The New Residential Treatment Center At Veterans Village Of San Diego Is The City And County Of San Diegos Latest Effort In Helping Chronically Homeless People Episcopal Community Services Will Operate The 11

A long-awaited safe haven will open by the end of the year to provide a residential treatment program for homeless people dealing with mental issues and addictions, county and city of San Diego officials announced Thursday.

The 11-room program will be in Veterans Village of San Diego and provide treatment for up to 22 people by staff members from Family Health Centers of San Diego and Episcopal Community Services, which has experience in the field as the operator of the Uptown Safe Haven, a residential facility that provides transitional housing and services to chronically homeless adults with mental health issues.

The small facility will target a homeless population typically considered the hardest to reach and is the first in the county connected to outreach services and a shelter specifically focused on helping people with addictions and mental issues.

We know what works, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria said Thursday at a press conference and tour of the facility. Outreach, shelter, housing, treatment and prevention. Were going to continue to do all those things until we get back to the place where we want to be, which is to not have larger numbers of people living on the street.

Every person living on the streets in San Diego County is not going through the same situation, San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chair Nathan Fletcher said. Different types of solutions are needed and this program is one of them.

Peer Support Team Created To Help First Responders

Being a first responder is hard work, and the job can take a huge toll on a personâs mental health.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, first responders experience elevated levels of anxiety, depression, PTSD, suicidal ideation and attempts, addiction, and divorce. One county in New York is working to address these issues with the formation of a new, multi-agency Peer Support Team.

In Saratoga County, a trained team of 50 first responders, across multiple agencies and responder disciplines, can now offer peer-to-peer support.

âYou have to separate yourself from whatâs going on. Itâs a defense mechanism that we use, but unfortunately, it all catches up to you ⦠Some people are really good at dealing with stress, some people need a little bit of help,â said Clifton Park Halfmoon EMS Paramedic Supervisor Christopher Congero.

The county is also offering group support, bringing in mental health professionals to assist after large-scale traumatic incidents.

âWe think that the model we built is going to be a lot more sustainable, productive and more efficient than a traditional model which is just based in a department and doesnât have a lot of mental health involvement,â said Saratoga County EMS Coordinator Mike McEvoy.

McEvoy has been in emergency services for three decades.

McEvoy says while itâs not every day youâre responding to a traumatic incident, the less severe calls have an impact, too.
