Food Addiction And Obesity

Food addiction as measured with the YFAS relates to higher body mass index . In nonobese adults, prevalence rates of food addiction range between 5% and 15%. Two studies that used a child version of the YFAS in children and adolescents reported prevalence rates between 3% and 7%.12,13 In obese adults, prevalence rates range between 15% and 20% but reach up to 30%50% in treatment-seeking adults with extreme obesity.14,15 Similarly, 38% of obese adolescents recruited at the beginning of an in-patient weight-loss program were classified as food addicted.16 Therefore, although a relationship between food addiction and body weight exists, neither can obesity be equated with food addiction nor is food addiction restricted to individuals with obesity.

Avoid Alcoholic Drinks And Caffeine

As much as you can, avoid alcoholic drinks and caffeinated beverages . Evidence shows that drinking alcoholic or caffeinated beverages triggers poor eating choices.

Coffee can cause the body to crave sugary drinks or sweet foods. In addition, too much caffeine can cause anxiety, and an anxious person may end up resorting to binge eating comfort foods to feel better.

Drinking alcohol may also cause you to become hungry. For sure you have experienced this. After a night of drinking or bar-hopping with friends, eating whatever you see on the fridge, even junk food seems like a good idea. Because alcohol causes poor judgment in many people, so this can break your recovery.

Also, avoid soda because it has addictive substances and has high sugar contents. Dont make it a part of your every day life to consume sugar because this can trigger addiction to your brain.

How Is Porn Addiction Diagnosed

Theres a lot of controversy about whether or not porn addiction really exists, and there are no formal diagnostic criteria, says Michael McGee, MD, staff psychiatrist at Atascadero State Hospital in San Luis Obispo, California. The closest you would come to a formal diagnosis is called other specified sexual dysfunction, he explains. This larger category of diagnoses, which refers to general sex addiction, encompasses more than pornography.

If you feel that your porn consumption is becoming an issue, you can reach out to a therapist and express your concern that you might have an addiction, says Dr. McGee. The therapist may help you decide whether you could benefit from some counseling.

How Food Addiction Is Treated

Being addicted to food is just as serious as any other addiction itâs just rarely taken as seriously.

âBeing a food addict isnât very different from a normal person who overeats. The food environment weâre in today is actually pretty toxic,â says Vera Tarman, MD, MSc, FCFP, author of Food Junkies: The Truth About Food Addiction. âThe food industry makes food intentionally addictive there are even some commercials that say âcrave.â So if a person canât stop at one, itâs not because theyâre a food addict itâs because theyâre exposed to food that was made addictive.â

    Here is how bad my addiction was:

    • I put cheese on everything. I didnt like eggs at all growing up, but I could tolerate the family Sunday scrambled eggs or omelette breakfast if I piled so much cheddar cheese on them they only tasted like cheese.
    • I lived on toasted cheese sandwiches, even being so lazy that I wouldnt grill the sandwich, Id just pop some bread in the toaster and pile cups and cups of grated cheese between the slices of toastit wasnt even melted.

    Our Emerging Treatment Program

    Were also creating new holistic approaches to manage addictive eating. We recently trialled an online intervention tailored to individuals personalities.

    Delivered by dietitians and based on behaviour change research, participants in the trial received personalised feedback about their symptoms of addictive eating, diet, physical activity and sleep, and formulated goals, distraction lists, and plans for mindfulness, contributing to an overall action plan.

    After three months, participants reported the program as acceptable and feasible. The next step in our research is to trial the treatment for effectiveness. Were conducting a research trial to determine the effectiveness of the treatment on decreasing symptoms of food addiction and improving mental health.

    This is the first study of its kind and if found to be effective will be translated to clinical practice.
