Sex has always been looked at as a pleasurable act and an integral part of a romantic relationship that contributes largely to forming intimacy in a couple. It is a physiological need and is considered almost equally important as food or breathing in a hierarchy of needs theory given by Abrahim Maslow, 1943.
The act of sex is considered a must for the survival of human beings. It is placed as a basic need before one achieves higher levels of motivation .
Ones libido controls and acts as a base for all the interest one has for sex, hence is also referred to as sex appetite. Brain functions can influence this, hormonal shifts, learned behavior and mental state, and stress. Although some people have a generally high libido, which is characterized by having a higher sex drive than ordinary people.
A question that follows, in this case, is, do these people with a higher libido have a sex addiction? All the people with high libido are not sex addicts, but all the sex addicts naturally have either acquired or naturally higher libido.
Although the significant difference between having sex addiction and just a high libido is that sex addiction makes one dysfunctional when deprived of it and causes significant distress as the urge intensifies from time to time.

Overcoming Sexual Addiction: 5 Essentials To Break The Habit
Nowadays, there are many Christian-based programs designed to break the pattern of unwanted sexual behavior. In my experience, there are common elements to these programs that give men success.
If you are having trouble breaking the habit, the following are what I would consider essential in overcoming sexual addiction : spiritual disciplines, accountability, support, insight into deluded thinking, and people to grow alongside together.
Lets now consider why each of these elements is crucial to a plan for overcoming sexual addiction.
How To Overcome Sex Addiction Step One Get Right With God
What this addiction boils down to is really just sin. Plain and simple. We make a lot of excuses and blame a lot of things, but really its just rebellion against God. No more, no less. But lets face it, rebellion against God is no small thing.
Romans 8:5-8 Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace. For the sinful nature is always hostile to God. It never did obey Gods laws, and it never will. Thats why those who are still under the control of their sinful nature can never please God.
If we go on letting our sin control us it is going to lead to death. Thats the path were on when we are slaves to sexual sin. But the good news is there is hope. The Bible tells us that if we belong to God, then He offers us freedom, and that includes the power to overcome sex addiction.
So the obvious question is, how do I know if I am a child of God and have access to this freedom He offers? The answer is simple.

Do You Suffer From Sex Addiction
People with a high sex drive might often find themselves wondering if they suffer from sex addiction because their sex drive might be different from that of their partners. These thoughts might be consuming and disturbing. They need to be cleared.
As mentioned earlier, sex is a natural part of human life. However, when your need for sex becomes a main driving force in your existence, and you become largely preoccupied with sex, you might be addicted.
As the DSM-5 does not specify the criteria for sex addiction, there are considerable disagreements regarding the existence and the sex addiction signs.
The sex addiction definition is not clear. However, psychologist Dr. Ellen Hendriksen and other behavioral experts outlined these pointers that can determine if one has a sex addiction.
- Sex gets in the way of their everyday life
- Consuming and compulsive sexual thoughts and fantasies
- They lose the ability to control it
- They have sex compulsively
- They are dependent on sex
- All aspects of their lives get tied up with sex
- They have empty and dysfunctional relationships that revolve around sex
- They lie to cover up their sexual behaviors
- Feeling remorse or guilty after sex
Once one meets this sex addiction criterion, this addiction can manifest in:

A successful recovery program will include at least a few of the following components:
The first step on the journey toward recovery is to admit that you have something from which you wish to recover. That means getting real with yourself and saying out loud to another human being: I am an addict.
