Non-urgent health concerns may be addressed via email communication with a doctors office lab results may be viewed online prescriptions can also be refilled online and nurses are available for medical advice 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.3,4

The first step to seeking treatment for a substance abuse or dependency concern is often an initial meeting and conversation with your primary Kaiser Permanente doctor. Individuals can set up this meeting or appointment over the phone, online, or email the doctors office. Depending on medical necessity, a primary care physician may refer or authorize individuals for further treatment.

Depending on medical necessity, a primary care physician may refer or authorize individuals for further treatment, after an initial assessment, in a specialized substance abuse treatment facility. Drug and alcohol treatment centers often have professionals who understand the complexities of insurance and how to help individuals use their coverage to pay for services. When treatment is not entirely covered, these same professionals are likely to have suggestions on alternate funding.

Mental Health Field Brimming With New Advancements And Technology

  • Copy Link URLCopied!

Like most areas of health care, mental health has experienced its share of advances and changes over the years thanks to technology, medical research, new health care laws and the advent of new medications.

From the introduction of Prozac in the late 80s to the passage of health care reform that eliminates mental health as a pre-existing condition to the release of apps that can help people manage their condition, the field has come a long way over time.

Heres a look at some of whats new in mental health.

Smartphone apps

There are a multitude of apps available today for those suffering from mental health issues, said Bettie Reinhardt, who spent 13 years as executive director of the San Diego chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the countrys largest grassroots mental health organization.

For instance, she said, apps can allow people with bipolar disorders to record the bodys pulse and blood pressure, and some apps even alert patients if and when they are beginning to get manic or slip into depression.

She said such apps can be coupled with a therapists care.

If your Kaiser insurance policy does not cover all your rehab expenses, itâs important not to let that stop you from getting treatment. You donât have to use the insurance when you decide to check into drug and alcohol facility. The total of these out-of-pocket costs can vary based on many factors, but some treatment programs may have one or more options to help you afford recovery help, such as:

    • Payment plans: Rehab programs may offer payment plans where you arrange to spread out the total cost over regular payment installments, to make the financial burden more manageable. Be sure to look at interest rates and other details of the plan.
    • Sliding fee scale: Programs may offer a sliding fee scale, where the treatment costs will vary based on the individualâs incomeâif you make less money, you will have lower costs. This may only be an option if you pay entirely out-of-pocket.
    • Scholarships: Programs may offer rehab scholarships where you can potentially receive treatment at a discounted cost or no cost at all.

    A Full Spectrum Of Support

When people become physically dependent on alcohol or drugs, its not safe for them to stop drinking or using without medical supervision. Our addiction medicine care teams can help members with severe SUD stop drinking or using drugs safely and comfortably. This doesnt treat SUD, but its an important first step toward recovery for the members who need it.

Counseling can help members with SUD explore the reasons behind their drug or alcohol use and come up with new, healthy coping strategies. It can be especially effective for members who also have a mental health condition, or who started using to deal with distressing emotions, trauma, or excessive stress. We offer individual and group therapy for all our members.

In some cases, our care teams prescribe medication to treat an underlying mental health condition, like depression or anxiety. In other cases, medication is used to help reduce cravings, ease withdrawal symptoms, and help prevent relapse. This is sometimes referred to as medication-assisted treatment , and is mostly used to treat addiction to opioids, heroin, prescription pain relievers, and alcohol. Medication is typically used in combination with other treatment approaches, like therapy and self-care.
