New Medication For Meth Addiction

Funding For Meth Medication

New meth addiction treatment finally available

There is some funding available for research of MAT drugs for meth. This includes a 1 million dollar grant from the National Institute of Health. This grant goes towards research of MAT drugs for many substances, including meth.

More funding could help MAT for meth become a reality sooner. Sometimes all that is needed for a drug to be pushed through the approval process faster is the funding to do the research.

What Happens During Meth Detox

The main goal of meth detox is to make the patient feel safe and comfortable. Patients are under 24/7 medical supervision to monitor for health complications and severe withdrawal symptoms. To keep patients comfortable, medical detox often uses medications such as antidepressants.

Meth detox generally has three stages. First, patients go through a thorough evaluation and health review. This helps the doctors know how to manage your withdrawal symptoms.

Stabilization is the second stage of meth detox. Most patients arrive at detox at the peak of withdrawal. For this reason, once the evaluation is done, treatment immediately begins as withdrawal symptoms improve, a patients treatment changes.

The last stage of meth detox is transitioning into a treatment program. Many people think detox is a treatment, but it just rids the body of meth. It doesnt treat the causes of meth addiction, such as childhood trauma or abuse.

Dopamine D2 Partial Agonists

Dopamine D2-receptor partial agonists have also been proposed as possible treatments for stimulant dependence . Aripiprazole, a second generation antipsychotic, acts as a partial agonist at both the dopamine D2 and 5-HT1A receptors . Two human laboratory studies showed that aripiprazole significantly attenuated the discriminative stimulus and subjective rated effects of orally administrated d-amphetamine . However, in a more recent study , aripiprazole treatment increased some of the rewarding and stimulatory effects produced by acute methamphetamine, suggesting that 15 mg aripiprazole is unlikely to be efficacious for the treatment of methamphetamine dependence. Supporting these findings, a recent controlled trial comparing aripiprazole, methylphenidate and placebo had to be terminated prematurely. An interim analysis showed that aripiprazole-treated subjects had significantly more amphetamine-positive urines than those treated with placebo .

The Biden administration will use federal courts and health programs to expand the use of medication to treat substance use disorders in pregnant women, according to a report by the White House released Friday. The plan is part of the administrations broader effort to combat a drug crisis that now kills more than 100,000 Americans annually.

Under the new initiative, the Justice Department, the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Indian Health Service will be responsible for improving womens access to medicines like buprenorphine and methadone. These treatments have been controversial, but are increasingly being embraced as a scientifically proven way to reduce dependency and save lives.

Opioid use disorder among pregnant women has more than quadrupled in recent years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and is associated with low birth weight, preterm labor and miscarriage. Pregnant women are more likely to die of a drug overdose than the average woman of childbearing age, but less likely to be accepted for appointments with buprenorphine providers.

Naltrexone And Bupropion For Meth Addiction Recovery

Weve covered the history of naltrexone for treating substance use disorders, but bupropion has its own recovery applications. While it is an antidepressant and thus usually used in cases of chronic depression or anxiety, bupropion has also proven effective as a tool in helping people quit smoking nicotine. And as new evidence shows, its ability to balance brain chemistry may significantly help people receiving treatment at meth rehab centers.

In the study referenced above, 403 adult volunteers were examined between the years 2017 and 2019. For each volunteer, they underwent study for two six-week periods. During each stage, volunteers who received treatment were administered an injection of naltrexone once every three weeks and took extended-release bupropion every day. To compare the effectiveness of this new treatment, a control group was given placebo shots and pills to take every day during the same period.

This study was conducted double blind, meaning that not even the researchers knew who had taken the real medication and who took the placebos. Steps like this help ensure that researcher bias does not taint the results, and they make the findings of this study all the more exciting.

Calaim To Pay For Contingency Management Treatment

Contingency management is so effective at helping people with stimulant use disorder that California is set to become the first state Medicaid program to pay for the treatment. The pilot program, set to launch by early 2023, is part of the CalAIM initiative, a multiyear plan to overhaul the states Medicaid program. Working with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services , the California Department of Health Care Services received authorization for what theyre calling the Recovery Incentives Program. DHCS estimates the program will cost $58.5 million which includes federal funding.

Under CalAIM, DHCS secured approval from CMS for the first time to cover contingency management as a benefit in the Medicaid program, said Tyler Sadwith, deputy director of behavioral health at DHCS. Its really significant.

The contingency management program will initially be piloted through 24 county behavioral health agencies already participating in the states Drug Medi-Cal Organized Delivery System , which launched in 2015 to expand and improve substance use disorder treatment through Medi-Cal. Those 24 counties represent a large share of both rural and urban geographic areas and include 88% of the Medi-Cal population.

How To Get Off Meth

New treatment for meth addiction

As weve seen, even the best results do not mean that there is a magic solution that helps people quit meth in 100% of cases. However, individuals often show great results in quitting meth when they combine different evidence-based treatment options.

For example, someone taking naltrexone and bupropion for meth addiction may only expect an 11.4% of staying off meth at 12 weeks. But their odds can go up when they add in other treatment options, like cognitive behavioral therapy and group therapy activities. And this is the real benefit of many meth addiction treatment programs, since they provide a safe and drug-free environment to pursue various types of addiction treatment.

Why are multiple treatment modalities necessary? Well, mental health and addiction are often closely connected, and in most cases, no single medication can completely resolve a mental health condition. Rather, people often require a lot of time and professional guidance to sort through mental health issues, and the same rule applies to addiction. At Ridgeview Behavioral Hospital, this kind of comprehensive care is exactly what we provide in our treatment program for co-occurring disorders.

Our program for co-occurring disorders provides the skills that help people quit and stay off of meth. By addressing underlying mental health issues, we restore sobriety as well as mental stability. And this is important, since meth psychosis is a mental health and addiction issue that plagues many meth users.

