Sexaholics Anonymous: The White Book

Karmen Karma: Overcoming Addiction and Abuse

Sexaholics Anonymous defines the major factor or motivation of sexual addiction as lust, which is defined as an attitude demanding that a natural instinct serve unnatural desires.

Therefore, the problem is not the motivation to satisfy a desire this is good and normal.

Instead, the problem occurs when a natural instinct is perverted far beyond its intended purpose.

This exploitation of natural instinct is what disregards sound reasoning and suspends volitional capacity.

For example, when one begins to use sex to satisfy loneliness or shopping to conquer anxiety, or food to swallow depression, the natural motivation leverages a natural instinct in an unnatural way resulting in a destruction of the human will. Why? Because it works so well!!

Moreover, this attitude is the controlling factor in addiction. The behaviors or activities are not what one is addicted to. Instead, they are enslaved to a worldview that believes in, trusts wholeheartedly, and unloads lust in its fullest capacity.

The SA Basic Text is one of my favorites, primarily because it parallels the manner in which I view the world. However, one thing is for sure, it will definitely expand and enrich the map you use to navigate your recovery territory, whether you agree with its concepts or not.

Its a must read!

Don’t Miss: Agencies That Help With Drug Addiction

Never Enoughthe Neuroscience And Experience Of Addiction By Judith Grisel

About the book

Never enough is a book that describes addiction very well, both in terms of science and how it feels to be stuck in the grips of drugs.

You will learn a lot about the brain, how it changes when a person becomes addicted and also the unique ways different drugs and substances affect it. From coffee to cocaine to marijuana and everything in between.

About the author

Judit Grisel is a behavioral neuroscientist whose research focuses on finding the core causes of addiction. She is an expert in pharmacology and genetics. She is a former substance addict herself, which makes the book even more credible as it adds a deeper dimension to it.

My personal opinion of the book

The whole book is full of interesting stuff. I have to warn you, though, that the author sounds a bit sleepy when reading and some people may perhaps wish she would read with more energy and enthusiasm.

I particularly like the first part, where she talks about how the brain desperately strives to keep homeostasis and thus it has a powerful mechanism to counteract any stimuli. Something that I often talk about myself on myYouTube channel.

Well, at least I did, as I suspect that the flatline is just the B-process in the opponent process theory.

When Judith mentioned that the B-process can also be activated without the A-process , merely by exposing ourselves to something that the brain associates with the A-process , my mind was blown.

I thought, thats it!!!

A book well worth listening to.

Unchain Your Brain10 Steps To Break The Addictions That Steal Your Life By Daniel G Amen & David E Smith

About the book

Unchain Your Brain talks a lot about practical things people can do to overcome an addiction. It does not dive that deep into the neuroscience of addiction or looking at dopamine receptors and thing alike. Its perhaps a bit more for people who want practical and easy steps to consider.

For example, what nutrition and foods are going to be most helpful when trying to overcome an addiction? What does socializing do for me, when trying to overcome an addiction?

In one chapter of the book youll discover how having healthy levels of Omega 3 fatty acids significantly helps with impulse control and that research on addicts have shown that low levels of Omega 3 actually leads to a lot more relapses.

The book also talks a lot about the mental side of things and the importance of having a social network around you.

About the authors

Dr. Daniel Amen is is a psychiatrist, brain specialist and the director of Amen Clinics. He is also a 5x New York Times best-selling author.

David E. Smith is a medical doctor specializing in addiction medicine.

My personal opinion of the book

I like the book and there are some real gold grains in it. However, it did not leave as big of an impact on me as for example The Willpower Instinct or Never Enough.

That said, Ive listened to this book only once and Im going to go through it again in the near future because, again, there is a lot to discover in it.

Your Sexually Addicted Spouse: How Partners Can Cope And Heal By Barbara Steffens And Marsha Means

Yes, Your Sexually Addicted Spouse is for partners. However, its also invaluable for the addict.

A common practice I use with my clients to help them see the ripple effect of their addiction is by assigning them to attend a fellowship or support group that offers a program of recovery for the families and friends of addicts.

    Why?

Even after the cats out of the bag, most addicts still fail to understand the depth of their betrayal and trauma theyve caused their partners. Empathy wouldnt be a helpful component in the addicts lifestyle, so there is a lot of catching up to do.

Yes, Steffens and Means have the partners as the primary target audience. Its designed to provide hope, healing, and help.

However, reading this book is like mainlining a dose of empathy for the sexual addict.

Empathy is a necessary virtue for healing, connecting, and developing authentic and meaningful relationships.

This also happens to be a sign of a mature recovery.
