i started choosing not to feed that addiction any more on november 19th, 2001. since then, i’ve seen many people start making that same choice, and then, a day, or a week, or a month or two or three months later, relapse and start choosing to feed their addiction again.
it doesnt matter how many times temptation presents itself to you all that matters is how you choose to respond to the temptation.
and it makes me wonder: why am i still quit when people that quit before me, or around the same time as i did, or after me, started choosing to feed their addiction again?
i think it’s because i’ve finally recognized that i’m an addict.
after smoking for over thirty years and quitting so many times i can’t even begin to count them, it finally registered: i am a nicotine addict. and as such, i am subject to the immutable laws of addiction, the first of which is: “administration of a substance to a person addicted to that substance, no matter how long it’s been since that person stopped using that substance, will result in re-establishment of that person’s dependence on that substance”.
this is why alcoholics who want to remain sober can never take that first drink. in a recent study, it was determined that 95% of ex-smokers who smoke just one cigarette experience total relapse to their previous level of consumption .
and i finally have.
this morning, as soon as i got out of bed, i looked at my reflection in the mirror and recited my mantra:
i am a nicotine addict.

How Nicotine Affects You
Researchers are also looking at other chemicals in tobacco that make it hard to quit. In the brains of animals, tobacco smoke causes chemical changes that are not fully explained by the effects of nicotine.
The average amount of nicotine in one regular cigarette is about 1 to 2 milligrams . The amount you actually take in depends on how you smoke, how many puffs you take, how deeply you inhale, and other factors.
Nicotine Addiction Symptoms In Teens
How can a parent, guardian, friend or loved one recognize nicotine addiction in teens? Nicotine addiction symptoms may be obvious or more subtle depending on the teen. Some symptoms will be more uncomfortable than others, especially if a teen has developed a physical dependence on nicotine. It is even possible for individuals who infrequently use nicotine products to become addicted or at the very least have a difficult time trying to drop the bad habit.

- Excessive cravings for tobacco products
- Making sure one always has tobacco on hand
- Going out of their way to get tobacco products if they dont have any

Importantly, withdrawal symptoms ease after a few days of not using tobacco products.
Why Am I Not Addicted To Cigarettes
I am 30 years old and essentially a non-smoker. Most everyone I know is a non-smoker. The other night I was in a bar with some friends, all except one non-smokers. Because the one smoker was smoking, two of my non-smoker friends had a cigarette, as did I. On talking, I discovered that these two people, like my wife and I, occasionally smoke a cigarette in social situations, but have never been addicted smokers or had any trouble quitting.
In college I smoked a cigarette or two most days, and sometimes more. I never consciously quit smoking, never had cravings and never had any trouble not smoking when it didnt fit in with my surroundings. Both of my sisters smoked when they were younger, both more than I did, but they each quit in their mid-20s with no special effort. I believe each of them will still occasionally have a cigarette in social situations.
I have seen some rather extreme statistics, that 90 % of smokers are addicted and that a person who smokes 4 cigarettes is not likely to quit until he/she smokes 400,000 more.
While I am certainly aware of the addictive power of cigarettes, it seems from my own experience and those of so many people I know that these statistics must be exaggerated.

How To Quit Nicotine Gum
Work out a realistic plan to wean yourself off of nicotine gum. Some steps that you can take to reduce your dependence:
- If there are specific times of the day that you use the gum, e.g. first thing in the morning, after meals, etc, choose the one that is the easiest to let go.
