What Are The Best Evidence
It is important to remember that addiction is a treatable condition. Medical research has found a basic path that helps people overcome the physical and emotional dependence on drugs or alcohol, and helps them rebuild their lives. Several components can be part of the process, depending on individual needs.
These are the three basic steps of addiction treatment:
Are There Emerging Therapies For Addiction Treatment
Yes, there is growing evidence that physical exercise, mindfulness techniques, and transmagnetic cranial stimulation may help reduce substance use or otherwise improve health and well-being in people with substance use disorders.8,1921
Additionally, delivering treatment in a virtual environment via telehealth and using smartphone apps or other technology to deliver treatment or as an adjunct to treatment has also been an area of increased focus, particularly as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.2224

What Role Does Mental Health Have In Addiction Treatment
Mental health issues are often causative factors of substance abuse, and the effects of some substances can cause the symptoms of mental illness to be difficult to manage. When treating substance abuse, it is important to assess the whole person. Each person must receive care that considers their past, present situation, and hopes for the future. Part of understanding how to treat someone holistically means untangling their mental health issues from their substance abuse and treating both of these issues.
Many commonly-used holistic treatments have a positive effect on the symptoms of mental illness. They can provide calming and centering sensations, and many allow people to gain more control over their thought patterns. Taking care of the body and mind is important, and a holistic approach works well for many people as they work towards recovery and sobriety.
Integrating Psychotherapy And Pharmacotherapy
Pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy have distinct modes of action, time to effect, target symptoms, durability, and applicability. Each has some limitation when used alone. The combination has been found to enhance outcomes for opiate, alcohol, and cocaine use disorders . Understanding that many who suffer from substance use disorders have heterogeneous resources, problems and preferences, these methods can be integrated both philosophically and in practice .

What Are The Most Significant Benefits Of Evidence
When it comes to using an EBP as a part of a patients treatment regimen, doctors and clinicians can rest assured that the treatment is most likely to work. With numerous studies and other pieces of evidence to prove the treatments effectiveness, patients can quickly find relief with EBPs. Most studies that are used to back-up EBPs involve thousands of patients in large-scale, sophisticated clinical studies. The risk factors have already been assessed, saving clinicians and patients precious time to get the patient the relief from mental health issues and drug addiction that they need.
In addition, most EBPs include thorough instructions and plans that can be easily replicated for patients. Because these methods have been proven to work time and time again, and they are standardized, care is usually less expensive than more experimental, cutting-edge treatment methods and practices.
Patients also have the added benefit of knowing that most EBP clinicians are highly-trained, experienced, and knowledgeable. They have the necessary tools on hand to help patients quickly improve their quality of life and overcome drug addiction and mental health symptoms effectively. Since clinical expertise is one of the legs of the EBP stool, therapists who utilize EBPs have particular areas of specialty. Patients may find it beneficial if a therapist has substantial experience with treating a specific disorder, for example, depression with comorbid substance abuse.
The Four Strongest Evidence
There are countless recovery programs available, but the following four treatment programs are the ones most addiction and recovery doctors and therapists recommend first to their clients. Many people have successfully recovered in each of these four programs, and there is ample clinical research supporting the idea these programs work. Clients can choose among them for the one that seems like the best fit. The four strongest evidence-based substance abuse programs are:

The Truth About Evidence
Over the last few years, the term evidence-based has entered the lexicon regarding addiction treatment like a bull in a china shop. Not a conversation goes by without the mention of evidence-based practices in the field of addiction treatment, either the need for it, how it equates to quality of care or how such practices in turn represent ethical practices of behavioral healthcare. All of which is true.
For this example, it is important to point out that Medication Assisted Treatment is in fact an evidence-based practice. It has shown to keep patients engaged in a treatment process and to cut the mortality rates of the addicted population. However, the point being made in this example is that for some reason, based on some specific agenda, many experts that claim addiction treatment centers do not utilize MAT are then in fact not practicing evidence-based addiction treatment. This narrative is entirely untrue, creates a stigma surrounding addiction treatment as a whole and in fact can become a barrier for individuals and families seeking help for addiction. Medication Assisted Treatment is ONE example of an evidence-based practice , but unlike what many experts would lead the public to believe, it is not THE ONLY evidence-based practice that can or should be used to treat opioid use disorder or any other issues on the substance use disorder spectrum.

