Theres a lot of math and science that gets put into finding the perfect combination of salt, sugar, and fat into food products to make it impossible to have just one bite. This is known as food engineering. Chemistry and technology are used to make food more addicting, and more profitable. When food companies create products with the perfect amount of salt, sugar, and fat, it is known as the bliss point. Its what makes junk food so irresistible. These processed foods stimulate the reward system in the brain in the same way that addictive drugs do.

Reduce Your Time In Stressful Environments

Some stress is good for us. Our bodies are made to handle some amount of stress, and thats an awesome part of being a human being. But too much stress can negatively affect us physically and emotionally. When you start to feel stressed, take a few deep breaths and figure out what is triggering your stressed state. If its something you have to do, then do it and take a break afterward. If you know that a specific environment is not suitable for you, try to avoid that environment, change it, or change your mind frame toward it.

Develop A Nutritional Plan

The development of a nutritional plan for those in recovery involves planning out meals and determining an appropriate meal schedule that meshes with other activities in the treatment plan.

This also involves taking into account any issues the client has around food, including eating disorders. Depending on individual needs, the plan may leave room for snack times, or it may be a better option to restrict intake to three times per day if the client has issues with things like binge eating.

Symptoms Of Food Addiction

There are no blood tests or laboratory exams that can diagnose the existence of food addiction. Like other addiction disorders, the diagnosis of food addiction is based on the persons behaviors. Here are the symptoms of addiction:

  • Frequent craving of foods despite being full.
  • Eating big servings of craved food much more than the intended serving.
  • Eating certain foods up to the point that you are excessively full or about to throw up.
  • Feeling guilty after overeating but excessively eats again
  • Makes excuses why giving in with a food craving is a good idea.
  • Repeatedly tries to quit food addiction but is unsuccessful in doing so.
  • Hides from others when eating unhealthy foods or hides certain foods from their partner or family.
  • Finding it hard to control themselves from eating unhealthy foods despite knowing the negative consequences caused by food addiction
  • Can you relate to at least four signs above? You should start to worry about having a food addiction. But if you have six signs or above, go seek professional help because its most likely food addiction.

    Alcohol definitely lowers inhibitions more than coffee or other drinks with other caffeine content. Theres also a high likelihood that the bar or restaurant will have addictive foods like chicken wings and french fries and drinking lots of alcohol will only make it more likely that a relapse will occur.     I recently finished reading The End of Overeating by David Kessler, and it opened my eyes to a side of food that I didnt know existed.

This is also seen when we moralize food into categories like good and bad. A desire for perceived bad foods builds from the mere idea that we shouldnt be eating them.

    Begin Looking At Food Objectively

    Manufacturers are experts at producing foods that are chock full of salt, fat, and sugar. These are often referred to as hyperpalatable. Plus, they often require no cooking or preparation, are inexpensive, and are easily attainable. They are made for mass consumption. They are not, however, what your body needs to function. On some level, you know that, but the louder voice in your head is telling you that these foods are a comfort. They are the salve for your emotional wounds. And, yes, they do function that way for you at times. This is why you need to remove the emotional component and look at them solely as a source of nutrition.

    You must look to nutritional staples that can give you the healthy requirements your body depends upon. Yes, you crave fat. But, you would do better to get it from fish, lean meats, oil, avocados, and nuts. Yes, you crave carbs, but you can get those from whole grains, sweet fruit, and vegetables. Your brain is designed to enjoy these foods. But, you may not understand that because you have negative emotional associations with them.

    Some people think that food addiction is just another term for binge-eating disorder.

    We are halfway into the month of January and what an interesting 2021 its unfolding to be. There is a lot of noise out there and while I try to focus my content mainly on nutrition, its pretty difficult not to see how holistic nutrition is so pivotal to fearing less during these times.
