Before getting licensed as a counselor, students must spend many supervised hours gaining clinical experience. These hours may be done through internships or practicums, which are usually a part of your degree program.
In states where licensure can be achieved with a bachelors degree, candidates typically spend 4,000 to 10,000 hours gaining supervised experience. However, those with masters degrees may only need around 1,000 hours of clinical experience. After these hours are completed, a candidate can take an exam to become licensed.

The Addictions Counseling Certificate Program provides students at the undergraduate and graduate levels who are enrolled in a behavioral science degree program with the educational content necessary to apply for chemical dependency counselor licensure in Ohio issued by Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board. The ACCP is also available to in-career professionals who wish to pursue addictions counseling as a specialty area. The ACCP can be completed in 12 months and all classes are offered in-person at the Kent campus.
The ACCP is a certificate program offered at KSU. It is not a degree program. Because it is not a degree program, the ACCP is not accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs because CACREP does not accredit non-degree programs.

Do I Need To Be A Teacher Before I Can Become A School Counselor
The Department of Education does not require prospective Ohio school counselors to be licensed teachers. Even if you are a licensed teacher, you will need to complete a masters degree in school counseling before applying for licensure. If you are a licensed teacher in Ohio with at least two years of experience, you will be issued a five-year license by the Department once your application is approved. If you are not a licensed, experienced teacher, you will be issued a two-year provisional license that may include a mandatory induction period.

Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor Licensing Process
The main type of counseling licensure in Ohio is Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor . LPCCs provide services to individuals and groups with a range of emotional and mental challenges and are able to assess, diagnose, and treat mental disorders. In Ohio, this license is issued by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapy Board. A masters degree in a counseling-related field with a 100-hour practicum and a 600-hour internship is required. The Board does not provide a list of approved programs but if your chosen counseling program is not accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs in clinical mental health counseling, clinical rehabilitation counseling, or addiction counseling, you will be required to submit supplementary documents about your coursework and training.
1. Register as a Counselor Trainee , if required.
2. Apply for LPC licensure and permission to sit the required exam.
3. Pass the National Counselor Examination .
Applicants must have pre-approval from the Board to sit the National Counselor Exam , a multiple choice exam offered by the National Board for Certified Counselors . Renewing Addiction Counseling Certification
Certifications must be renewed every two years. Additionally, there are several requirements for continuing education credits that counselors must complete to renew their certifications. For each of the three NAADAC certifications, renewal requires 40 hours of continuing education every two years. Counselors must also provide their work history for the last two years.

You might think that, as you reach the next level , youll need a bachelors degree from a college or university. An associate degree in a nursing or behavioral science field will be sufficient. At a minimum, youll be able to advance to this level in about two yearsthe amount of time it generally takes to earn a behavioral science associates degree.
With the Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor III, you will need to have a bachelors degree in a behavioral science or nursing. Youll also need 2,000 hours or one year of chemical dependency counseling experience, either in the form of an internship or compensated work. Youll also have to document the hours you have put into practical experience of the 12 core functions. These functions are:
- Screening
- Report and record keeping
- Consultation with other professionals
Each of these functions requires different skills of you. You should know your clients very well so that, when its time to refer them to outside services, for instance, youll be better able to identify and contact the most appropriate resource for their needs.

Can You Be A Substance Use Counselor With A Felony
Every state has different policies regarding licensing and felonies. There are multiple factors to consider when determining if obtaining licensure is possible.

Apply For Your Pc Title
In order to advance to the PCC level of licensure you will need to acquire additional supervised work experience. This must occur while you have the Professional Counselor title.
- Apply to the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist Board for the PC title.
- This will require that you provide proof of educational attainment as well as your NCE test score.
- Pass a criminal background check.

Counselor Testing & Examination Process
After you file an application for licensure, youll be pre-registered for the licensure exam. Youll be given a username and password in application email. These are to be used to register for the examination when you schedule your date, time and location. These usernames and passwords are valid only for six months, so schedule as soon as you receive them.
Youll have three hours to take and complete your exam. Youll get the preliminary results of your exam on the same day official results will be sent to you one to two weeks later. If you dont pass the test, you can reschedule , but you have to wait at least 90 days before you take the test again.
The exam is computer-based and given at several regional sites in Ohio and the states that border Ohio. Exams are given Mondays through Saturdays.
Whether youre applying for your initial license or renewing it after several years as a chemical dependency counselor, Ohio does require its licensed independent chemical dependency counselors, as well as other professionals, to complete specific steps in the application process.
In Ohio, at least, you are required to report felony charges and convictions to the board in your application. This includes the circumstances of each felonywhich includes active addiction.
