How And Why Support Groups Work
When you participate in a support group, you may find that its the first time you feel a sense of connecting with other people who truly understand what you have been going through. In a supportive and nonjudgmental environment, you are free to share your own experiences while learning what has worked for other people in similar circumstances.
Participating in support groups can reduce any sense of isolation you have been experiencing, and it allows you to witness the progress and growth in the people around you. Other members of your support group may offer encouragement as you progress, and they might also point out things you are doing that may be setting you up for a relapse.
Different people respond to different types of support groups. Groups may be based on a self-help philosophy or peer support. If you find that one type of support group doesnt work for you, keep looking until you find one that does.
Having A Loved One Living With Addiction Can Be Difficult Fortunately Many Support Groups Are Available For The Friends And Family Members Of People With Substance Use Disorders
One of the most important factors in drug or alcohol treatment is the strength of the support system around the person in need of help. If youre a family member of someone undergoing treatment for drug or alcohol addiction, you can have an enormous impact on their recovery by showing them that you are available and supportive.
However, because a loved ones addiction can be emotionally taxing, family members dont always have the resources or energy to provide this crucial support. In these cases, several organizations can help families in need, including Al-Anon, Alateen, Nar-Anon, Parents of Addicted Loved Ones, Families Anonymous, SMART Recovery Family & Friends and NAMI Family Support Groups.

Mutual Support Groups And Self
Mutual support groups and self-help programs can be implemented online or in a community setting. These interventions include structured programs that have behavioral, spiritual, and cognitive components, such as 12-step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous .
Community-based self-help groups have been associated with higher rates of abstinence from alcohol and other substances, particularly for weekly or more frequent programs. In 2020, a Cochrane Systematic Review found that peerled AA and professionallydelivered TwelveStep Facilitation were more effective than other established treatments at increasing abstinence from alcohol.

How Do They Work
Support groups allow peers to hold each other up during the recovery process. This can start as early as detox, as long as you are stable. In some cases, you may not attend a support group until after rehabilitation is complete, and you are creating a daily routine that does not involve drugs or alcohol.
While there are not many medical studies on the efficacy of peer support groups, those that exist show that people who participate in mutual support during and after rehabilitation report higher satisfaction with the overall course of their treatment. Support group participants who struggled with homelessness or other challenging or stressful living situations reported lower rates of relapse.
Peer support also helped to engage groups who were historically difficult to engage, like people struggling with significant mental illness and co-occurring substance abuse. When members of these high-risk groups participated in peer support groups after rehabilitation, they were more likely to adhere to a post-discharge plan for abstinence, doctors appointments, and other components of ongoing treatment.

What Are Peer Support Groups
Peer support groups are simply meetings of people who struggle with similar addictions. These groups may be composed of individuals of all ages and genders, or they may be listed for a more narrow demographic. You and your peers will get to know one another by sharing stories, listening to one another, and honoring the difficulties that each of you has faced as you work to overcome your addictions.
Support Groups Create Sober Friendships
Drug and alcohol support groups encourage members to make connections outside of meetings as well. Groups that follow AAs 12 step model will encourage members who have been attending meetings for a while and making some progress to find a sponsor. A sponsor is another group member who you feel comfortable enough with to speak to openly, one on one. You can call your sponsor anytime to talk about anything. Not only can they be an incredible help to your sobriety, you can help theirs by allowing them to share and reinforce what theyve learned.

What Are The Benefits Of Addiction Support Groups
Many studies have been conducted about the effectiveness of support groups for those in addiction recovery. Sustained attendance at self-help groups is associated with a higher likelihood of abstinence and better substance use outcomes. For this reason, many experts in the field recommend that individuals leaving inpatient or outpatient treatment programs dedicate themselves to attending 90 meetings in 90 days.
Most of the studies that examined the benefits of addiction support groups found individuals who continued to attend these groups in recovery often seemed to accrue more benefits than those who stopped attending. In addition, a change in attendance could often be a clue of an impending crisis or relapse that would derail an individuals recovery progress.
Generally, addiction support groups are effective for people in recovery. However, not everyone will readily respond to the support group environment. While some people feel like theyve come home from their very first meeting, many others may need time to adjust to the support group experience. There are also some guidelines that can help increase the benefits of attending peer support meetings, and improve your experience.

Types Of Addiction Recovery Support Groups
Self-help support groups are created by volunteers who have gone through similar scenarios. This type of support group is often referred to as a peer support group and is always managed and operated by its members.
Professionally operated support groups are created by licensed professionals such as social workers or psychologists. The creator or leader of the support group will control the discussions and any other activities. These groups are typically held in addiction treatment centers and may require a membership fee.
Open support groups are generally open to the public and allow anyone to participate. The typical AA meeting would fall under an open support group.
Closed support groups are based on criteria that have to be met before a person can take part. Often, these groups will put a limit on how many people can join.
