My Friend Is Addicted To Videogames

What Is Gaming Disorder

CARRYING MY GIRLFRIEND, IM ADDICTED TO THIS GAME

Gaming disorder is persistent and repeated participation in computer gaming for typically 8 to 10 or more hours per day and at least 30 hours a week.

But gaming disorder is not yet an official disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th edition , and more research is generally needed.

Gaming addiction can be a severe disorder that may cause issues with:

  • personal health
  • relationships with others
  • work and school responsibilities

But experts are optimistic that more studies will shine a light on this condition and how best to treat it.

World Health Organization classified the disorder in its International Classification of Diseases , naming it a medical condition.

Also, a small 2018 study indicated that the business of the video game sector saw worldwide growth of 8.5% in 10 countries, including the United States.

At the time, that was a significant increase. More growth can be anticipated as accessibility and affordability improve amid the emergence of new technologies.

Ryan Van Cleave, author of Unplugged: My Journey in the Dark World of Video Game Addiction, reflected how he would try to find any extra time to play online games. But he also noticed he was neglecting his family and career.

This example demonstrates how people can feel a lack of control over their gaming and even prioritize it over other parts of their lives, like friendships, exercise, and maintaining their jobs.

Using Video Games As A Coping Mechanism

If you go home and play video games after a long day at work, then that would be considered a healthy coping mechanism. But if you play video games for several hours to decompress, then that is when your gaming habit becomes a problem.

If video games get in the way of you trying to address the cause of stress from your job, then that is unhealthy. If you are unable to look for another job because you spend so much time gaming, then that is a sign of video game addiction.

It is fine to use gaming as a coping mechanism to de-stress from your day. However, when you start to ignore your problems and use video games to cope with them, then that is when your gaming habit becomes a problem.

Setting Limits On Your Access To Games

  • 1Give yourself a strict time limit for daily play. Health experts recommend that teens and school-aged kids should spend no more than 2 hours a day in front of a screen, and its just as important for adults to limit their time being sedentary.XResearch source If youre struggling with too much gaming, try setting specific limits for yourself on how long you play each day.
  • For example, you might limit yourself to no more than half an hour of play each day.
  • Help yourself keep track of your playing time by setting a timer on your phone or another device.
  • Dont give up or get too upset with yourself if you slip up and end up playing longer than you meant to from time to timeits totally normal to have setbacks! Try to learn from what happened and think of a way to avoid it next time, like having a buddy send you a text to remind you its time to stop playing.
  • Warning: Setting appropriate limits can help prevent you from developing a full-blown addiction. However, if youre severely addicted to gaming, you may need to quit playing games altogether.XTrustworthy SourceCleveland ClinicEducational website from one of the worlds leading hospitalsGo to source

  • 2Keep gaming devices out of your bedroom. If you have a game console, computer, or other gaming device in your room, you may be tempted to stay up all night playing instead of getting the sleep you need. Make your room a screen-free zone so you dont get caught up in late-night gaming.XResearch source

/10 Finding Yourself Unable To Quit

We all know those gamers who refuse to quit and play for hours on end into the dead of night. This could be a sign of an addiction as they find it impossible to put the game down for even a second.

They might always be online or have completed a game several times in a few short days. One way gamers could handle this issue is to set a bedtime or a certain amount of time to play in order to prevent their gaming from getting out of control.

When gamers find it hard to quit, or even put the game down for a second, it can cause their health to suffer. This could include things like lack of sleep, not eating proper meals, or even poor hygiene.

It can cause a person’s health to degrade as they develop more serious illnesses due to their bodies not functioning properly. The best way to handle this is to make sure that gamers are taking care of themselves first and playing games second so they can be healthy, while still finding happiness.

    How To Quit Video Games

    1. Quit Cold Turkey

You can drop gaming altogether. While this is the least effective strategy to overcome video game addiction, it does work for some people. However, this has a low success rate because of the way gaming affects our brains.

Instead of trying to quit gaming altogether, try to do a dopamine detox. A dopamine detox is an exercise to deprive yourself of activities that are too stimulating and fun. Delete all social media applications from your phone, uninstall all your games, and disconnect your computer and keep it somewhere that is not easily accessible.

Before starting the dopamine fast, try to find other activities to do. Try picking up a skill that involves creating something physical. Try learning a new instrument. Pick up a sport, or start a new exercise routine. Try to spend more time in nature â go for a hike or a run. You can even try to start meditating and cultivating more internal awareness. If you can come to terms with the reason you play video games in the first place, it will be easier to find ways to avoid gaming.

