FAA is based on the Twelve-Step Fellowship that encourages recovering from food addiction one day at a time. They are not affiliated with any treatment facilities, specific diet or weight loss programs, or religious organizations.

According to the FAA website, food addiction manifests itself in the uncontrollable craving for excess food that follows the ingestion of refined carbohydrates, primarily sugar and flour substances that are quickly metabolized and turned into sugar in the bloodstream. Due to those uncontrollable cravings, a food addict’s quality of life deteriorates when he or she eats sugar, flour, or wheat. It can deteriorate physically, emotionally, socially, and/or spiritually.

With that in mind, they say food addiction falls into four symptom categories, including physical, emotional, social, spiritual. Meeting times are used to discuss these symptoms and ways to recover.

In addition to meetings, FAA provides members with tools of recovery meant to supplement meetings. These include abstinence, FAA food plan, sponsorship, FAA service opportunities FAAs Twelve Steps, FAAs Twelve Traditions, and FAAs promise.

What Is The Difference Between Food Addicts Anonymous And Overeaters Anonymous

Now that we have covered the 12 steps of Overeaters Anonymous group, lets talk about how these 12 steps are different from the Food Addiction Anonymous groups.

Food Addicts Anonymous is another one of the various 12-step programs, and this particular program was started by Judith C. in Florida back in 1987.

The primary difference between Food Addicts Anonymous and Overeaters Anonymous is that the FAA believes some people become addicted to certain carbohydrates and sugars and must abstain from sugar.

For example FAA has, in its food menu, advised members to be 100% abstinent from sugar, flour and wheat.

This includes sugar substitutes and artificial sweeteners. In addition, flours that are not made from wheat and dietary fats are also restricted.

This call for abstinence from sugar, flour and wheat and other foods is the major difference between FAA and Overeaters Anonymous.

Potential Pitfalls Of Food Addicts Anonymous

FAA is not the right fit for everyone. Its important that you read through all of the material online before attending a meeting. Since meetings are led by a volunteer, there is not enough support for anyone needing higher-level care, as you would find in a support group led by a mental health therapist.

FAA believes food addiction cannot be treated through willpower or therapy alone. If you are currently in therapy with a mental health expert, this is something you should discuss with them.

FAA is based on the Twelve-Step model, so talk of God or a higher power does weave its way into meetings. The program relies on your ability to discuss personal details in a group setting. It also depends upon the strength of sponsorship, which may not be a healthy relationship for people who are co-dependent. If any parts of the Twelve-Step model are not a good fit for you, the program may not work.

And finally, the rigid FAA food plan is not right for everyone. If you have an eating disorder or in recovery from an eating disorder, talk to your doctor or treatment team before committing to FAA.

Newcomers may choose to be guided through the steps by experienced members of Drug Addicts Anonymous who have had deep and effective spiritual experiences as the result of working the steps themselves.

Once we were able to admit that we had been defeated by addiction, all that was required to begin the program was willingness, honesty, and open-mindedness.

While the classification of being addicted to food can seem relatively new and difficult to diagnose, there are scientific tools developed by researchers to further obtain insight into the construct of being addicted to food. The most commonly used scale applied towards identifying matching criteria of being addicted to food is the Yale Food Addiction Scale, a standardized tool constructed in 2008 by Ashley Gerhardt and associates.

The tool was designed to identify those who demonstrate symptoms of dependence on certain types of foods, such as foods higher in salt, fat or sugar3. These tool has been instrumental in helping professionals identify problem behaviors in feeding behaviors similar to that encountered in other forms of addiction3.

  • We admit that we are powerless over food that our lives have become unmanageable.
  • We have come to believe that a power greater than ourselves can restore us to sanity.
  • We made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understand Him.
  • Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
  • We admitted to God to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
  • We are entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
  • We humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
  • Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.
  • Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
  • Continent to take personal inventory and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.
  • Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
  • Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to compulsive overeaters and practice these principles in all our affairs.

    What Is An Oa Meeting Like

    First of all: a deep breath. Theres nothing to be nervous about. You will be welcome. Youll find you are not alone anymore. Everyone at the meeting knows where youre coming from about food. Heres what happens at a typical meeting, but all meetings are a little different.

    Once youve found a meeting that you want to check out, you show up. Set aside an hour for your meeting. Consider this you time. Youll meet others like you with a simple first-name introduction and be genuinely welcomed. Get yourself settled with the group to enjoy various readings, members sharing their journeys, and learning more about OA. Participate as much or as little as you want. You are welcome to share but you dont have to. If you have questions, you can talk with individual members after the meeting. Congratulationsyou completed your first meeting!

    But, wait. What about the weigh-in? What about paying a membership fee? Theres none of that. When people become members, they often voluntarily contribute, but its never required. We promise.