What Is The Most Effective Treatment For Meth

Meth is a highly addictive stimulant that can have severe effects on physical health, as well as mental health and psychological well-being.

Risks and dangers of meth use include:

  • meth dependence
  • increased risk of infectious disease
  • mental health issues

Overcoming meth addiction is possible with the right support.

If you have medical problems, or have a severe meth use disorder, finding an inpatient or residential treatment program that can offer a high level of support may be recommended.

Other Drugs For Meth Addiction Treatment

There are still no FDA-approved drugs that can reverse the effects of meth addiction. Despite the promise of the naltrexone-bupropion combination therapy, more research is needed to confirm its efficacy. If doctors would prescribe these two drugs for meth addiction, it is still considered off-label use.

Most of the time, medications are used during meth detox, which is often the first phase of meth addiction treatment. The goal of detox is to flush out all traces of the drug from your body. At the end of detox, which usually lasts 5 to 7 days, your body will be able to tolerate the complete absence of meth.

Several unpleasant withdrawal symptoms, including anxiety, depression, exhaustion, and a strong urge to take meth, are common during the detox process. The good news is that supportive medications are helpful in reducing the unpleasant side effects of detox.

NIDA researchers are working hard to develop medicines more appropriate for addiction therapy. Thankfully, there are numerous alternative drugs available today. Treatment alleviates withdrawal symptoms, and while there is no FDA-approved medication for meth addiction, there are numerous others that can either lessen cravings for meth or reduce consumption of the drug.

  • GABA-ergic drugs
  • Dopamine-partial agonists
  • Serotonergic agents

Despite the fact that most research studies do not find much success, there is encouraging evidence that these three types of drugs are the best in helping overcome crystal meth addiction.

What Are The Treatment Options For Methamphetamine Use

There are several different evidence-based treatments that exist for methamphetamine use disorder. Although the treatments well list here have all been found to be effective, what works for someone else might not work for you. Here are some of the most commonly used methods to treat methamphetamine use disorder. If youre trying to beat an addiction to methamphetamine, talk to your medical provider about starting any one of these programs.

Animal Studies On Analgesic Effects

Methamphetamine Addiction Treatment

In animal studies, the researchers found that 9087 and other optimized derivatives showed analgesic effects in mouse neuropathic, inflammatory, and acute pain models.

Moreover, both intravenous and oral administration of 9087 and PS75 produced analgesic effects in mouse models. These compounds, however, needed higher concentrations to produce these analgesic effects than dexmedetomidine.

Although the compounds were less potent than dexmedetomidine, they did not have sedative effects at high concentrations.

Blocking the 2a-adrenergic receptor reduced the analgesic effects of these compounds in the mouse models of pain. This indicates that the analgesic effects of the compounds identified via the virtual screen were largely mediated via the 2a-adrenergic receptor.

Still, the researchers cautioned that these compounds could also produce these analgesic effects by binding to other receptors.

Additionally, 9087 did not produce common side effects associated with 2a-adrenergic receptor agonists, such as weight gain or constipation.

Why Is Meth So Addictive

Meth use, like other amphetamines, results in increased activity, decreased appetite, enhanced sociability and talkativeness, and can induce feelings of pleasure and a sense of well-being. A key difference between meth and amphetamines, however, is that greater amounts of the drug pass into the brain when compared with a similar dose of amphetamines, making it a more potent stimulant.

When the drug is smoked or injected, the effects are felt extremely quickly causing an immediate and intense, but short-lived, rush.1 Snorting or oral ingestion produces effects of euphoria within several minutes but not an intense rush.

These pleasurable effects last longer than cocaine but are still somewhat fleeting, and users often try to maintain the high by taking more of the drug, sometimes foregoing food, sleep and other responsibilities as they binge on the drug over several days.4

Taking meth causes an increase in levels of dopamine, a brain chemical that plays an important role in motivation and the reinforcement of rewards.1,2

One of the challenges of using naltrexone to treat opioid addiction is that, because of the way the medication works in the brain, people cant have used opioids for several days before getting the injection. Otherwise, naltrexone can cause debilitating withdrawal symptoms.

But because methamphetamine interacts with the brain differently than opioids, people who use meth but not opioids should be able to be treated with naltrexone without having to wait, said Trivedi, who also consults for pharmaceutical companies, including Alkermes, the maker of Vivitrol.

Results Of Treating Meth Addiction With Mat

That study, funded by the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse, showed that people who received both bupropion and naltrexone for meth addiction had better treatment outcomes than those who did not.

The study was conducted over two years, from 2017 to 2019. Participants included 403 adult volunteers with meth use disorder, ranging in age from 18 to 65 years old.

It found that the combined use of bupropion and naltrexone could help:

  • reduce cravings for meth
  • promote improved quality of life
  • prevent relapse to meth use

Medications Are No Substitute For Human Support

The field of pharmacological treatment approaches is progressive and may offer real benefits, but medications will never be a substitute for active support. Group and individual counseling are an integral part of crystal meth addiction treatment. Addiction support groups, family involvement, and intensive cognitive-behavioral therapy are all equally important.

  • Cognitive-behavior therapy : Often used in conjunction with counseling, CBT attempts to unravel the root of addictive behavior. This is an intensive process that takes a lot of personal transparency. During CBT, you will learn about triggers and coping mechanisms to successfully battle addiction.
  • Family support: An integral part of addiction recovery, family support plays a key role in successfully becoming sober.
  • Group and individual counseling: Social support and one-on-one therapy are essential to overcoming meth addiction.
  • 12-Step program involvement: Being with peers who understand the challenges of addiction can help you stay and remain motivated to be sober.
