Alcohol Drugs And Unprotected Sex

National Center on Substance Abuse and Child Welfare Informational Motion Graphic

The Center for Consumer Freedom point out that

…a CASA study financed by the Kaiser Family Foundation concluded that a whopping 89 percent of teens who used drugs or alcohol were “at risk” of having unprotected sex. A look at the original survey data, however, reveals that only five percent of high school seniors had actually engaged in unprotected sex after using drugs or alcohol. This, of course, was before CASA and Kaiser cooked the books. In order to inflate its statistics by 1,790 percent, the 15-17 age group was lumped together with those between 18 and 24. In making this “adjustment,” they also included married couples! Lastly, they made allowances for student’s vague guesses about whether “people my age” just might mix drinking and sex. The result: the five percent of 15-17 year-olds who actually engaged in high-risk behavior were ignored in favor of the 89 percent of 15-17 year-olds who thought someone in their age group “might” do so. Guess which number made the evening news? 8

How To Find The Best Drug Addiction Rehab Center Near Me

If youre in search for the best drug rehabilitation center near you, youll want to be thorough while searching for the substance abuse treatment program that is right for you. Not all treatment facilities are equal, so its important that you know what youre looking for. Not everyone will benefit from the same type of rehab so some priorities may depend on the individuals preferences, but some standard things to look for include:

  • Treatment program accreditations and certifications.
  • Appropriate education, experience, and certifications for staff members.
  • Individualized treatment plans.
  • Experience in treating your specific addiction.
  • Experience in treating addiction and a co-occurring mental health disorder, if necessary.
  • Empathetic, nonjudgmental, compassionate staff members.
  • Staff trained in cultural sensitivity.

You may also want to consider a facility that shares your philosophy. For instance, some people prefer faith-based rehabs if their religion is important to them. Others may choose to enroll in a holistic treatment center that utilizes alternative and complementary practices, such as acupuncture, meditation, and yoga. Regardless of the treatment program you choose, its important to confirm that it possesses the above-mentioned qualities.

Athletes Mental Health And Wellbeing Often Overlooked

Criticism from University District neighbors over substance abuse treatment center

Every year the NFL sees its fair share of trauma in 2021 alone there were 387 documented injuries across the league between concussions, MCL, and ACL tears. More recently, after Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa experienced several back-to-back concussions without appropriate league-mandated support and response, the NFL has recently amended its benching policy for head hits. Due to the nature of the sport and the culture surrounding it, many players feel uncomfortable disclosing any symptoms of illness or injury too often theyre expected to man up and push through it. The same can likely be said for the athletes mental health, especially considering the pedestals theyre placed on.

Principles Of Effective Drug Addiction Treatment

These 13 principles of effective drug addiction treatment were developed based on three decades of scientific research. Research shows that treatment can help drug-addicted individuals stop drug use, avoid relapse and successfully recover their lives.

  • Addiction is a complex, but treatable, disease that affects brain function and behavior.
  • No single treatment is appropriate for everyone.
  • Treatment needs to be readily available.
  • Effective treatment attends to multiple needs of the individual, not just his or her drug abuse.
  • Remaining in treatment for an adequate period of time is critical.
  • Counseling individual and/or group and other behavioral therapies are the most commonly used forms of drug abuse treatment.
  • Medications are an important element of treatment for many patients, especially when combined with counseling and other behavioral therapies.
  • An individuals treatment and services plan must be assessed continually and modified as necessary to ensure it meets his or her changing needs.
  • Many drug-addicted individuals also have other mental disorders.
  • Medically assisted detoxification is only the first stage of addiction treatment and by itself does little to change long-term drug abuse.
  • Treatment does not need to be voluntary to be effective.
  • Drug use during treatment must be monitored continuously, as lapses during treatment do occur.

The Recovery Research Institute is a non-profit research institute of Mass General’s Department of Psychiatry and Harvard Medical School ) located in Boston. In recognition of the increased public health and broader societal harms related to substance use disorders and the lack of emphasis on research pertaining to how individuals achieve remission and sustain long-term recovery, the Recovery Research institute was created in 2012 under the direction of John F. Kelly, PhD, with a goal of enhancing the public health impact of addiction recovery science through the summary, synthesis and distribution of scientific findings and the conduct of novel research investigation.

The Recovery Research Institute is home to the Recovery Research Review, a free electronic monthly publication containing contextualized summaries and syntheses of the latest research in addiction treatment and recovery. In addition, the RRI serves as a teaching and training center for promising researchers in addiction, funding two to three postdoctoral fellows each year.

In research for 2016, the RRI conducted the first study on the prevalence and pathways of addiction recovery using a nationally representative sample of 50,000 US adults, and the first ever study to characterize participation and benefits of online recovery support networks using the social network site InTheRooms.com.

This Is Your Brain On Drugs

Analysis of research suggested that consumers decided about possibly doing drugs based on two basic considerations: the risk involved, and the perception of social disapproval. And campaigns were targeted towards both mindsets: that using drugs was risky and that it was uncool among peer groups.

The organization first entered the wider public consciousness in 1987, with its This Is Your Brain on Drugs broadcast and print public service advertisements . The advertisement used the analogy that if a personâs brain is an egg, then using illegal drugs would be like frying it. This advertisement was shown repeatedly on broadcast media to the extent that it became a hallmark for the organization. Time magazine described the advertisement as âiconicâ. It has been recognized by marketing professionals as âone of the most influentialâ ad campaigns in the history of marketing, according to numerous sources, and has been applauded as one of the âmost unforgettable images in modern American advertising.âTV Guide named it as one of the âtop 100 ads of all timeâ. The ad became the organizationâs âcalling cardâ, according to one account.

There were other commercials with a bite, too. For example, in one commercial an angry father grills his son about where he learned to smoke pot, and his teenage son retorts ironically: âYOU, alright!? I learned it by watching you!â with the narrator concluding, âParents who use drugs have children who use drugs.â

Liv Center: Serving Black Men Dealing With Substance Abuse

The Black-owned center is especially focused on helping Black men recover, who are often treated like criminals instead of sick patients.

By Ashley Winters, Word in Black

Living In Victory Recovery Sober Living is helping those impacted by substance use fight against drug and alcohol addiction at its new rehabilitation facility in the Old North neighborhood.

Owners Derrick and Cameo Jones opened the center in August and say they come from families of addiction. Based on their experiences, they realize many Black families dont have the resources to help loved ones fight addiction.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , in 2020, overdose deaths increased by 44% for Black people. Also, the overdose death rate among Black men 65 years and older was nearly seven times that of White males 65 years and older. Black people ages 15 to 24 years old experienced the largest rate increase of 86% compared with changes seen in other age or race groups during 20192020.

It is so unfortunate that addicts are treated like criminals instead of sick patients. Especially in the Black community compared to how Black addicts are treated in the judicial system compared to white addicts.

CAMEO JONES, CO-OWNER OF LIV CENTER

Our Black men are literally an endangered species, said Cameo Jones. Derrick follows up saying their facility in Old North is needed to help more young men, especially young Black men.