Dopamine detoxes are the most effective when done with someone. Have a friend do it with you. You can check in with each other for fifteen minutes a day and hold each other accountable.

Set Boundaries You Feel Comfortable With And Be Willing To Compromise

Last year my son was only allowed to play his PS4 on the weekend so from Friday after school to Sunday night .

If I had it completely my way this rule would continue today but I recognize that times are changing.

He wants to play it occasionally during the week while I would prefer it to only happen on the weekends.

The happy compromise is that he can now spread his gaming hours out during the week .

In the end he plays it for the same length of time every week, just not in the way I originally envisaged.

How To Treat Internet Gaming Disorder

For gamers who play too much, cutting back and prioritizing family and friends in the real world may be all they need to get back to a healthier relationship with games. But for others, cutting back on game time can be challenging.

If cutting back is not working, then it’s important to increase the intervention intensity, Grammar says.

Depending on how severely a persons gaming affects their life, professional help could involve seeing a therapist one or two times a week, going to meetings, joining a support group, or even doing some inpatient treatment for a month or two.

The treatment would be generally focused around initially removing all screens or video games and helping the individual refocus on a healthy body-mind balance, Grammar says. Then slowly reducing the intervention structure to let the individual figure out the process of living a balanced life while still being supported until they can manage on their own.

Reiss also recommends asking yourself one simple question:

What is driving you to use games to an unhealthy degree?

Very often, when the attraction to gaming becomes unhealthy, it is meeting some unconscious, partially conscious, or even conscious emotional need, he says. The work to be done is not just to focus on changing the behavior, but identifying, exploring, and as much as possible resolving the underlying emotional need.

Fishing is incredibly boring compared to gaming, Ryan says, but somehow thats what I like about it.

    /10 Constantly Thinking About Gaming

Why Teen Addicted To Video Games Says He Rages At Parents

This will not be as obvious to a friend or family member as it would to the gamer themselves. They will find that their every thought leads them to think about gaming, and it even invades their dreams.

It is the only thing they will be able to think about day after day no matter what major events happen in their life. This is one sign that might have a gamer reevaluating their sense of self as they learn to put down the game and get themselves back on track.

    Debates On The Classification

My friend is addicted to PUBG (the video game, players unknown ...

A meta-analytic review of pathological gaming studies concluded that about 3% of gamers may experience some symptoms of pathological gaming. The report noted problems in the field with defining and measuring pathological gaming and concluded that pathological gaming behaviors were more likely the product of underlying mental health problems rather than the inverse.

Barnett and Coulson expressed concern that much of the debate on the issue of addiction may be a knee jerk response stimulated by poor understanding of games and game players. Such issues may lead both society and scholars to exaggerate the prevalence and nature of problematic gaming, and over-focus on games specifically, while ignoring underlying mental health issues. However, Problem gamblers have a higher chance for getting mental illness as well.

Other scholars have cautioned that comparing the symptoms of problematic gaming with problematic gambling is flawed, and that such comparisons may introduce research artifacts and artificially inflate prevalence estimates. For instance, Richard Wood has observed that behaviors which are problematic in regards to gambling may not be as problematic when put into the context of other behaviors that are rewarding such as gaming. Similarly, Barnett and Coulson have cautioned that discussions of problematic gaming have moved forward prematurely without proper understanding of the symptoms, proper assessment and consequences.

Mr. Siu is a founder of the mobile gaming developer Storm8.

Gov. Gavin Newsom of California has just signed legislation that would require social media companies to make sure new products wont be harmful to minors. The focus is on Big Tech and social media apps like Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. Flying under the radar are video games even though kids in the United States spend much more time playing video games than engaging in social media, according to a recent Common Sense Media report.

Last year, China acted: It prohibited minors from playing video games on school days and more than an hour on weekend and holiday nights. Teenagers then flocked to livestreaming platforms to watch others play their favorite games, so a new crackdown bars children from watching livestreams after 10 p.m. The goal is to reduce addiction to gaming or, as the Chinese government calls it, spiritual opium, because of concerns about how it harms mental health and academic study.

Such bans may sound outrageous even for an authoritarian country like China. But as a gaming entrepreneur in the United States for 13 years and a father of two young daughters, I dont think parents are doing enough to protect kids from the potential harms of video games.

William Siu helped found the mobile gaming developer Storm8.
