Outpatient Programs For Drug Addiction

Intensive Outpatient Addiction Therapies

HealthTalks – Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment

Every individual struggling with addiction has unique needs whether that addiction is to alcohol or other drugs. Some individuals need a more structured and intensive recovery program and require a significant amount of support while they are obtaining treatment. For this reason, North Central Health Care offers a Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient program that provides that structure and increased support while integrating participants back into their daily life.

What Is Outpatient Vs Inpatient Treatment

Our inpatient drug addiction treatment, also called residential treatment, is a program where clients come to live at one of our locations in Santa Cruz County or South Lake Tahoe while they undergo treatment. This immersive program is ideal for people who need to get out of their current environment in order to make a fresh start.

With the outpatient treatment program, a client continues his or her daily work and personal routine, but then attends addiction treatment education and counselling in the evenings for eight weeks. Clients may continue to attend weekly support groups for as long as needed to reach their goals.

The outpatient program is appropriate for those whose addiction is a problem but hasnt completely taken over their lives yet. In other words, they are still able to maintain work and family obligations while pursuing treatment.

Whereas we have clients who come to inpatient treatment from around the country, the outpatient program is for local northern California residents who live and work near our outpatient facility in Aptos, CA or in South Lake Tahoe.

How Does An Intensive Outpatient Program Work For Substance Use Disorders

Group therapy is a crucial component of an intensive outpatient program for substance abuse. When engaging in group treatment, its specifically beneficial for those undergoing substance use disorders because group participation serves as an encouragement to further develop their communication skills. During therapy, individuals also are granted a chance to practice their socializing. Socializing is an area they could have lacked while they were in the middle of their substance addictions.

Support groups can provide individuals with a safe place where they feel supported especially when they need it the most. Group counseling is extremely important because it is a time when various members of the group can feel free to confront each other if they feel the need to. Due to peers being in a similar boat as the entire group, there is authority to do this.

The support groups offer the group members a strong foundation and sense of structure that they most likely missed out on while they were abusing substances. Once this structure is returned into their lives, so is needed discipline. Normally, some individuals will be further along than others on their sobriety journey, but there is beauty in this because the newer members can grow and learn from the older members experiences.

During group therapy, the counselors teach their participants the skills they need to do the following:

  • Cope with their cravings and coping skills
  • Recognize their triggers
  • Remain on the road to sobriety

The Legal Prescription Program

In 1965, the legal prescription of drugs began in Stockholm, after a campaign strongly supported by Expressen, the biggest newspaper in Sweden in the 1960s. Some doctors received the right to prescribe drugs, such as amphetamine and morphine, to addicts. The idea was that doctors would have the right to prescribe the drug to chronic addicts in order to reduce their propensity to commit crimes. An inspiration for this movement was a book, The Addict and the Law, written by American sociologist Alfred R. Lindesmith. The Legal Prescription Program was controversial from the start the users were allowed to determine the dosage and were given a few days ration with an option to refill when needed. More than 4 million normal doses were prescribed. The program grew from 10 to 120 patients, but after just one year, doctor Sven-Erik Ã…hström was the only physician to remain. He believed the patients should control their dosage and he allowed patients to take their prescriptions home asking for more whenever they ran out earlier than expected. After a two year period, a total of four million dosages of amphetamine and 600,000 dosages of opiates had been prescribed to 120 patients”. A number of the clients were former prison inmates. Eventually, police seizures showed that the drugs had become available to persons not involved in the project. Such disastrous results opened the door for Nils Bejerots theories on drug use to gain popularity.

The Differences Between Inpatient And Outpatient Treatment

Treating Substance Abuse

While both inpatient and outpatient rehab programs offer a wide variety of therapies to help patients overcome substance use disorders, there are two main factors that differentiate the two types of programs, such as:

  • Where patients reside. When a person attends inpatient rehab, they reside and stay overnight at the rehab facility for the duration of their treatment. Patients attending an outpatient treatment program, on the other hand, typically live at home and travel to the rehab facility to attend scheduled treatment sessions.1,5 Some outpatient facilities offer or can link patients to supportive housing services, should an alternative living environment be necessary.
  • The level of medical and clinical management and monitoring. Inpatient programs have the ability to provide 24-hour clinical care and support in addition to community- or group-based recovery services.4,5 These facilities are equipped with the staff and tools needed to care for people with severe substance use disorders or who require medically managed withdrawal or have serious co-occurring medical or mental health conditions.1,5

Types Of Therapy At Outpatient Programs

Before beginning treatment at an outpatient rehab center, ask the facility about the classes and therapies offered and make sure you feel comfortable with them. Outpatient treatment can include behavioral therapy, medications or a combination of the two.3 Behavioral therapy can be an effective and common treatment method in outpatient rehab, since it empowers you to take control of your addiction.4 A few key behavioral therapy practices include:

The Difference Between Outpatient And Inpatient Rehab

Outpatient rehab programs are quite distinct from inpatient rehab programs.

