Intervention: Jesses Drug Addiction Fueled by Difficult Past | A& E

One of the most powerful forms of support, drug addiction groups provide the immediate, supportive environment you need if you are thinking about using. Because those who have drug addictions tend to carry a significant amount of self-blame, this environment can provide immediate help from others who know how withdrawal feels and how challenging it is to live clean.

Are Online Alcohol Support Groups Right For Me

Showing up to a support group, whether online or in person, is a big step toward long-term recovery. If you have a mild or moderate AUD, a support group can supply you with self-efficacy tools as well as a sponsor or mentor.

Support groups can provide a steady structure. They can also be beneficial for helping prevent relapse in people with AUD who have completed an inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation program.

If you have severe AUD, a rehabilitation center can provide around-the-clock care and medical attention. Once youre on the path to recovery, an online support group can help you garner a support system.

Gambling Addiction Support Groups

Gambling Addiction

Gambling becomes an addiction when it is something you or a loved one cannot control and when it begins to affect a persons financial, familial, social, recreational, educational, or occupational functioning.

People with a gambling addiction often think of themselves as morally weak or just no good.5 Instead of viewing yourself in this harsh, critical light, you might find it helpful to see yourself as someone suffering from a form of illness. Various 12-step support groups view gambling addiction as a progressive disease that cannot be cured but may be halted and managed with the proper support and education.

The primary 12-step support group for people suffering from gambling addiction is:

For almost any behavioral addiction, theres a 12-step group. Some of these 12-step groups include:

  • Spenders Anonymous: For anyone unable to control their spending, this 12-step group offers support as you regain control of your finances and helps you establish a better relationship with money. Cons Of Online Support Group

Though there are plenty of advantages to holding meetings online, for many people, there is no replacement for face-to-face relationships. There are a lot of different opinions about online interaction. Studies have been conducted on the issue with varying results. Some people find that they are much more comfortable interacting online, while others feel that they cant make a real connection by chatting with people.

If they are easily accessible, in-person meetings may very well be a better option for many people. The opportunity to form a network of people on their sobriety journey who are going through the same experiences, is an invaluable resource for many While online groups may be right for some, there are some disadvantages to them as well, including:

It may be best to try both online and in-person meetings to figure out which approach fits you best. For many people, using both online and in-person support combines the best of both worlds and provides a wealth of resources to help them in their continued recovery from addiction to drugs or alcohol.

  • Volunteers serve as phone contacts for those who need more individualized support

  • Some may find it difficult to commit to the programs 12 Acceptance Statements

Women for Sobriety was founded in 1975 as a not-for-profit organization helping women recover from substance use. The organization offers both online and in-person support groups run by certified moderators and chat leaders. If you wish to speak to someone one-on-one, there are also phone volunteers who can help you.

The program’s foundation comes from a sociologist who believed that addiction among women could be traced to loss of identity, competing roles in society, and low self-esteem, depression, and guilt.

Some of the group’s strategies include positive reinforcement, cognitive restructuring, relaxation, diet, and exercise. With these tactics, there is a focus on self-empowerment to overcome addiction.

The program is based on 13 Acceptance Statements encouraging spiritual and emotional growth. When these mantras are internalized, they provide a new way of thinking. Members are asked to wake up 15 minutes early each day, go over the 13 acceptance statements, and think about each one. Then, they are to choose one statement to focus on for the day.

There is no cost to attend meetings. However, silent donations are collected at all meetings, and the suggested amount is about $2 to $5.

Behavioral Addictions

While other behavioral addictions were not included in the DSM-V, many experts in the field of mental and behavioral health acknowledge that addiction is not restricted to substances.

According to a paper published in 2016 in the American Medical Association Journal of Ethics, 12-step groups are a useful form of help for people struggling with a wide range of addictions, especially when combined with other types of treatment.2 Each 12-step program, whether designed for people suffering from work addiction or those with eating disorders, is based on the same principles and rooted in the concept of peer support.

The first step in this type of program is admitting that your addiction has taken control of your life. Program participants also:

  • Admit their wrongdoings.
  • Work on their shortcomings.
  • Use prayer or meditation to improve their situations.

Those who have been in recovery for a long time are encouraged to help others use these principles to gain control over their addiction and often become sponsors.

Most 12-step behavioral addiction support groups follow the same structure. Group members attend regular meetings so they can share their successes and shortcomings with one another. During these meetings, participants share only their first names, which helps new members feel more comfortable about joining the group. Anonymity also protects people from exploitation by other group members.

Again, as with treatment, individual needs vary, so its good to be aware that there are many options when it comes to group supports. For those with co-occurring mental health issues, Dual Recovery Anonymous was formed specifically to address both and covers alcohol as well as other substances.

One can also find meetings designed for specific populations such as male, female, LGBTQ, young persons or professionals so as to make the experience as comfortable as possible. It may take some trial and error, but there is likely an option out there to suit ones needs.

The above groups, along with others, all offer some form of online meetings, which is especially helpful for anyone who may not have access to transportation or for whom a local in-person meeting isnt available.

Its important to understand that these support programs are peer-led, and as such, they arent a substitute for individual counseling or group therapy. Recovery plans often include support groups in addition to regular counseling, group therapy and ongoing medical attention.

Recovery takes a village, and group support can be a great place to find people whove struggled too, and have found ways to stay in recovery.

Online Support Groups: Pros And Cons

Free Support Groups for Addiction & Mental Health Anyone can Attend

Online support groups are very similar to the regular kind, with one of the significant differences being the fact that everything is held from the comfort of ones home. By using video conference calls, the group can be moderated and carried out precisely as it might have been in person.

Online support groups can be a lifesaver for people who may have difficulty leaving their homes to find a physical support group venue. Not only that, but some people may feel safer or less anxious when engaging in a group meeting from a familiar, comfortable location, such as their bedroom. It is also very pertinent in the wake of COVID.

Online groups can be pretty beneficial as those participating dont need to worry about the arrangements for transportation and the stress that comes with that. It also makes it easier to find a support group that works best for you instead of relying on the closest ones.

However, the social setting and contact with others are absent in online groups. Listening to support and advice from other people going through a condition tends to be more impactful when they are there in person. The support shown by other members may come off more flat than intended too. It should also always be kept in mind that technical issues can bring down an entire meeting.
