Myth 1: Intuitive Eating Will Make You Binge On Food That You Shouldnt Be Eating

Another version of that is Ill eat intuitively, but Ill just eat junk food.

Fact: If thats what your body needs, then yes, youll binge on food you shouldnt eat.

It may make you uncomfortable because you might believe that your body does not know what it needs. Thus, you might be thinking that you need to rely on someone or something else to tell you what your body needs.

The part of the intuitive eating journey is coming back to a respectful relationship between you, the spirit, and your body. This means that you do support your body through healthy behavior. In response, your body supports you through life.

When you experience a desire to binge or overeat, its because your body is trying to tell you something. The body is trying to point out to you that you are in a state of imbalance, that is something inside you is not okay, and it needs to comfort itself through food.

So does intuitive eating lead you to binge on food you shouldnt eat? The answer is no. But it does make you more aware of the messages that your body tries to send you.

Bonus: Myth 1: Intuitive Eating Has No Scientific Basis

Fact: This is by far the easiest of all intuitive eating myths to debunk. Intuitive eating is a proven and well-researched eating framework. As of today, there are well over a hundred intuitive eating research studies published, most of them peer-reviewed, that demonstrate the efficacy of intuitive eating.

To this day, there is not one scientific research that shows any kind of danger associated with this eating framework.

Intuitive eating has a scientific basis. There will be more research around it as more and more people become intuitive eaters.

When Do I Need A 12

You may need a 12-step program if you suffer from an SUD or qualify for having substance abuse issues of any kind. If youre wondering whether a 12-step program is right for you, discuss this with your therapist, doctor, or other medical professional. They might have better insight as to whether a 12-step program could help you. At the very least, you can try to attend a free 12-step meeting on your own to see if it could be the right fit. How Effective Is The 12

Before discussing the efficacy of 12-step programs, its important to remember that efficacy is relative, meaning that how effective something is depends on your goals. If your goal is abstinence from substance abuse, 12-step programs are extremely promising modalities.7

12-step members may use the phrase it works if you work it, meaning that if you invest yourself fully in working a thorough program and completing the 12 steps with your sponsor, the program will be effective for you. However, studies and efficacy rates vary.7

In people who are non-comorbid, meaning that they suffer from a substance use disorder but do not suffer from any other additional mental health condition, 12-step programs prove highly effective in improving the likelihood of long-term abstinence. For those who suffer from substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions, 12-step programs were also found to be extremely effective in one New York city study.7

Other studies mention that many people drop out of 12-step programs 40% in the first year, to be exact.8

Overall, 12-step programs are still one of the most effective and best modalities for fostering long-term abstinence from substance abuse and facilitating the successful transition for people who struggled with substance use disorder into sobriety. They prioritize and work to manifest values of faith, community, abstinence, acceptance, and ongoing self-improvement in their members.

When You Transform Your Eating Pattern From Dieting To Intuitive Eating You Have To Lift All The Rules Around Food

Theres a period of time, the honeymoon period, from the moment you begin to when you become at peace with food where youre trying to figure out what it means for you to eat when you want and whatever you want.

I call it in my program the elastic band period, where you go from restricting to finally achieving food freedom. Imagine pulling an elastic band towards you and then releasing it. What would happen? The elastic will go completely the other way. Then, it will rebound to restriction and go the other way again.

Every time it does a loop, its going to have less force in it. Then with time, its going to stabilize and be back to normal. Thats what happens when you become an intuitive eater.

When you release the rules, your reptilian brain is like Holy crap. You mean we can eat the carbs weve been restricting for years? Lets eat it all! Thats what happens.

But it doesnt last long, because intuitive eating teaches you to respect your body. When you eat too much of the food that was forbidden before, you likely not feel your best. Ever tried to eat donuts at every meal for a week?

You have to satisfy your reptilian brain and to really prove to your body that there are no more rules. Then your body will stabilize itself.

Myth : Intuitive Eating Will Make Me Gain Weight

Another version of that myth is intuitive eating causes weight gain.

Now, before I go any further, I want to validate the desire for weight loss that you might have. These are real and consistently encouraged in the society that is laden with weight stigma. Weight stigma is also known as weight bias, weight-based discrimination, and also stereotyping based on a persons weight.

So it makes perfect sense that you are afraid of gaining weight or that you desire to lose weight.

Fact: Intuitive eating DOES NOT cause weight loss or weight gain all the time. The truth is, none of us knows what the body will do as a result of changing the way you eat. If a dieting coach or guru predicts that you will lose 20 pounds in four weeks as a result of their new diet, that is BS.

Quick Note From Lisa:

For over half my life Ive been either vegetarian or vegan. However, it wasnt until I started eating whole food plant based did my health and weight change.

At age 40 I sat in a doctors office in tears. At my highest weight of 327 lbs, I was depressed and confused as to why I weighed so much. I had a healthy, beautiful baby boy and I kept thinking that I should be happy, but I wasnt.

The doctor gave me a prescription for Zoloft and told me to look into weight loss surgery. I left his office feeling defeated, questioning everything. I knew I needed to take charge of my health if I planned to be the Mom I wanted to be. On Presidents Day of that year I became vegan and shortly after, I started eating a whole food plant based diet. It was then I rediscovered my joy for life and food.

Ive lost almost 135 lbs and Ive never been happier. I am enjoying life to the fullest, raising an amazing son, and being an example of what is possible.

What Are The 12 Steps Of Food Addicts Anonymous

The 12 steps of Food Addicts Anonymous are similar to many other 12-step programs, but identify food addiction as the problem for unmanageability. The 12 steps are as follows:

1. We admitted we were powerless over our food addiction that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood God.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7. Humbly asked God to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood God, praying only for knowledge of Gods will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to food addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