Why Is It Important To Use Evidence
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to addiction recovery, but there are clinically proven therapies that can be customized to meet clients needs and help them achieve long-term sobriety. Addiction treatment centers that embrace evidence-based practice ensure that their patients have access to the most comprehensive and effective care possible, thereby improving treatment outcomes.
The Twelve Steps And Twelve Step Facilitations
Perhaps the oldest and best-known of the evidence-based treatment programs for substance abuse are the Twelve Steps. Twelve-Step Programs began with Alcoholics Anonymous in the 1930s and have since spread to nearly all forms of addiction ranging from drug abuse to gambling and shopping addictions. Born from a religious movement called the Oxford Group, the 12 steps help individuals admit they have a problem, acknowledge they need help, work on their personal stumbling blocks and defects, seek restitution and repair broken relationships, and continue in recovery through service, fellowship, and a connection with a Higher Power. The Twelve Steps form the basis for many substance abuse treatment programs. From the single original program developed in the 1930s, today there are 94 verified Twelve Step fellowships. These include traditional anonymous meetings held in church basements, hospital meeting rooms, and other locations worldwide. But The Twelve Steps are also used in many other recovery programs. There are religious recovery programs based on the Twelve Steps, agnostic programs, and every other type of program in between. The Twelve Steps can be summarized as follows:

Why Do We Use Evidence
If youre just beginning your search for an addiction treatment provider, you may find yourself wondering, Why is evidence-based treatment important?
Evidence-based practice in addiction treatment ensures that clients receive the most effective care possible while improving treatment outcomes. Scientific research is an extremely reliable source for determining what works. For this reason, evidence-based addiction treatment methods are widely viewed as being very effective for helping addicted individuals overcome their drug and alcohol abuse.
Nova Recovery Center, for example, is a rehab center that offers evidence-based approaches to drug addiction treatment with a variety of research-based therapies and methods to customize each clients recovery program. Pharmacotherapies For Opioid Use Disorders
Methadone treatment for heroin users dates back to the 1960s , and it was approved by the FDA in 1973. It has been used for short- and long-term maintenance, and has demonstrated many public health outcomes: decreases in illicit drug use, psychiatric symptoms, family problems, and crime, and increases in employment . Methadone is a long-acting opiate agonist that prevents withdrawal and reduces the effects and cravings for other opiates. Recent estimates suggest 179,000 Americans are on methadone maintenance primarily in licensed clinics funded by federal block grants .
Levo-alpha acetylmethadol is an opioid agonist analog, which approved for the long-term maintenance of opiate dependence disorders by the FDA in 1993 . Like methadone, LAAM has demonstrated effects to prevent opiate withdrawal and block the effects of heroin use. LAAM has low abuse potential, but its use is rare because of some findings of potential adverse effects on the cardiovascular system, regulatory and insurance issues, and clinic acceptance .

What Are Potential Problems With Addiction Treatments That Are Not Evidence
There are many potential problems with addiction treatment facilities that claim to provide high-quality care but do not follow evidence-based treatment practices. Here are just a few.
- There is often a lack of scientific evidence and research that validates any claims that the treatment works, which means clients are likely to waste a lot of time and money.
- Ineffective treatment methods can be physically and/or emotionally harmful to the client.
- Ineffective treatment could deter clients from trying other treatment methods and reduce their likelihood of achieving lasting sobriety.
- Con artists may use manipulative language to convince clients to give them money for addiction treatment, with no return on the investment. Sometimes this is even accomplished in a way that skirts the law, leaving addicted individuals and concerned loved ones with very little legal ground to stand on.
What Are Examples Of Evidence
SAMHSAs National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices is an organized database featuring hundreds of evidence-based treatment methods that can be used in drug and alcohol rehab, as well as in other therapeutic settings.2
Here is a list of evidence-based practices in substance abuse treatment:

