitrary, leading to more tears and tantrums. If you want treats in the house, make them yourself, or even better, get your kids in on the fun.

    Its A Serious Problem

    Though the term addiction is often thrown around lightly, having a true addiction is a serious condition that typically requires treatment to overcome.

    The symptoms and thought processes associated with food addiction are similar to those of drug abuse. Its just a different substance, and the social consequences may be less severe.

    Food addiction can cause physical harm and lead to chronic health conditions like obesity and type 2 diabetes .

    In addition, it may negatively impact a persons self-esteem and self-image, making them unhappy with their body.

    As with other addictions, food addiction may take an emotional toll and increase a persons risk of premature death.


    Food addiction increases the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Excessive weight may also affect a persons self-esteem.

    Completely avoiding junk foods may seem impossible. Theyre everywhere and a major part of modern culture.

    However, in some cases, entirely abstaining from certain trigger foods can become necessary.

    Once the firm decision to never eat these foods again is made, avoiding them may become easier, as the need to justify eating or not eating them is eliminated. Cravings may also disappear or decrease significantly.

    Consider writing a list of pros and cons to think through the decision.

    Write everything down no matter how peculiar or vain it may seem. Then compare the two lists and ask if its worth it.
