Making Alcohol Problems Worse
Exaggerating the extent of alcohol problems actually makes them worse. For example, when young people go away to college they generally believe that the incidence of drinking and of heavy drinking is much higher than it really is. In order to fit in, they tend to try to conform to this inflated perception of what other students are doing.

The most consistently successful way to reduce the incidence of drinking and of heavy drinking is to conduct an anonymous survey on campus and then to publicize the results. When students discover that most students consume less alcohol and do so less frequently than they thought, they promptly modify their own behavior by drinking less and less often. This “social norms marketing technique” is also being used in high schools, middle schools, and even throughout the entire state of Montana.
Therefore, by consistently exaggerating the extent of drinking and of alcohol abuse, CASA actually contributes to the problem. CASA is a very big part of the problem rather than the solution.
It’s a shame that some people will do almost anything, including putting young peoples’ lives at risk, for power and a big salary. Perhaps CASA should be called the Center for Alcohol Statistics Abuse.

Forty million Americans ages 12 and older, or more than 1 in 7 people, abuse or are addicted to nicotine, alcohol or other drugs. This is more than the number of Americans with heart conditions , diabetes or cancer .
Like diabetes or cancer, addiction is a disease. I know thats a controversial statement, but according to The Center, while the first use may be by choice, once the brain has been changed by addiction, most experts believe that the person loses control of their behavior. In that way, its just like heart disease, diabetes and some forms of cancer that involve personal choices . The disease is what happens in the body as a result of those choices. And while psychological and environmental factors may determine when an individual starts to use substances, genetic factors appear to have more of an influence in determining who progresses from substance use to addiction.
Thats where The Center comes in. Its a science-based, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization founded in 1992 by former U.S. Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare Joseph A. Califano, Jr. The organizations mission is to find, promote and enact the necessary solutions to end Americas deadly addiction crisis.

She states it was “one of the most devastating things to happen. It was very difficult. Theres a huge amount of stigma around this disease. Thats why fewer than 20% of the people who need help get it.”

Analysis of research suggested that consumers decided about possibly doing drugs based on two basic considerations: the risk involved, and the perception of social disapproval. And campaigns were targeted towards both mindsets: that using drugs was risky and that it was uncool among peer groups.
The organization first entered the wider public consciousness in 1987, with its This Is Your Brain on Drugs broadcast and print public service advertisements . The advertisement used the analogy that if a person’s brain is an egg, then using illegal drugs would be like frying it. This advertisement was shown repeatedly on broadcast media to the extent that it became a hallmark for the organization. Time magazine described the advertisement as “iconic”. It has been recognized by marketing professionals as “one of the most influential” ad campaigns in the history of marketing, according to numerous sources, and has been applauded as one of the “most unforgettable images in modern American advertising.”TV Guide named it as one of the “top 100 ads of all time”. The ad became the organization’s “calling card”, according to one account.
There were other commercials with a bite, too. For example, in one commercial an angry father grills his son about where he learned to smoke pot, and his teenage son retorts ironically: “YOU, alright!? I learned it by watching you!” with the narrator concluding, “Parents who use drugs have children who use drugs.”

Personal Data Breach At The National Center Of Addiction Medicine Administrative Fine
On 5 March 2020, the Icelandic Supervisory Authority took the decision to impose an administrative fine of ISK 3.000.000 on the National Center of Addiction Medicine in a case relating to a personal data breach.
The National Center of Addiction Medicine is an NGO that operates a detoxification clinic and four inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation centers, as well as a center for family services and a social center in Iceland. Its services are delivered by a staff of medical doctors, psychologists, registered nurses, nurse practitioners and licensed counselors.
The breach occurred when a former employee of the National Center of Addiction Medicine received boxes containing what were supposed to be personal belongings that he had left there. However, it turned out that the boxes contained patient data as well, including health records of 252 former patients and records containing the names of approximately 3.000 people who had attended rehabilitation for alcohol and substance abuse.
After carrying out an investigation of the data breach, the SA concluded that the breach was a result of a lack of implementation of appropriate data protection policies and appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect the data by the controller. The lack of appropriate measures to protect the personal data therefore constituted violations of, inter alia, Art. 5f and Art. 32 of the GDPR.