When a patient is admitted to a residential inpatient treatment program, they start a medical detoxing process and are under 24-hour supervision by licensed professionals. Their days are filled with groups, activities, educational sessions, and individual therapy. During the week, inpatient clients meet with physicians, psychiatrists, and nutritionists. Inpatient treatment is the most intensive type of rehabilitation.

Holistic practices and therapies can also be delivered by outpatient specialists, such as seeing a nutritionist, meditation instructor, or acupuncturist.

The number and types of therapies in outpatient treatment are truly up to the clients themselves, although once or twice per week is always recommended, at the minimum.

Difference Between Inpatient And Outpatient Rehab

The biggest difference between inpatient and outpatient type of drug rehab is in the concept of each type of treatment. Inpatient rehab lasts between 28 and 90 days, all of which require a person to remain in a rehab center. A severe addiction to drugs and alcohol usually requires inpatient rehab because it provides more therapeutic and technical support. Inpatient treatment provides a stable environment wherein a person can focus on recovery and avoid outside influences that would jeopardize their recovery.

Outpatient rehab allows a person to live at their home, and their life continues as usual, outside the treatment. Mild addiction problem is often treated with outpatient rehab. Additionally, outpatient rehab also helps people with severe addiction who have completed inpatient treatment and need more support on the road to recovery. Both types of treatments, despite different concepts, have unique advantages and outstanding potential to help men and women with drug or alcohol addiction.

Benefits Of Outpatient Rehab

For mild to moderate addictions, outpatient rehab is usually an ideal treatment choice. These programs are more accessible and flexible than an inpatient program.

Some of the biggest reasons to consider outpatient rehab include:

  • Affordability. Because youre able to live at home during outpatient treatment, you dont have to pay the costs of lodging at an inpatient facility making it more affordable than inpatient.
  • Flexibility. Outpatient programs can usually work around your schedule. This is beneficial for those who feel like they cant leave their job or family for an extended period of time.
  • Access to family. Throughout the outpatient rehab program, family involvement and support is emphasized, as loved ones can help encourage you to stay on the path to sobriety.

What Is An Intensive Outpatient Program

An intensive outpatient program is for individuals who were diagnosed with substance use disorders that are not as critical for inpatient addiction treatment but are still in need of intensive levels of care. An IOP is also a great option for individuals dealing with both a mental illness health disorder and a substance use disorder. Intensive outpatient programs in NJ do not require your loved one to move into a treatment facility, provide medically supervised detox, or 24-hour care, such as a residential program.

This option is designed for an individual in need of ongoing substance abuse treatment after they depart from a residential treatment center. The beauty of outpatient treatment programs is that the main focus is assisting individuals in avoiding relapse, and providing participants with a support group that supports ongoing recovery therapies. When clients are attending outpatient addiction programs, the difference is that they arent living at the treatment facility for 24 hours a day. Since they have more independence, these participants can attend to work or school schedules, family life, personal life, and individual needs during the day and return at night.

What Services Do Outpatient Drug Addiction Treatment Programs Offer

Outpatient treatment for drug and alcohol addiction can incorporate several types of support services to help individuals with substance abuse problems. These can include:3

Outpatient therapy for drug and alcohol addiction is a great way to address issues contributing to the substance abuse problem, and behavioral counseling will likely be part of your outpatient treatment plan. A few common forms of behavioral counseling are:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy, where individuals learn to recognize and steer clear of situations that may lead them to drug or alcohol abuse.
  • Contingency management, where individuals learn to abstain from drugs or alcohol through incentives and rewards.
  • Motivational interviewing, where individuals are assessed on their willingness to make positive change and begin treatment.

When Is Outpatient Rehab A Good Option

If you have severe addiction and a co-occurring mental health disorder, you may be better served by an inpatient or residential treatment program.

However, outpatient rehab is a good option if you:

  • have mild to moderate addiction based on ASAM criteria
  • have recently finished inpatient treatment and need a step-down level of care
  • have strong, reliable support at home
  • cannot take time off from your job for residential treatment
  • cannot afford to attend inpatient treatment

Keep in mind, all outpatient programs are different. Some programs may provide psychiatric services to address mental health issues, while others will be geared towards a primary substance use disorder.

An outpatient drug rehab facility allows people to seek assistance at the centre during the day and go back to the comfort of their home at the end of the day. For many persons, outpatient treatment is preferable to inpatient care because they can continue to work and keep up with regular responsibilities while receiving the treatment they require.

The programmes are also more cost-effective because the clients do not need to pay for 24/7 care. Here is what you can expect in an outpatient addiction rehab programme.