What To Look For In Scientifically Sound Rehab Programs
These elements are all important when looking for a scientifically sound rehab program. Research-based practices that result in predictable outcomes and long-term recovery are the types of programs to seek out. Because of the slight difference in the definitions of evidence-based and research-based practices, some treatment centers may use these terms interchangeably. In order to determine whether a rehab center that claims to be evidence-based is actually using research-based strategies, some questions to ask might be:
- Are your practices based on outcomes or on current research?
- What are your research sources?
- Are you aware of the most current studies on drug addiction treatment?
- How do you measure your success rates?
- Do you follow a comprehensive series of treatment practices customized to your clients?
- Do you use medically supported treatments and proven practices for therapy?
The Common Misconception Of Evidence Based Treatment For Addiction
The concept of Evidence Based Treatment in addiction treatment actually derives from the movement in health care towards Evidence Based Practices. In fact, when physicians use Evidence Based Practices in delivering healthcare, it tends to be a very good thing. In the Evidence Based Practice of medicine, decisions are based on real data , minimizing cost and unnecessary morbidity and leading generally to better outcomes. But, like many things you hear about in the addiction treatment world, Evidence Based Treatment is not what it seems.
The reality is that many treatment modalities for substance use disorders, though considered evidence based, often have very weak evidence behind them, in some cases none, and often are misused and/or administered by clinicians who do not have the training, experience or education to appropriately suggest them, let alone administer them. If one looks closely at the research, no medication or type of psychotherapy, even including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, stands out as truly being effective or close to a cure for most addictions.

Our Manhattan Addiction Psychiatrist Dr Glazer Provides Individualized Treatment
I was recently asked by a new patient who was consulting with me for his alcohol abuse what I could do for him to help him stop drinking. I thought about his for a minute and said , Not much. I now understand that my most important role as a physician and therapist for alcoholism and addiction in Manhattan is to help provide a safe space, a trusting, mutually respectful relationship where I can help guide a person through their own recovery process.
Every person I see in my consultation room is unique. Nobody is an addiction for which an evidence based treatment will cure them. Rather I join with my patient and collaborate to find what motivates and what will be most effective for them.
For some, CBT is a great fit, for others, medication helps too, insight oriented or supportive therapy are best suited for some people, and others of course, are better off with twelve step programs.
For most people, it is a combination of these different modalities as a part of a commitment to growth and life change. Everyone has their own path. As one of my former patients likes to say, I had to pay hundreds of dollars an hour to go talk to a fancy Upper East Side psychiatrist so that over time, he could help me find the help I really needed for my addiction in AA. .

What Are The Differences Between Evidence And Research
One of the confusing parts about finding an evidence-based program is the use of the language. There are slight distinctions in these terms that can make a difference in the way that the treatment is done. While evidence-based is a program that is based on evidence that this has worked before for participants, research-based is a bit different. Research-based means that someone has seen a particular outcome, then formulated, tested, and measured the results of a study to test where the outcome is predictable.

Selection And Data Extraction
Two reviewers will screen all articles identified from the search independently. First, titles and abstracts of articles returned from initial searches will be screened based on the eligibility criteria outlined above. Second, full texts will be examined in detail and screened for eligibility. Third, references of all considered articles will be hand-searched to identify any relevant report missed in the search strategy by two reviewers independently. Any disagreement between reviewers will be resolved by discussion to meet a consensus. EndNote version X9 will be used to manage all records.
Two researchers will extract data and organise it into variables based on the Cochrane Effective Practice and Organisation of Care Review Group Data Abstraction Form , the conceptual model of Proctor et al. , information about any specific implementation frameworks used, and a checklist of items aligned with the domains and subdomains of the CFIR . This method was used effectively in two previous reviews as a means of categorising the types of implementation strategies addressed by each of the studies included in the review.
