“I’ve been building this collection around a conversation I want to have, that isn’t being had,” she said.
At the exhibit, Redler will have booklets with information on local resources she has utilized and heard about, from sober living houses to mental health centers to recovery programs.
One of those is the Charleston branch of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
Kelly Troyer, business development coordinator and one of the local branch’s two part-time employees, has been fighting for more federal legislation to support the unfolding crisis she witnesses firsthand every day.
NAMI was founded by four moms around a dinner table who all had adult sons with schizophrenia Troyer also has an adult son with schizophrenia.

The organization’s goals include advocating for those with mental health disorders, providing access to proper treatment programs, and training law enforcement on crisis intervention and de-escalation.
One program shares the warning signs of suicide. One educates on the new 9-8-8 suicide and crisis hotline. Another works with nonprofit WakeUp Carolina to deliver fentanyl test strips and Narcan, an emergency opioid overdose treatment. All are free.
“The fentanyl crisis is taking out so many people in our community,” said Troyer.
She just attended the funeral for one such person last week.

What Is The Difference Between Suboxone And Methadone
Methadone and Suboxone are both used to treat opioid addiction. The way each drug works is slightly different, leaving each drug to have pros and cons. Methadone has been available to the public since 1947, where Suboxone has only been available since 2002.
Both drugs are synthetic opioids. Methadone is a full opioid agonist, meaning it binds to the opioid receptors on the users brain and activates them. That being said, Methadone being administered in a controlled environment should always be safer then a patient purchasing painkillers, fentanyl, or heroin on the street.

For those without insurance, the cost can be a complete barrier to entry. And even for those with good insurance, a therapy appointment can still ring in at a $150 co-pay.
For those who need immediate help, this can be disastrous, she said.
“I’ve seen so many people in crisis,” Redler said. “And there are not enough resources for people who desperately need help.”
There are also few local treatment programs that address both issues that are intertwined for Redler. It took her years to realize that she couldn’t get over her substance use disorder without first addressing her PTSD.
Stigmas that still surround mental health and substance use disorders certainly don’t help the organizations that are in place to assist people. Those organizations are often in critical need of support, staffing and funding, she said.
Meanwhile, ongoing struggles and tragic deaths are becoming increasingly more common.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in three young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 have experienced a mental illness. Almost 4 million have had serious thoughts of suicide.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that annual drug overdoses have topped 100,000.

The 28-year-old, who has been fighting against addiction and trauma for about a decade, is baring her soul, her very personal story of drug and alcohol dependency and mental health struggles, in an upcoming art exhibit at .
“Cyber Gravestones” will premiere from 5-8 p.m. Oct. 14 at 2008 Wappoo Drive, with about a dozen pieces that are each accompanied by an essay describing a particular moment in Redler’s journey toward recovery and advocacy.

“The more of us that are transparent and talk about it, the more we ,” Troyer said. “Of course there are going to be people who will be very judgmental of us. I dont care about them, and she doesnt either. We care about helping people.”
Plus, art can be a powerful form of therapy of its own. Troyer herself plays the piano.
“How we express ourselves through art and music is really important in recovery for people who have alcohol or drug addictions or mental health struggles,” said Troyer. “It’s a positive coping skill.”
For Redler, art is therapy and advocacy in one.
” helps the public get it that recovery is not about a bad person trying to get good, its about a person with a medical condition trying to get well,” said Johnson. “She’s raising awareness, and putting a face on recovery.”
She hopes her art will help others find their own.
