Family Counseling + Therapy

The main goal of family therapy for drug addiction is to create an environment where communication can occur without judgment, hostility, or blame that often occurs within a family.

Family therapy is a type of group problem-solving that aims to improve communication and relationships between the patient, their family, and sometimes friends. The therapist is with the family as they learn to communicate with each other differently, especially with the addict when s/he is using.

The family can learn to reduce their enabling behavior or rally together and support each other during tough times. The patient also learns how to deal with their addiction and maintain sobriety while interacting with the family.

The non-traditional approach helps people deal more effectively with these struggles. Uab Ed Launches Opioid Overdose Program

Erik Hess, M.D.Alabama hospital emergency departments have become all too familiar with patients suffering from opioid overdose.

The state leads the nation in opioid prescriptions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Jefferson County alone saw 98 deaths from heroin and 104 from fentanyl use in 2017. Opioid abuse, whether street drugs or prescriptions, is rampant.

Emergency departments are the tip of the spear where societal problems meet healthcare, said Erik Hess, M.D., vice chair for research for the University of Alabama at BirminghamDepartment of Emergency Medicine. The nations opioid epidemic plays out every day in our emergency departments.

The UAB Department of Emergency Medicine is launching a new initiative to help patients with opioid use disorders get appropriate therapy and referral for further assistance in an effort to put a dent in the epidemic. The program, called the ED MAT, or Medication Assisted Treatment Protocol, is funded by a $1.5 million grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Program partners include the UAB Center for AIDS Research and the Jefferson County Department of Health, which has undertaken a county-wide effort to coordinate care for persons with opioid use disorder.

Buprenorphine/naloxone, also known as Suboxone, is used to treat opioid use disorder. It can reduce withdrawal symptoms for 24 hours.

Greyson Van Hagel went through six addiction treatment programs before he hit rock bottom.

âI just felt all the consequences of everything that Iâd been doing and how my life had turned out,â Von Hagel says, âAnd I recognized that I was about to die, you know, quite soon. And so I called the people up at UAB and I begged them to let me return.â

Von Hagel spent almost a month in UABâs residential addiction treatment unit, which provides overnight care for patients with substance use disorder. This time, the program worked. He stopped using drugs like heroin and methamphetamine and has been clean now for almost three years. Von Hagel credits the program with saving his life.

âYou know I really felt like they cared for me when nobody else in the world did,â he says.

So Von Hagel was upset when he found out that UAB plans to close the residential addiction treatment unit on August 1st of this year. He says it will leave people like him with fewer treatment options.

Jordan DeMoss is vice president of clinical operations at UAB. He says he understands why some people oppose the decision to close the unit, but UAB wants to take a broader approach to addiction treatment.

Outpatient treatment programs provide drug and alcohol addiction treatment through individual sessions with a counselor, group therapy, 12-step meetings, and other activities to help individuals gain sober living skills. Most programs are designed for those individuals who have completed a medically supervised detoxification program and provide opportunities for clients to begin the process of early recovery.

Outpatient programs also offer a level of medical support as needed and psychological backing through therapy. Clients are encouraged to live at home, though there may be some flexibility regarding this requirement based on the circumstances and needs of each patient.

Outpatient treatment is perhaps the most common type of dual diagnosis program available. It does not pose a significant financial burden on patients. However, it is essential to note that outpatient treatment does not provide the support and supervision given in residential programs. Some addicts may need this level of support to maintain their sobriety.
